WhenWorlds Collide How Charlie Moorcroft is Bringing Conservation Awareness to Equestrians Around The Country By Georgie Hammond Phelps Media Group

Page 8

When Charlie Moorcroft got his start in the equestrian industry he never imagined that his passion for teaching would expand well beyond the confines of the arena and include animals far from the equine species However Moorcroft has found himself doing just that balancing and blending his full time business as a trainer with a new non profit organization Moorcroft Conservation Foundation MCF Moorcroft s journey in equestrian sport began as a kid in a local stable After quite a few jobs and different states he landed at his family s 100 acre Hanover Connecticut farm where he started his own pony breeding program in the mid 1990s Moorcroft then became one of the first equine instructors in the nation to receive certification through the United States Hunter Jumper Association USHJA Trainer

Page 9

Certification Program and since then has dedicated his career to shaping the futures of riders of all ages His unique and all encompassing teaching style has established him as the go to trainer for children of the sport s top professionals including McLain Ward s 6 year old daughter Lilly I have been teaching trainer s kids for a very long time and really love it I love the pressure and being a part of their journey I love that these professionals are trusting myself and my team to do right by their children and that they re way better than me in this sport but I still get to be part of the adventure explained Moorcoft In some ways I think I m a teacher rather than a show trainer in a lot of ways I love winning and the sport has been amazingly generous to me but at the end of the day I think I m a real teacher I love starting kids off really young and teaching them the basics as well as manners respect and how the system really works not just how to win ribbons Charlie Moorcroft teaching in Wellington Florida Photo by Georgie Hammond Phelps Media Group

Page 10

Fostering his love for sharing and educating Moorcroft became involved with numerous boards and committees including the United States Equestrian Federation USEF National Hunter Committee the USHJA Pony Hunter Task Force and the USHJA Foundation Board of Directors His work with the USHJA Foundation would later inspire him to create Moorcroft Conservation Foundation an extension of his own collection of exotic critically endangered and protected species A wide array of animals have found sanctuary in the comforts of his Wellington Florida home since 2006 and now serve as educational ambassadors for anyone that pays Moorcroft s residence a visit My work with the USHJA Foundation inspired me to start the Moorcroft Conservation Foundation I love when kids visit and seeing the smiles on their faces and the questions they ask remarked Moorcroft I love working out of the riding facility we re lucky enough to work from in Wellington that has a huge man made lake and a track around it which just leads to a lot of natural conversation I like to take the kids out of the rings as often as we can to explore talk nature talk riding and try to see if there is some overlap there Moorcroft Conservation Foundation was established in November 2020 with a mission of introducing children and adults to global conservation issues inspiring them to make a difference and raise funds to support collaborative organizations Moorcroft s collection of 16 different species of turtles tortoises skunks birds maras cats and rabbits provide an intimate and hands on experience at his home while he shares his knowledge of conservation with many of the children he teaches to ride We started the foundation just as a way to bring awareness and real life experiences to people within and beyond our niche community Moorcroft shared Our goal is really to bridge the gap between kids and education and also bring funds to other organizations that we trust so that they can also provide opportunities for kids to be involved on a local national and global level I like teaching so this was a natural fit to working with so many children Charlie Moorcroft and a skunk Photo by Georgie Hammond Phelps Media Group

Page 15

Looking forward Moorcroft is eager to continue sharing the initiatives of the Moorcroft Conservation Foundation raising money for like minded organizations and educating the sport s rising stars both in and out of the arena There is no doubt that he will only continue to spread what many friends refer to as Charlie s Magic with the next generation hiding some of life s biggest lessons in each and every experience Moorcroft Conservation Foundation was truly the Right thing at the right time for me and I am excited to see what the future holds and what we can do for organizations around the world concluded Moorcroft I have always been a teacher but to be able to share education about conservation with the equestrian industry is something I feel very lucky to be able to do

of Horsemanship to Reflect How Women Do It E questrian sport is full of traditions and age old theories Most riders are quick to share a comment or training tip that has been passed on from known equestrian idols but often as we ritualistically parrot what we have heard for so long we fail to consider where those quips and quotes came from Honestly the majority of the ideologies in modern day equestrian sport were created by men and while not all incorrect not all apply specifically to the training of female equestrians It was this realization which brought about the birth of C 6 Equestrian

Page 44

Jenny Susser Ph D sport and performance psychologist sat down with international dressage rider Mette Larsen and international eventer Sinead HalpinMaynard one sunny Florida afternoon and together the three women penned out the vision of C 6 To create a new model for women and horses grounded in how women do it In a collaborative effort C 6 Equestrian challenges old perspectives and invites women to explore a greater connection to their energy skill sets and confidence to enhance their personal journeys with themselves and their horses While still in its youth C 6 Equestrian is already making a massive impact in the equestrian world through their social media presence online bi monthly virtual calls and hands on symposiums where they connect with and educate women on adapting equestrian sport to best suit their individual needs Together this community focuses on the six pillars of their namesake Confidence Connection Communication Commitment Community and Culture and how women can improve upon each of these areas not just as riders but as individuals in their everyday lives In striving to create a judgment free safe space for women to openly express their fears concerns and worries as well as triumphs and experiences the women behind C 6 Equestrian share their unique expertise as well as their own personal struggles both in and out of the saddle Forming C 6 Equestrian is one of those things where all the stars aligned Originally I d been working in the equestrian world as a sport psychologist helping mainly adult amateurs who had confidence issues Dr Susser explained The thing we often don t get especially as women is to explore what the relationship to ourselves means And whatever sort of fishbowl you ve been raised in shapes what you believe you re supposed to think about yourself You know that you should be confident quiet calm reserved whatever it is And when internal doesn t match external you get problems So what we do at C 6 Equestrian is work with people to help them bring out some of that our swirling private voice that is just so bad to ourselves and understand how to manage it to understand that there is another way 44 TCE TheCompetitiveEquestrian com

The C 6 model takes a deep dive into some of a rider s biggest fears anxieties and stressors Instead of providing a one size fits all solution to a problem the instructors help each woman uncover their own individualized toolkit Sharing this invaluable knowledge helps women not only deal with issues they may face in the moment but also provides a foundation they are able to build upon as they grow more confident as riders and as women Whether you are participating in one of their in person symposiums or you are tuning in for one of their virtual sessions held twice a month each participant is tasked with self reflection exercises and homework to drive the message home The success of each individual is a direct result of their own ability to let down barriers and be involved in the community atmosphere and conversation being held during each session Their new school approach to the traditional clinic model intentionally puts the same amount of emphasis on both the riders and auditors in order to bring forth an engaging and intimate dialogue helping to foster the community aspect of their mission Comprising an extended weekend of instruction and discussion participants enjoy sessions both in and out of the saddle working on all of the six C s Unlike regular clinics the C 6 symposiums expose the negative psychological behaviors females engage in as a society and through discussions with Dr Jenny Susser demonstration rides with Larsen and Halpin Maynard the group members are able to see first hand how to transform their mentality while learning new techniques in the saddle to improve their own riding Over the course of two days women are asked to confront these issues introspectively and come together as a community to get to the root of them innately crafting a unique transformative experience Stephanie Fisher and C 6 Team reflecting on her transformation over the course of the weekend Photo by Olivia Airhart Phelps Media Group With virtual learning and connection steadily on the rise the C 6 team has adapted their model to allow for online connections with their audience Twice a month the three instructors facilitate online open forums built around weekly themes Keeping with their model of open flowing communication the C 6 team begins the zoom with an introductory topic or prompt and the remainder of the call is an informal and open discussion between participants from around the

Page 48

country and the team themselves It is not uncommon to hear stories of triumphs and tribulations on these calls but no matter what each individual is compelled to share the C 6 community is there to offer guidance and support to help each rider navigate through whatever they might be focusing on that week The great success of these calls has not only helped further build out the C 6 community but has also led to a bigger project on the horizon an allfemale masterclass of sorts which will aid women in their progression as horsewomen The C 6 mission is for recreational and competitive female riders alike and provides a much needed platform for horsewomen of all skill levels to challenge themselves to be not only more informed and confident riders but also stronger individuals in everyday life For more information on C 6 Equestrian the empowering women who are leading a change in the modern day equestrian model and the supportive community standing behind them please visit www c 6equestrian com or follow them on Facebook and Instagram

WHERE THERE IS A WILL THERE IS A WAY TO WINNING THE 40 000 1 50M GOLD TOUR WELCOME SPEED STAKE Sixteen competitors navigated the 40 000 1 50m Gold Tour Welcome Speed Stake sponsored by The Competitive Equestrian Consisting of fourteen total jumping efforts and designed by top FEI course designer Leopoldo Palacios the track was set on the impressive Derby Field at the 1 50m height The top three podium winners all jumped clean Speeding to a decisive victory was Will Simpson aboard his own Chacco P in 67 149 seconds With a time of 70 597 seconds Chandler Meadows with Christy JNR placed second and rounding out the top three was Luis Sabino and Argan de Beliard who finished on a time of 72 033 seconds My horse was on fire today exclaimed Simpson First time on the grass but it was fantastic footing My horse left out a stride in the first line but still made the inside turn really felt good right off the bat About the course Simpson went on to say It was fantastic We had a lot of turns we had the wall the grass footing was perfect and just a lot of questions that Leopoldo asked out there It really felt good to have a horse with confidence Simpson and Chacco P a twelve year old Mecklenburg gelding are longtime partners in the show arena The duo competes on both the national and international level with a recent third place finish in the 250 000 FEI 1 55m CSI4 at the Desert International Horse Park In a pre event interview Palacious explained that this specific track was designed to improve the horses for the future jump off class and that this is not a normal speed class at a lower height that they are able to go super fast I think it is very important to have these types of classes since speed is not the only factor Palcios also expounded on the grass footing mentioning its importance in developing a horse and showcasing the best of the sport Grass is better at the really big shows like Aachen and Calgary that are the grand slam of this sport they are on grass Today more natural is more important and this Derby field is fantastic in my opinion It is one of the best fields that I have built on Olympian Will Simpson and is own Chacco P sped to victory during the Gold Tour at Blenheim EquiSports

TOP TWO FOR NICK HANESS IN THE 15 000 USHJA NATIONAL HUNTER PROFESSIONAL DERBY Nick Haness Temecula CA claimed the top two spots on West Coast Equine Partners LLC s Notorious and Morrison respectively Haness outshined the competition earning top scores of 90 96 on Notorious and 87 75 and 94 with Morrison Handy Haness as he is known on the West Coast chose to jump both mounts over all the high options With two flawless second rounds it was Notorious remarkable jumping form that wowed the judges for the win I think the most exciting part of the derbies here at Blenheim is that we have so many nice horses and good riders both in the professional and non professional divisions that we can look at the nuances and the little things that separate them commented judge Tony Sgarlata For Haness having such a wonderful owner to ride for has been a blessing It has been a tremendous few weeks for West Coast Equine Partners and Gail Ellis who received the Arthur Hawkins Award of Excellence Award earlier in the series We were admiring her years of owning great horses and today was just another prime example of her owning such a nice field Her horses were first second and third in this big class The horse that won the class is the newest horse we have added to the string so this was very exciting This was very exciting to have this success very early on It was my first derby on this horse I couldn t be happier with the outcome He jumped beautifully and I know Ms Ellis is very proud to own him finally Third place honors were given to Karli Postel and Cortese for their competitive scores of 87 and 92 With scores well into the 90s Nick Haness piloted Notorious to victory during the 15 000 USHJA National Hunter Derby
