N o one could have predicted the calamity that was 2020 The global pandemic that trickled down into all aspects of everyday life and the year was unprecedented to say the least As anyone who has spent even a little time around horses has come to learn nothing is predictable The same rule applied to what became of the 2020 show jumping circuit we were fully prepared to cancel said Capital Challenge show manager Oliver Kennedy But as we worked on a plan in conjunction with the health department CDC state organizations and host locations we were very confident that we could provide an event that was safe As the world began piecing together some sense of normalcy at the end of the summer the horse show industry peeked out from beneath an unexpected slumber While the early part of the year brought unavoidable cancellations the teams involved in managing longcherished fall indoor events like the Capital Challenge Horse Show and Washington International Horse Show WIHS presented by MARS Equestrian were determined to see the show go on The first priority as management teams began making plans for year end finals and championships was finding safe and secure open air venues to host their events If at any point we felt that it was going to be unsafe for anyone involved The Capital Challenge Horse Show was ultimately relocated from its longstanding home of 26 years at Prince George s Equestrian Center in Upper Marlboro MD to the expansive and state of the art World Equestrian Center WEC in Wilmington OH owned by The Roberts Family The Washington International Horse Show also made a move outdoors and took place at Tryon International Equestrian Center TIEC in Mill Spring NC after its original location Capital One Arena in Washington DC closed in March as a result of COVID 19 and has yet to reopen Everything changed and as a result WIHS has had to adapt and rethink tradition said WIHS President Vicki Lowell WIHS looked very different this year but it still offered the same level of prestige and achievement as it has throughout its 60 year history WIHS Equitation Finals Top Three Ellie Ferrigno Tessa Brown and Sophee Steckbeck by Jump Media TCE January February 2021 7

Page 8

While horses didn t make their daily commute to the show ring down F Street in the heart of the nation s capital city WIHS did crown 2020 champions with the same level of esteem After adaptations to the schedule reduced the number of horses and people on the grounds riders still found glory in the coveted WIHS Children s and Adult Hunter and Jumper Championships WIHS Junior and Pony Equitation Finals and the 62nd President s Cup Grand Prix presented by MARS Equestrian There was even a tiny silver lining that was close to competitors hearts several dozen Georgetown Cupcakes made the 500 mile trip to take up their rightful place in the WIHS winner s circle The Capital Challenge Horse Show was able to keep their schedule wholly intact thanks to exhaustive planning The 2020 edition of Capital Challenge featured the World Championship Hunter Rider WCHR Finals the 25 000 3 and 3 3 Green Hunter North American Championships as well as the addition of The North American League NAL Finals among all of the regular hunter jumper and equitation divisions We took a hard look at the flow of events reviewed aerial photos of previous shows and rearranged where we needed to in order to avoid crowds and congestions said Kennedy We were able to accomplish what we set out to do and keep everyone on site safe and healthy Going Virtual The management teams of WIHS and the Capital Challenge Horse Show teams pride themselves in delivering to the best of the best in horse sport to all equestrian fans Whether bringing horses to the streets of D C or through live feed production from Capital Challenge they provide the excitement and thrills of equestrian sport for several weeks each fall Given spectator limitation protocols from the United Sates Equestrian Federation USEF the events had to reevaluate how they were to showcase sport in 2020 Thanks to support from USEF Network WEC TIEC and unwavering sponsor encouragement show jumping went virtual So much of our existing spectator base is online it was not difficult for us to limit access while adding content to what we offer digitally and we are grateful for the Roberts family s willingness to step up to the plate as host and with live streaming capabilities said Kennedy of WEC s owners and presenting sponsor of the Capital Challenge Horse Show since 2016 We were still able to still have the Capital Challenge Horse Show that everyone knows and loves in a format and venue that provided the best experience possible Michael Britt Leon and Private I by Shawn McMillen Photography

The Capital Challenge Horse Show and WIHS came alive for all fans despite their inability to attend Wall to wall live streaming was available from WEC and TIEC so that fans could still be a part of both events The horse show world like the rest of the world had to adapt but thanks to efforts by so many individuals organizations and governing bodies we prevailed and brought the fans of horse sport along with us said Lowell Winning Ways As the Capital Challenge Horse Show and WIHS made the most of a trying year competition went off in safe and spectacular fashion with winner s honors being given to both familiar faces and newcomers alike The 2020 space on the President s Cup which had world ranking points and 214 000 in prize money on offer the richest in WIHS history was filled by Todd Minikus after a storied win with Amex Z an 11 year old Zangersheide mare owned by Bit by Bit Group WIHS and so many horse shows depend on the support of an immense number of people especially in a year filled with so much uncertainty said Lowell After pledging support as the presenting sponsor of WIHS in 2019 MARS Equestrian stepped up to renew their support for 2020 and presented the President s Cup Grand Prix Such enthusiasm cooperation and commitment from MARS Equestrian the WIHS Board of Directors and all of our sponsors is appreciated beyond words It s a true testament to what made this year another success Minikus first won the President s Cup in 1990 aboard Thrilling a Thoroughbred gelding he owned with Michele M Masso and then took the title again in 2009 riding Alaska owned by Callie Seaman His third victory put him among a talented few who have their name listed on the prestigious trophy more than twice including Rodney Jenkins Beezie Madden and McLain Ward WIHS has been so important to my career the first time I won there it put me on the map said Minikus This year has been obviously a little bit of a different situation with everything going on in the world as well as show jumping We were shut down for quite a while and Tryon was one of the first facilities to open up and the team there did a fabulous job of taking on the WIHS President s Cup Sometimes you kind of feel like Here we go another class but when they mention the President s Cup because it has such a history and is such a prestigious event in American show jumping it is just as meaningful to me as it was 30 years ago Todd Minikus and Amex Z by Shawn McMillen Photography TCE January February 2021 11

Page 12

While Minikus found victory at WIHS a fresh face stole the show in the WCHR Professional Finals at the Capital Challenge Horse Show which adopted a new format in light of COVID 19 where all riders competed in consecutive first and second rounds on their own horses The change in the WCHR Pro Finals format was done in an effort to reduce the crowding that we have had in previous years said Kennedy We minimized exposure between the different riders who may have switched horses tack grooms and equipment in the past Michael Britt Leon competed in the WCHR Pro Finals for the first time in 2020 and beat out the likes of Evan Coluccio Greg Crolick Kelley Farmer Courtney Lenkart and Geoffrey Hesslink for victory It is a dream come true to win the WCHR Professional Finals Britt Leon said who led the WCHR national professional standings coming into the finals I have watched this class for a while Being there in 2020 when it s been so crazy just being at a horse show of that caliber was incredible It s been a memorable and wonderful experience and winning put it over the top This year virtually every aspect of the world has changed in ways no one could have ever foreseen The Capital Challenge Horse Show and Washington International Horse Show adapted and rethought tradition to find the safest possible path forward in support of loyal competitors and fans as well as those who make a living in the sport of show jumping Thanks to the extraordinary collaboration among many people dedicated to the sport both events were able to offer safe and prestigious competitions that proved to be bright spots on a 2020 show calendar marked with so much disturbance and change

Page 39

Carly Anthony Probably my most famous Grand Prix photo is this shot of Carly Anthony from Winter Equestrian Festival I was on assignment for a magazine at the time and just happened to be the only photographer on this jump She cleared it with ease and ended up 2nd in this 200 000 Grand Prix Andrew

Page 40

Aluminum Overcast This is probably my favorite portrait as it combines two of my great loves horses and airplanes Louisa Brackett named all her horses after WWII B 17 bombers so when his namesake Aluminum Overcast came to town for an airshow it was the perfect opportunity to put this portrait together Andrew

Page 43

Page 44

Mya Pinski Working with the sun can be challenging at times but if you know how to let the light fall it can really make an otherwise standard portrait pop Andrew

Page 45

Thermal Moon On assignment for a magazine out in Thermal years ago I captured this shot in the hunter ring late in the day Most of the rest of the show was complete by this point and even all the photographers had gone home for the day I stuck around as I saw the moon rise and figured it would make for a cool shot Andrew

Page 46

Page 47

Andrew and Team Most of ARP s success is due to all the talented people that work for us They are really dedicated to our business and strive to put out the best work on a daily basis I can never say enough about how much my team means to me and I know that we wouldn t be where we are now without their hard work Andrew

Page 48

Athena Grand Prix Athena was probably one of my favorite horses to photograph She was such a tough competitor and always finished in the ribbons She s now living out her life in retirement at Pony Lane Farm in Utah Andrew

Page 49

Page 50

Ryan O Donnell Being able to capture the individuality of each client and their horses is really important Ryan wanted to make sure he got photos with the Pride flag so I had my assistant hold it into the wind for this silhouette Andrew

Page 51

Great Lakes Equestrian Festival Hunter Ring Occasionally when you have a break at your ring you d be amazed at what you can see in your surroundings In this shot I was down at the jumper ring covering for a photographer that needed a break I looked behind me and saw this beautiful cloud formation over the hunter rings I waited for the right moment and a horse came by for me Andrew

Page 52

Page 53

Hannah Reed Portrait season a short time between horse shows can be tricky for me and I have to work with difficult lighting conditions at times This just challenges me to create different looks and use those conditions to my advantage This shot doesn t quite work in color instead black and white really increases its power Andrew

Page 54

Charlotte Collins The late afternoon light at the Desert International Horse Park was really stunning during Charlotte s round Sometimes you just have to hang around late enough and Mother Nature takes care of things for you Andrew

Page 55

Page 56

Isabel deSousa The juxtaposition of the modern architecture and the wild forest of the bridle path irrigation canals in Wellington just creates a stunning portrait not to mention the beautiful horses Andrew

Page 57

Page 58

Page 59

Stacy Ryback and Trixie Stacy showing her jumper mare Carlotta W Trixie at Great Lales Equestrian Festival Andrew

Page 60

Trixie The love of my life my wife s jumper Trixie Carlotta W she s such a beautiful horse and she always loves to pose for me Andrew

Page 61

Schmooshy I can often be found crawling on the ground or climbing trees during portrait sessions to get different angles this little mini required a bit lower angle Andrew

Page 62

National Collegiate Equestrian Association Medal Flat Phase Ordinarily I wouldn t photograph a flat class but I decided to climb up on the roof of the building next to the ring and try a different perspective for this shot Alexis Bauman from my first horse show is pictured on the left Andrew

Page 63

Page 64

Page 65

Kent Farrington and Creedance One thing that I always try to do when shooting a Grand Prix is to get a nice low angle on at least one jump Sometimes I ll even put a camera under a jump to get a thrilling action shot Andrew

Page 66

Madison Mitchell I love working with great horses and these two are no exception They were absolutely perfect for our session in Traverse City Andrew

Page 67

Dinky Toy Stacy s newest jumper his head is so big that only half of it fits in the photo Andrew

Page 68

Page 69

Left Vermont Morning A catalog client requested a particular type of shot for an upcoming issue so while working at the Vermont Summer Festival I arrived at the show prior to sunrise and was able to capture some great shots as the sun came up Andrew Gwynne Paprocki I love portrait sessions because I get to really capture the personality of my clients I never do mini sessions because I like to take the time to let the relationship with the horses and clients develop I usually shoot until I know we ve gotten the shots and try not to stick to a time limit Andrew

Page 70

Golden Ocala The early bird gets the worm or at least the amazing sunrise shots Andrew Sienna Halama I always try to suggest solid colors and simple outfits for portrait sessions so that the natural beauty of the horse and owner are the focus and not the clothing Here you can see how Sienna s choice of shirt compliments her eyes as well as the chestnut color of Biscuit the horse Andrew

Page 71

Page 72

Horse Family Portrait The grooms at the barn we stable at are the best and the fact that these 4 greys were spotless for the portrait session is a testament to their hard work and dedication to all the clients at the barn Andrew

Page 73

Page 74

Margie Engle and Royce Great Lakes Equestrian Festival Whenever possible I try to incorporate elements of the show that make them unique to others in this case the Traverse City Ingate Arch makes for a stunning background in the Grand Prix ring Andrew

Page 75

Page 76

Drone Over Vermont Summer Festival Occasionally as time permits I get to dabble in other realms of photography One of my favorite locations to photograph was the Vermont Summer Festival I threw my drone up in the air one day and was able to capture this shot of the entire showgrounds you can see our trailer next to Jumper 2 Andrew

Page 77

Thermal Tesla Jump It s no secret that I m an aviation geek at heart so when I heard this fighter jet taking off I knew I had an opportunity for an awesome shot Andrew

Page 78

Page 79

Minnesota Harvest Horse Show Derby The Minnesota Harvest Horse Show is one of my favorite horse shows and one we ve been covering for many years The huge coliseum makes for some really dramatic shots and Pat Boyle and Showplace Productions do a fantastic job making the ring look amazing Andrew

Page 80

Delaney Hoffman Fall portraits in the Chicago area are so much fun I love being able to capture the changing colors of the foliage and when I can frame up a shot with the leaves it s even better Andrew

Page 81

McLain Ward and Rothchild I ve shot McLain so many times at so many locations but this one time at the Palm Beach Masters I actually got a shot with Rothchild s ears up Andrew

Page 82

Page 83

Stacy Ryback and Dinky Stacy and her new mount Dinky Toy van de Castershoeve Andrew Stacy Ryback and Utopia III It s no secret that I cannot photograph my wife when she competes I get too nervous and tend to screw up the shots as I m watching her rounds It s a small miracle that I got this shot of Stacy and her horse Bunny in the Grand Prix ring years ago Andrew

Page 84

Dunham Woods Horse Show Early mornings in late summer can make for some great conditions and this was no exception The fog made for a great moody shot of this rider on her way to the warm up ring Andrew

The New Forest Pony Courageous Kind Competitive By New Forest Pony Society of North America N ew Forest Ponies have a long and storied history going back in the written records as early as 1066 At this time William the Conqueror had claimed the New Forest in England as one of his royal hunting grounds and he established a rule that the commoners of that time were allowed to graze their ponies on that land Those grazing rights have continued for hundreds of years and at various times different bloodlines were introduced to the New Forest stock to enhance the ponies characteristics One might find remote traces of Thoroughbred Arab Welsh Hackney Fell Dales Highland Exmoor or Dartmoor In 1891 the Society for the improvement of New Forest Ponies was founded and in 1905 The Burley and District New Forest Pony Breeding and Cattle Society was founded Those two organizations merged in 1937 to form The New Forest Pony Breeding and Cattle Society which is still in charge of the New Forest Ponies today Since the 1930 s the studbook has been closed to all outside horse breeds and only purebred stallions are allowed to be turned out on the New Forest today New Forest Management And Grazing Rights Commoners of the New Forest are people who occupy land or property to which attaches one or more rights over the New Forest As such ponies grazing the Forest are owned by those historically named Commoners In releasing their ponies into the New Forest which is unique in terms of habitat they come under the protective jurisdiction of the Verderers of the New Forest Prior to release Commoners must apply to the Verderers Clerk who will confirm the existence of their right and allocate a brand for the animals Once branded they may be turned out into the Forest upon payment of a Marking Fee to the local Agister Agisters are employees of the Verderers Their work is to assist in the management of Commoners stock in the Forest Agisters are appointed and made responsible for supervising the day to day welfare of the ponies which graze the Forest each Agister is assigned to a particular district of the Forest The Verderers oversee the Agisters and make decisions to help improve the breed The mares and geldings are turned out and live in semi feral herds throughout the New Forest all year long while stallions are only turned out from May to August which helps ensure foals won t be born during winter or before the grass has grown enough to sustain the extra burden on the mares Valentina and Valiant Luck Photo Barbara Nelson TCE January February 2021 161

Once a year the various districts will hold a drift a rounding up of the New Forest Ponies this entails bringing them in to be looked over and welfare checked by the Agisters and owners The ponies will be vet checked and dewormed and when all is deemed acceptable their tails will be trimmed in a specific fashion to identify that they have been cleared to be turned back out into the New Forest Cheval de Bois St Beatrice Photo Stasia Stempksi Ponies With Global Appeal While these special ponies started in the New Forest England United Kingdom they have made their way around the world They can now be found in Canada United States and Australia as well as throughout Europe in countries such as France and the Netherlands Thanks to passionate people here in North America who fell in love with the breed some mares and a few stallions were imported over the years for breeding with the most recently imported stallion being Halestorm Branston Pickle residing at Pferde Traum Farm in Canada Other notable breeders with stallions are Manoravon Farm in Canada and Trevelyan Farm in the USA New Forest Pony Society of North America The New Forest Pony Society of North America NFPSNA was founded in 2003 and received Daughter Studbook status with the New Forest Pony Breeding Cattle Society NFPB CS of England in 2007 Since its founding the NFPSNA has worked tirelessly with a small group of enthusiastic volunteers to promote the New Forest Ponies The most up to date information can be found at www nfpsna com The NFPSNA holds a studbook of registered purebred and part bred ponies and ensures that each pony registered with the NFPSNA upholds the registration criteria set forth by England All ponies in the NFPSNA must be DNA tested before granted entrance to the NFPSNA studbook and in turn the NFPSNA maintains this DNA database to ensure the integrity of the breed here in North America Every pony registered in the NFPSNA can trace its ancestry through multiple generations of New Forest Ponies A Fun Adaptable Dependable Partner New Forest Ponies are known for their great personalities and kind natures Their coats are mainly shades of bay brown chestnut and gray Roan and palomino are allowed if they have brown eyes and white markings are only allowed on the face and lower legs These pint sized powerhouses can be as petite as 12 hands with a maximum allowable height of 148 cms or 14 2 1 8 hands at the withers An ideal New Forest Pony should be trainable with a great temperament and of working type with substance with sloping shoulders strong quarters plenty of flat bone good depth of body straight limbs and hard round feet New Forest Ponies have an endearing look and do make an ideal child s pony However they are not limited to this role and can achieve great success in many disciplines 164 TCE TheCompetitiveEquestrian com

In North America they are excelling in driving dressage hunters jumpers and eventing The extra special ones are more than capable of being multidisciplined driven by their very competitive nature and love of a learning challenge In North America New Forest Ponies are considered flexible enough to be competitive in endurance riding and can even be seen herding cattle on the family ranch It is not unheard of to find a New Forest Pony participating in 4 H hunter shows one weekend and taking a training level dressage test the next Wishbone Photo Annan Hepner Phelps Media New Forest Ponies are known for having a more horse like movement Although they are closer to the ground than a warmblood their length of stride makes them seem so much taller than they actually are to the rider They are intelligent sure footed athletic and agile and these traits make them excellent partners for smaller adult riders who are looking to remain competitive in the show venues while scaling down in size These clever ponies strive to please their riders and willingly try their hearts out in any discipline in which they are working They take their jobs seriously and have a very workmanlike attitude With so many positive attributes owning a New Forest Pony is very desirable While their numbers in North America are growing thanks to a few special breeding farms in Canada and the United States New Forest Ponies are still very hard to come by in North America Once a New Forest Pony finds a home they tend to stay for many years as a riding or driving partner to several family members 166 TCE TheCompetitiveEquestrian com
