I n today s society where many feel like there are not enough hours in the day giving up one s rare free time for charitable efforts may seem like an unfeasible desire However for equine veterinarian Dr Rob Franklin DVM DACVIM his inspiring philosophy of volunteerism and discovering passions allows him to live a fulfilled life As a husband father and working professional his life could be considered packed full of commitments but he finds time to serve as the Vice President of the American Association of Equine Practitioners AAEP is a founder and entrepreneur of a supplement company and leads veterinary medical trips to underdeveloped countries in order to provide care to working equines with the Equitarian Initiative As a teen Dr Franklin s path towards vet school began after a whirlwind summer completing a horsemanship program at a ranch in Cody Wyoming From long hours learning how to float teeth and shoe horses to starting two year olds under saddle and packing animals into the backcountry the summer of diverse education sparked a fire of inspiration It was during that time we had an equine veterinarian come out for a couple of calls to castrate colts and stitch lacerations Dr Franklin explained This is when I was first really exposed to the profession and I would love to find who that veterinarian is to tell them that they set my path It was at that point that I started pursuing my dream of becoming an equine veterinarian He set out on the long road to owning his own practice which involved undergraduate studies at Colorado State University veterinary school at Texas A M an internship in Southern California and a three year residency at the University of Florida to become an American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine board certified specialist Equine veterinarians have a very long learning curve and some of that is developing the skills and experience but it s also gaining the trust from horse owners Horse owners are very different from companion animals in terms of being very selective about their equine veterinarian Dr Franklin said We go through a period where we ve got to earn those stripes and that comes from mentorship and training Following his schooling Dr Franklin wished to immerse himself in different cultures and moved to rural Victoria Australia for a few years to develop an intensive care unit at an equine hospital His time Down Under expanded his outlook on the world which expanded into his growing interest for Central and South America and took form in the creation of a supplement company called FullBucket FullBucket Co Founder Dr Rob Franklin Photo by Danielle Schiller

In the mid 2000s Keith Latson my vet school roommate fraternity brother and colleague and I had an interest in starting a business Dr Franklin said I read a book called Start Something That Matters by Blake Mycoskie the founder of Toms Shoes and it was very formative to me in terms of having an entrepreneurial idea and then looking for a way to make the world a better place FullBucket s story began when we developed a supplement line of quality products for veterinarians to manage digestive issues in horses dogs and cats Dr Franklin explained After some initial success we realized having just another animal healthcare company was not going to fulfill our life s ambitions We shared the same innate feeling try your best each day to leave people animals and the world better than when you found them We strive to have meaning and purpose in our life that isn t self serving and that is how FullBucket came to fruition The company not only stands out for offering the highestconcentration probiotic based animal health supplements on the market but for their Giving and Care Care Programs For every FullBucket product that is purchased another is donated to treat horses and donkeys in developing countries through the company s giving program Inspired by their mantra Be Good and Do Good the company distributes custom nutritional products to impoverished villages as well as provides year round support and education Each year Dr Franklin leads an all volunteer team of industryleading veterinary science and animal surgery experts and partners with local veterinarians and animal welfare advocates in Mexico and Central America to perform free veterinary exams and surgeries on the working equines povertystricken families depend on 8 FullBucket Co founder Dr Rob Franklin DVM DACVIM with vet tech Angel Walle Photo by Danielle Schiller TCE TheCompetitiveEquestrian com

With a successful business playing its role in supporting the 80 100 million working equids around the world and his responsibilities as a partner in Fredericksburg Equine Veterinary Services in Fredericksburg Texas Dr Franklin lives a fulfilled life due to his philosophies on community and giving back There is an old African tribal saying If you want to go fast go alone If you want to go far go together and I think that is key to finding balance purpose and a sense of community both in your personal and professional life I think people really start to get burned out when they lose hope for a balanced life whenever they re out slugging alone because you don t have a sense of community or collegiality Having others that you feel like are in the fight with you is important to your own mental health and outlook on life The importance of community inspired Dr Franklin to further expand his role in the American Association of Equine Practitioners leading to his appointment of Vice President earlier this year which will continue as he assumes the role of president in 2023 The organization is the largest group of equine medicine professionals in the world and he has hit the ground running helping implement digital education content in a world of virtual opportunities essential for communication in the midst of the COVID 19 pandemic As a professional organization AAEP deals with many complex issues we re still in the midst of dealing with a lot of bigger elephants in the room in terms of creating a good path forward for the younger vets There s a lot of younger vets that we re losing in the first five years of equine practice so we are working on identifying what those issues are in terms of what is forcing people out of equine practice and trying to develop career pathways that allow people to stay in We re definitely seeing an issue with not only retention of equine veterinarians but also recruitment Young professionals are getting burned out providing endless days worth of work topped off with the need to provide after hours emergency services while vet school continues to become more expensive with salaries for new veterinarians not increasing proportionally with the cost of education Mental health and well being are something that is discussed more now than ever and there s also an increased incidence of people having issues with anxiety depression and overall poor mental health We are trying to look for ways that we can support people to keep them resilient by finding purpose in their passions By juggling an overflowing plate of responsibilities Dr Franklin has firsthand experience on how finding purpose in one s life goes hand in hand with leading a balanced lifestyle No matter your desired career Dr Franklin s philosophy challenges one to consider the aspects they value most like contentment happiness and how to give back On a personal note being able to pour into my family and support those vital relationships are definitely a source of sustenance for me Dr Franklin continued I think the other aspect that always helps balance things out is having that attitude of gratitude and that spirit of generosity We should be thankful for all we have and try to look at others and put life in perspective then try to give back to others no matter what our circumstances are You know you ve always got something to give whether it s time money resources or words of encouragement When you fill someone else s bucket up you can t help but have your own bucket filled up a little bit too And I think that really helps me stay motivated FullBucket Co Founder Dr Rob Franklin in Guatemala Photo courtesy of FullBucket

EQUESTRIAN DUETS Grand Prix Dressage Competitor and Trainer Allison Kavey Talks Artistry and Communication By Emma Miller Phelps Media Group Allison Kavey and Cacharel Photo by Annan Hepner Phelps Media Group

Page 81

Grand Prix dressage competitor Allison Kavey knows better than most that translating the non verbal communication between horse and rider is a never ending practice As the co founder of Rivendell Dressage and trainer to riders of various backgrounds she is well accustomed to helping clients learn to better communicate and work towards harmony with their equine partners Mentored by some of the best dressage trainers of our time Kavey has spent years honing her ability to understand the horse before her whether she is in the saddle or on the ground teaching Listening Kavey says is a core skill of riding and training that everyone in the sport should value Over the last ten years Kavey has worked alongside Bettina Drummond one of her greatest teachers who has instilled in her an attention to detail and respect of the artistry of the sport that few have today With Drummond s help Kavey first went down centerline to compete in the Grand Prix with her mount QueBa HM and today she also works with James Koford Allison Brock and Lee Tubman to enhance her technical skills in the ring Kavey believes the emphasis on the finer points of dressage sport in her training from the start have helped her become so finely attuned to the needs of her horses and students

Page 82

Bettina is an artist and a technician of a level matched by very few riders in the world Kavey explained I have learned a great deal from her about the balance technique and speed required to ride at the highest level But I have also learned about meeting the horses where they are and bringing them into the form they take I try to bring what she s taught me of her understanding of horses into my training She says that both my strength and my weakness as a rider is that I m a negotiator and too easily swayed by the horses temperaments It s true that most of my horses have required a great deal of negotiation I ride very hot reactive animals but I definitely need to learn how to hold the line without antagonizing them I like talking to them and I like hearing them I am continuously learning the place where the negotiation needs to end where I can respectfully observe what a horse is saying and also be exact in what I ask of them We speak at least two languages equine and human and we write a new one with each horse bringing a shared vocabulary into each ride With the mentorship of such knowledgeable trainers and her experience teaching students both in and out of the saddle Kavey has made great strides in her competitive and professional career gaining valuable experience in the CDI arena and building a well respected training business Riding Citha s Utopia a 14 yearold KWPN mare owned by Andrea Woodner Kavey was the Region 8 Intermediate II reserve champion last year and also earned fourth place in the Grand Prix Freestyle at the regional championship The mare is competing in the CDI medium tour at the Adequan Global Dressage Festival this year and she soon plans to move her up to the CDI Grand Prix with the goal of qualifying for the US Dressage Festival of Champions at the Grand Prix level Her second top

Page 83

mount Cacharel a 14 year old Dutch Warmblood mare also owned by Woodner has successfully competed in the Intermediate II with an upward trajectory into the Grand Prix work Kavey is also excited by the talented string of young horses and client horses competing in the national ring in Wellington this winter Throughout her career as a professional Kavey has developed a skill set she utilizes to help riders of multiple disciplines and levels better understand their horses and reach their full potential She instructs dressage riders schooling Training Level to Grand Prix hunter jumper riders looking to better connect with their horses and improve their flatwork and eventing competitors striving to take their technical skills to the next level No matter the rider s goal Kavey is a firm believer in taking the time to understand what each student would like to accomplish and breaking down the steps to help her get there even if she must go back to the basics to do so Allison Kavey and Citha s Utopia Photo by Annan Hepner Phelps Media Group When a student comes to the barn and has big goals I really work to help them become reality Kavey said But I know how easy it is to want big things and skip important steps along the way I always say can we start to break this goal down into manageable steps That often means going back to the foundation of riding position and correct technique Sometimes students tell me they didn t realize what they didn t know about the basics and that is a moment I think is amazing as a teacher I can say Look how much you learned instead of being negative and telling them they were poorly trained before Progress is the point of this work the process of learning with your horse and becoming better at communicating with that other being is far more interesting than just learning a movement It is a lot of work and I m 100 there for students who want to do the work with me

Page 84

Allison Kavey and Citha s Utopia Photo by Annan Hepner Phelps Media Group I believe horse care is something that matters every day and makes a huge difference Horses know if they re being cared for and they become more confident being in a consistent program I want clients to know that if they send me a horse and want that horse prepared for sale to compete or they re trusting me with their own training I am doing the care myself Integrity honesty and great horse care matter to me more than anything else Kavey s desire to honor the traditional artistry of dressage and nurture healthy and happy horses in her program is central to her training and business practices With this passion at the forefront of her mind she founded Rivendell Dressage Inc with Andrea Woodner in 2007 and it has since grown into a prominent dressage training and sales entity in Millbrook New York and Loxahatchee Florida To best serve her clients and enhance her own competitive career Kavey spends the winter season in Wellington and the rest of the year in Millbrook Located only a few miles from the AGDF facilities in Wellington and White Fences in Loxahatchee Rivendell Dressage offers full and half training packages sales services clinics and lessons at their premium stables Allison Kavey
