order of a licensed veterinarian DESCRIPTION Clodronate disodium is a non amino chlorocontaining bisphosphonate Chemically clodronate disodium is dichloromethylene diphosphonic acid disodium salt and is manufactured from the tetrahydrate form INDICATION For the control of clinical signs associated with navicular syndrome in horses CONTRAINDICATIONS Horses with hypersensitivity to clodronate disodium should not receive OSPHOS WARNINGS Do not use in horses intended for human consumption HUMAN WARNINGS Not for human use Keep this and all drugs out of the reach of children Consult a physician in case of accidental human exposure PRECAUTIONS As a class bisphosphonates may be associated with gastrointestinal and renal toxicity Sensitivity to drug associated adverse reactions varies with the individual patient Renal and gastrointestinal adverse reactions may be associated with plasma concentrations of the drug Bisphosphonates are excreted by the kidney therefore conditions causing renal impairment may increase plasma bisphosphonate concentrations resulting in an increased risk for adverse reactions Concurrent administration of other potentially nephrotoxic drugs should be approached with caution and renal function should be monitored Use of bisphosphonates in patients with conditions or diseases affecting renal function is not recommended Administration of bisphosphonates has been associated with abdominal pain colic discomfort and agitation in horses Clinical signs usually occur shortly after drug administration and may be associated with alterations in intestinal motility In horses treated with OSPHOS these clinical signs usually began within 2 hours of treatment Horses should be monitored for at least 2 hours following administration of OSPHOS Easily Administered OSPHOS controls the clinical signs associated with Navicular Syndrome via intramuscular injection Well Tolerated in clinical trials Proven Efficacy at 6 months post treatment No immediately post treatment with effects lasting up to several hours Caution should be used when administering bisphosphonates to horses with conditions affecting mineral or electrolyte homeostasis e g hyperkalemic periodic paralysis hypocalcemia etc The safe use of OSPHOS has not been evaluated in horses less than 4 years of age The effect of bisphosphonates on the skeleton of growing horses has not been studied however bisphosphonates inhibit osteoclast activity which impacts bone turnover and may affect bone growth Bisphosphonates should not be used in pregnant or lactating mares or mares intended for breeding The safe use of OSPHOS has not been evaluated in breeding horses or pregnant or lactating mares Bisphosphonates are incorporated into the bone matrix from where they are gradually released over periods of months to years The extent of bisphosphonate incorporation into adult bone and hence the amount available for release back into the systemic circulation is directly related to the total dose and duration of bisphosphonate use Bisphosphonates have been shown to cause fetal developmental abnormalities in laboratory animals The uptake of bisphosphonates into fetal bone may be greater than into maternal bone creating a possible risk for skeletal or other abnormalities in the fetus Many drugs including bisphosphonates may be excreted in milk and may be absorbed by nursing animals Increased bone fragility has been observed in animals treated with bisphosphonates at high doses or for long periods of time Bisphosphonates inhibit bone resorption and decrease bone turnover which may lead to an inability to repair micro damage within the bone In humans atypical femur fractures have been reported in patients on long term bisphosphonate therapy however a causal relationship has not been established ADVERSE REACTIONS The most common adverse reactions reported in the field study were clinical signs of discomfort or nervousness colic and or pawing Other I t seems impossible for one person to juggle so much And yet when speaking with the 36 year old W lffer it s somehow easy to believe that with her positivity and self knowledge she s one to accomplish whatever she s targeted for her life For example when she answered the phone for this interview on some stretch of highway in the Hamptons her hometown she soon let on that she d recently completed a half marathon She s not a big runner but she set a goal raised money for Every Mother Counts and crossed the finish line in a personal best time Why did she do it Because she set herself the goal and made sure to see it through That is W lffer and it s this innate driving force behind her uncanny ability to accomplish whatever her imagination can conjure that makes her an inspiration An early education Born in New York City N Y W lffer moved out to the Hamptons at the age of 9 Her father and mother immigrated to America from Germany and the United Kingdom respectively and they ultimately decided to raise their children outside the big city atmosphere landing on a farm in Sagaponack N Y Christian W lffer W lffer s father was in the early stages Joey W lffer and Antonov at Hampton Classic Horse Show Photo The Book LLC of establishing the winery and stables on the property which would grow form 14 acres to 176 on the east end of Long Island I started riding when I was 6 when my parents built the farm said W lffer Dad started riding at the same time We had school ponies It was very much a backyard barn My dad learned so late in life but he was so fearless W lffer remembered fondly And sometimes horses didn t exactly agree with his decision making so he would end up in bushes and on the ground more than anything else W lffer s mother also rode having learned the basics growing up in England where her family had established the well known retailer Marks Spencer But she preferred flatwork and dressage to jumping unlike her daughter and husband they wanted to jump Horses and family played integral roles in W lffer s early life Her favorite memories from her childhood involve either one or the other often both During these formative years W lffer was also learning from the two about dedication and achievement from the horses entrepreneurship from her father and design from her mother I grew up in a creative and colorful household said W lffer It was inspiring Now I don t do anything in my life that s not colorful

In pursuit of opportunity Joey W lffer W lffer studied human and organizational development at Vanderbilt University before moving to London U K to pursue a career in fashion At the time she was making beaded jewelry and the pieces sold well I made earrings for Jill Stuart and she said This is what you should do W lffer said As fate would have it W lffer soon accepted a job in London to work for a jewelry company With her enthusiasm and her ideas W lffer stood out and earned a position as the head designer From there W lffer continued her career in the U S learning all aspects of the fashion industry with director roles at large companies like the Accessory Network Group and Jones Apparel Group I learned every job I would possibly need to know for jewelry said W lffer At the Jones Group I worked with the trend team in jewelry which involved a lot of travel But when the economy crashed and budgets were cut I had to do all the trends from the computer I would find insight into what was coming for trends I still enjoy that I ve done consulting jobs for it It s my thing As W lffer s corporate career progressed a major life event changed the course of her life her father died unexpectedly on New Year s Eve 2008 He would always say that I needed to do my own business W lffer said But I knew I needed to learn everything and to make my own mistakes on someone else s dollar Then a year after my dad passed my husband and I turned to each other and we decided that we didn t want to be in the same place in our lives in another year So I started The Styleliner Truck which launched in March 2010 Sag Harbor Palm Beach Building a brand Over the years The Styleliner has grown to include two brick and mortar locations in the Hamptons and in Palm Beach Fla Alongside it W lffer launched an eponymous fashion line which features handbags clothing and jewelry Concurrently W lffer joined the family businesses W lffer Estate Vineyard W lffer Estate Stables and W lffer Kitchen What I want to do is really build my own brand its team and designs and build a business that way said W lffer It has to be at the right time in my life and now I m really pushing more into that It s this desire that continues to drive W lffer To grow more means to give more to the community and to the team that surrounds her and to build something that she can share and pass along to her daughters I think it s growing something I really believe in and have 12 other people believe in because they see what I see said W lffer about what inspires her work People recognize you re working hard toward building a brand a lifestyle and getting there that s a huge achievement I get up every day and do my thing I m trying to do my part in my world But it s setting goals and achieving them that gives me a thrill And the biggest lesson she s learned on her business journey To fight hard and at times on your own Not everyone is out for your best W lffer explained To have somebody who really doesn t want the best for you or your brand is a harsh reality But as my career grows and as I become more successful I never waver from who I am I have no ego and I think that s something I work on every day TCE ________________ TheCompetitiveEquestrian July August 2018

Joey W lffer and Antonov Photo Shelli Breidenbach Horses in the Hamptons The common thread throughout W lffer s life is horses It s where the goal oriented success originated And it s a pillar of the foundation on which W lffer has built her life Here too W lffer has goals to ride in the high amateur division in show jumping Currently she competes two horses Antonov her trusted veteran and Double Deuce Retto a developing talent that s brave but still likes to grab the bit and run according to W lffer Finding the time to compete can be a challenge in and of itself for the designer and entrepreneur but that hasn t stopped her from finishing the prior season ranked fifth nationally in the medium amateurs with Antonov regardless of limited ring time and a pregnancy Riding has taught me to be very diligent good with my time and to figure out a way to do it said W lffer You have to set your schedule and commit to it It shapes you as a person and it teaches sacrifice It s little surprise then that W lffer s daughters will follow her footsteps into riding and horses Already her eldest 3 year old Nell loves to graze and hang out with the family s miniature horse Dolly An added aspect of riding that W lffer shares and will pass along to her girls is The Hampton Classic The Hampton Classic is my home turf W lffer said My mother never comes to shows but that s when she and my family come to see me I m always proud to be riding there and this year I m going to ride in that field in the highs If we re clear I know my horse can win July August 2018 In addition to participating in the show since its inception in 1982 W lffer is also a sponsor and serves on the board As though that s not enough participation at last year s competition W lffer and her W lffer Estate Vineyard table won the annual Hampton Classic table d cor contest The table d cor contest really is a true competition and we always try to center it around a product W lffer said Last year we worked with an awesome florist They understood the vision It was a tropical theme that featured our Finca Ros I want this to continue she added about the heritage horse show It s synonymous with summer in the Hamptons Every year ends with this event It s a celebration of summer and horses Plus it s in our backyard There s nothing about it that I don t love W lffer Estate Vineyard TCE ________________ TheCompetitiveEquestrian 13

A legacy continued This year marks the 30th anniversary for W lffer Estate Vineyard Since its beginning Christian W lffer worked hard to cultivate innovation and a timelessness in the winery s lifestyle experience traits that W lffer and her half brother Marc W lffer are preserving It s with this same approach of authenticity that W lffer approaches her own stores and brand I don t follow trends she said Bohemian is my style and message and that doesn t change for me I ve always preached it to the winery and the restaurants that when you change to be like others that s when you fail Staying true to herself is as equally important for her brand and businesses as it is for her family Whenever I feel any working mom guilt for having to go to work or go on a trip it s knowing that this is what I want to be for my kids W lffer continued They re the future and I m lucky that I m able to work for them and for myself Some people don t have the choice I hope that they will respect me for that I m hoping to show them what it s like to be an independent woman today setting goals and achieving them even if they feel impossible So what s next for the endlessly energetic W lffer in the next five years Riding wise I want to do a small grand prix she said I hope I have a booming brand doing pop ups all over the world and an accessories line that s synonymous with my name and that s known and loved I d like for the winery to be continuing to grow perhaps with a new hot item And hopefully my kids are still really sweet Wherever life is to take W lffer she ll have her identity shaped by horses made from her dedication to the animal and to the sport And at the end of the day you re sure to find her sat atop Antonov meandering through the family s vines and you ll see her for who she is at her very core W lffer Estate Vineyard line up 14 Joey W lffer TCE ________________ TheCompetitiveEquestrian July August 2018

The Best Years Are Still to Come Vermont Summer Festival Turns 25 By Lindsay Brock Jump Media The Vermont Summer Festival showgrounds at Harold Beebe Farm in East Dorset VT from above Photograph by Lisa Cueman A quarter of a century ago a tiny horse show sprouted up in the parking lot of a popular ski resort in Killington VT The show had a bit of the feel of a carnival at the base of a mountain everything from footing to bathrooms was trucked in and the show attracted modest participant numbers from throughout Vermont neighboring states in the Northeastern U S and Southeastern Canadian provinces With that humble beginning the Vermont Summer Festival was born From the moment the first horse set foot at the Vermont Summer Festival its popularity swelled and expansion began When the event outgrew its location in Killington it stayed true to its Vermont roots and moved to yet another ski area parking lot at Sugarbush Resort in Warren VT just southwest of Waitsfield It was there that the circuit caught the attention of John Ammerman Invited to judge at the event in Warren Ammerman was intrigued Soon after he took the show over as manager and transitioned it to yet another location in Waitsfield One of show jumping s most respected judges for more than three decades Ammerman was a U S Equestrian Federation R jumper judge and one of only two FEI O level judges in the U S He was inducted into the Show Jumping Hall of Fame in 2011 after serving the sport in several capacities in addition to managing the Vermont Summer Festival Ammerman managed the Washington International Horse Show for nearly three decades and also oversaw such shows as the Potomac 60 Horse Festival Upperville Colt and Horse Show Ox Ridge Charity Horse Show and HITS Horse Shows in Indio CA and Ocala FL In addition he ran a business that provided jump equipment to horse shows and his jumps made appearances at the 1979 Pan American Games in San Juan Puerto Rico the 1980 World Cup Final in Baltimore MD and the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles CA Internationally Ammerman served on the ground jury at two Olympic Games and was President of the Ground Jury at various FEI World Cup Finals Pan American Games and CSIO Nations Cup events in Washington D C and New York NY He also served as Foreign Judge for CSIO Nations Cups at two prestigious Canadian events the Royal Horse Show in Toronto ON and the Spruce Meadows Masters in Calgary AB I am proud to say that after 25 years we are still here and continuing to grow and thrive said Ammerman of his tenure with the Vermont Summer Festival now based in East Dorset VT The show has experienced quite the evolution including being based at two locations in one season After making a move to the Manchester area to better serve the largest concentration of their exhibitors the Vermont Summer Festival still ran several weeks of the show in Waitsfield presenting an interesting logistical hurdle We would start in Manchester for a few weeks and then make an overnight move to Waitsfield and continue showing said Ammerman who now splits his time between Manchester VT and Ocala FL with his wife Dotty who continues to compete as an TCE ________________ TheCompetitiveEquestrian July August 2018

amateur I think I contracted basically every tractor trailer in the state of Vermont to help with the move They showed up and we literally broke down the show loaded it all on the trucks hauled it the 100 miles to Waitsfield set it back up and started showing again It all happened in matter of hours not weeks of days It was quite the operation After eventually securing six weeks of consecutive summer horse showing in East Dorset the Vermont Summer Festival found a permanent home at Harold Beebe Farm In turn Ammerman transformed the boutique horse show and its location into a gem on the North American summer circuit When we realized that the Manchester area is where we belonged we put all our efforts into the show grounds he said We made and continue to make improvements year after year We put all our eggs in one basket and made it a pretty great basket Ammerman considers the Vermont Summer Festival a destination circuit with top competition coupled with an area that s rich with entertainment dining lodging and shopping options for exhibitors to enjoy when not competing As the Vermont Summer Festival celebrates its 25th anniversary this year the efforts of Ammerman and his entire team are not lost on visitors to the event From riders to trainers to horse show moms and dads the sentiment that the Vermont Summer Festival is an event that caters to happy horses and exhibitors is universal From panoramic views of the rolling mountain of southern Vermont to endless options for after hours entertainment the Vermont Summer Festival is summer horse showing at its best Matthew Metell and Donchalant Photo by Andrew Ryback Photography John Ammerman right pictured with his wife Dotty Photo by David Mullinix The Vermont Summer Festival By The Numbers When it started the Vermont Summer festival included 200 stalls and two competition rings Today the event has grown to nearly 1 400 stalls and five competition rings offering hunter jumper and equitation competition The East Dorset location includes 14 iconic blue and white stabling tents that can be spotted for miles in any direction Each summer the Vermont Summer Festival hires 20 seasonal crew members to impeccably maintain the grounds and the rings Between five rings and adjacent warm up and lunging areas there are 750 tons of sand that are mixed with fiber to create footing The fiber arrives in roughly 15 square bales totaling 80 000 lbs in weight In 2018 the base and footing in all rings will be upgraded and improved for the safety and enjoyment of horses and riders alike Each summer Eastern Hay and Grain the official feed supplier of the Vermont Summer Festival delivers 1 500 bales of hay supplemented by other deliveries and 1 000 bags of Purina grain for the hundreds of hungry horses that come and go each summer Riders USA and Riders Europe Photo SportFot The last delivery in the preparation of each season is the delivery of the stars of the show the horses They are trucked in from all corners of the country by the official horse carrier of the event Johnson Horse Transportation

Team Europe Prevails In Epic Speed Battle For Riders Masters Cup At Longines Masters of New York By Molly Sorge Team USA Team Europe preparing to face off SportFot W hat happens when a team of Europe s top riders arrives at the Longines Masters of New York for an epic showdown with some of the best U S riders in a team competition full of speed and strategy The crowds shout themselves hoarse the riders go for broke and the excitement is palpable flat out galloping to best Ward s time by more than a second and clinch the Riders Europe win We went down to the wire in Paris and we went down to the wire again Ridland said That final duel was really one for the ages We put up one hell of a fight and a great second half comeback And that s exactly what happened at the Riders Masters Cup on April 28 as Riders USA with chef d equipe Robert Ridland at the helm went head to head with the team of Riders Europe led by chef d equipe Phillipe Guerdat of Switzerland The result came down to the very last rounds as the world s best poured on the speed in the battle for the blue and the top winner s share of the 200 000 prize money Riders USA and Ridland were hungry for a win as the Riders Europe team had taken victory at the inaugural first leg of the Riders Masters Cup at the Longines Masters of Paris in December Ridland had Olympic gold medalists Beezie Madden McLain Ward and Laura Kraut in his line up along with top talents Georgina Bloomberg and Adrienne Sternlicht Riders Masters Cup is presented by EEM in collaboration with the European Equestrian Federation EEF and with Longines as a founding partner A new annual equestrian competition the Riders Masters Cup bridges the first and third leg of EEM s Longines Masters Series which presents one of the most prestigious show jumping events in the world spanning three continents Europe Asia and North America Season III of the Longines Masters Series kicked off in Paris last December traveled to Hong Kong in February and premiered in New York in April In the end the Riders Europe team nosed ahead for the victory in the very last round of the competition where the U S and European riders raced in head to head speed duels over two rounds It was all on the line when last to go for the U S McLain Ward laid down a blistering last ride on HH Gigi s Girl But Harrie Smolders NED took up the challenge and turned in a round full of daring turns and 64 The U S riders faced off against some European veterans Kevin Staut FRA Harrie Smolders Olivier Philippaerts BEL Gregory Wathelet BEL and Peder Fredricson SWE And at the end of Round 1 it seemed as if the Riders Europe team was firmly in control of the class Riders from each team were paired up to compete over a speed round and the winner of each duel earned a point for their team After Round 1 Riders Europe led the points tally by 4 to 1 But the Riders USA team blazed back as Round 2 where the points were doubled began Kraut scored 2 points as the first U S rider out of the gate beating Philippaerts soundly with her round aboard Hello Guv nor Then Madden put the Riders USA team ahead 5 to 4 with her win against Staut Madden was fresh off her win in the Longines FEI World Cup Final and brought the crowd to their feet with her lightning quick round aboard Jiva It was only fitting that the next win from Riders USA came from hometown favorite Bloomberg who piloted Paola 233 to a TCE ________________ TheCompetitiveEquestrian July August 2018

masterfully fast round to defeat Wathelet and put the score at 7 to 4 The excitement was ramping up in the spectators and in the Riders USA camp as the team pulled ahead but the class was far from over A rail for Sternlicht in her second round meant the points for that win went to Fredricson putting the Riders Europe team on 6 points and definitely within striking range with just one more pair to race Smolders and Ward They re two of the fastest riders in the world and the Riders Masters Cup fate rested on their shoulders Ward set the tone with a beautiful and blazingly fast round on HH Gigi s Girl putting all the pressure on Smolders But the Dutch phenom currently ranked No 1 in the world was up to the challenge He kicked Cas 2 into a whole other gear and raced around the course to stop the timers almost 2 seconds faster than Ward had His round put the Riders Europe ahead by a nose as the final score was 8 to 7 We knew Team USA would be strong tonight because after Paris they wanted to win back home said Team Europe s chef d equipe Guerdat I think it s more difficult to win not on your home turf but I have a team who are all champions and the best in the world at the moment It would be difficult to get a better team than this in Europe Harry Smolders NED Cas 2 Jessica Rodrigues x JUMPFAX for EEM Ridland noted that he wasn t too worried after Round 1 as he had faith that his team could rebound We clawed our way back he said That s what the sport is about We ll be back again it s a great format Fans and riders alike enjoyed the easy to understand and speedbased format of the class where wins in head to head duels over two rounds resulted in points for each team I found it very exciting and it s quite easy to follow which is always difficult when you re taking an individual sport and making it a team event said Ward You want a system where it s exciting to the end and the Riders Masters Cup was a great example of that It came down to the very last jump The only thing that went wrong is that the Europeans won so we ll have to do it again It s really exciting to see the top riders in the world going for speed said Ridland It s a great format and I think everybody got their money s worth We ll be back again The next installment of the Riders Masters Cup takes place on December 1 during the Longines Masters of Paris which runs November 30 December 2 For more information on the Longines Masters Series visit www LonginesMasters com and for news on the upcoming Riders Masters Cup events go to www RidersMastersCup com McLain Ward USA Clinta Sportfot July August 2018 Robert Ridland Photo Robert Ridland A Victorious Team Europe Celebrating Success on the Podium World Red Eye TCE ________________ TheCompetitiveEquestrian 65

Bridle Choices Pros and Cons Part III of series on Bridles By Jochen Schleese CMS CSFT CSE 2018 Saddlefit 4 Life All Rights Reserved In this last instalment in my series on bridles I wanted to list a number of the most popular bridles available with some of their features and benefits For all of the different designs remember that nosebands which are too restrictive can cause the horse to focus on the tension and pressure in and on his head limiting the ability to focus and respond with proper muscle movement in the rest of his body The horse s biology does not change from discipline to discipline in riding even though the headrestraining devices do all of which are designed to control and communicate to the horse what the rider wants The horse will learn what to do to relieve pressure and discomfort which can have further ramifications at the distal end of the body as he attempts to avoid pain Give the horse the freedom to communicate using its mouth comfort will result in a quiet relaxed jaw and mouth SWEDISH Bridle or SNAFFLE WITH A FLASH NOSEBAND Extra padding under the noseband buckle makes this more comfortable than the English style bridle Other than that it is very similar to the combination bridle with the extra flash Care must be taken that the anatomy of the head allows enough room to buckle both the noseband and the flash properly Horses with relatively smaller heads do well with this type This bridle is often buckled too tightly given the false sense of comfort the extra padding at the noseband provides Combination or Snaffle Bridle with Flash Noseband COMBINATION Bridle or SNAFFLE WITH A FLASH NOSEBAND rolled reins throatlatch cheek pieces and noseband This commonly used type has an additional flash to assist in keeping the horse s mouth shut and the tongue in The noseband should be buckled high enough to avoid interfering with the generally snaffle bit English or Snaffle Bridle ENGLISH Bridle or SNAFFLE Bridle Swedish or Snaffle Bridle with Flash Noseband 68 The noseband on this bridle should lie 1 2 fingers below the zygomatic arch It is popular for thoroughbreds who prefer more freedom in their mouths If your horse likes to put his tongue over the bit this is not a style for you Using a rolled noseband puts more pressure on the nose as well TCE ________________ TheCompetitiveEquestrian July August 2018

Hanoverian or Drop Noseband Bridle Mexican Grackle or Figure 8 Bridle HANOVERIAN or DROP NOSEBAND Bridle MEXICAN GRACKLE or FIGURE 8 Bridle The noseband lies about 4 fingers above the nostrils past the bit This style used to be much more popular but it is not a pretty looking bridle It relays the pressure from the reins directly from the lower jaw onto the nose It does prevent horses from putting their tongues over the bit Some riders still prefer to use this as it has less leather and buckles which lowers the risk of impacting sensitive nerves and acupuncture points Loose snaffle rings and the ability to breathe without hindrance are two of the main attractions of this bridle It is easily recognizable having crossing leather straps over the nose with a leather rosette in the centre The upper piece crosses the zygomatic arch The only pressure point is in the centre from the rosette piece It has only recently been allowed for use in dressage rings The only danger is if it is buckled too tightly and thus pushes the bit up into the corners of the lips Micklem Bridle Shutterstock Hackamore Bridle Shutterstock MICKLEM Bridle HACKAMORE This option has an extra strap attaching the bit to the bridle It is extremely comfortable for the horse and supports the chewing motion This bitless option puts pressure on the nose through a lever action at the sides of the noseband Although probably effective for a while the horse soon gets accustomed to the pressure on the nose and becomes less responsive over time It s a good alternative for interim use if a horse has an injury in the mouth but there is almost no substitute for the necessary additional aid of an outside rein in the higher classes July August 2018 TCE ________________ TheCompetitiveEquestrian 69

I found this excellent checklist regarding the use of nosebands for you to consider b How sensitive is your horse Highly sensitive horses do best with no nosebands or loose ones a Educate yourself on the nerves functions and anatomy of the horse s head c Determine the best type to fit your horse s nose shape and head conformation d Your horse still needs to have full physiological movement yawn swallow and lick its lips C e Use padding judiciously most bridles are already made to provide full comfort and extra padding can increase the pressure H M E B K F f LISTEN to your horse Tension creates tension restriction creates restriction The new breed of totally custom anatomically correct bridles which are now available purport to help your horse perform better by relieving pressure on the sensitive areas of the head and head To sort out all the options that are now available the rider should definitely educate themselves to understand the conformation of the horse s head to make the right decision for their horse s One size one type one make does definitely not fit all Having said that a wellfitted appropriately padded ergonomically designed bridle will help to distribute pressure more evenly good for the horse of course but also good for riders who may have less educated hands A 70 TCE ________________ TheCompetitiveEquestrian July August 2018

Board of Directors www EINW org President s Report By Diana Axness It s summer and the Northwest equestrian events calendar is full of shows and clinics Please check out what Equestrians Institute has to offer Dressage Report By Gunn Cooper On May 19 and 20th we had the first of three dressage clinic weekends in the 2018 series This is the second year of organizing a quarterly dressage clinic series Unfortunately Lilo Fore was not able to return this year so Anne Gribbons talked Jan Ebeling in to become her Pas De Deux partner for 2018 All the riders really enjoyed working with Jan He emphasized the importance of using the half halt to raise up the front and to get the back end to sit down He also talked about the importance to let go and not hold the half halt for more than one or two steps The assessment needs to be done in the let go This is very important as the horse views the let go as a reward and hanging on to the reins too long will cause stiffness and resistance Regina Agren commented on how much she appreciated that Jan kept repeating corrections to her seat till she finally got it right She said it is often hard to change old habits and many clinicians give up after making one or two comments but not Jan he just kept asking in that same nice but insistent voice Other riders said they really appreciated how much extra time he spent with them at the end of the ride explaining the purpose of each exercise until he felt sure the rider understood BoardofDirectors einw org Diana Axness Trish Camozzi Ekberg Gunn Cooper Meika Decher Merridy Hance Penny Leggott Kathryn Lewis Sarah Johnson Chris Bredeson Laurie McLaughlin Jo Renn diana einw org trish einw org gunn einw org meika einw org merridy einw org penny einw org kathryn einw org sarah einw org chris einw org lauriemc einw org jo einw org Administration Membership Bookkeeper Volunteers Grants Website Email membership einw org bookkeeper einw org volunteers einw org grants einw org webmaster einw org Driving Events Clinic driving einw org Sarah Johnson Diana Axness Merridy Hance Leslie McGinnis sarah einw org diana einw org merridy einw org leslie einw org Eventing Horse Trials Clinics eventing einw org Meika Decher Penny Leggott Heidi Hansen meika einw org penny einw org heidi einw org Dressage Shows Clinics dressage einw org Gunn Cooper Markay Kerr Kathryn Lewis Peter Rothschild Kaye Phaneuf gunn einw org markay einw org kathryn einw org pgr tsandm com phaneuf canby com Sport Horse Breeding Shows Clinics Chris Bredeson Laurie McLaughlin Regina Agren Alison Moss and Jan Ebeling with Alison s Vicaros dos Pinhais July 2018 www EINW org chris einw org lauriemc einw org This year we are using Sheila and Dean Buchanan s Off Broadway Farm in Snohomish as a venue They very graciously made EI the offer of not having to pay a facility fee which in effect will save us 2 100 over three clinics and make them a platinum sponsor They not only have a beautiful facility but Sheila also offered to make all the snack and meal arrangement including signing her husband Dean up for Saturday dinner BBQ grilling duty After the last ride on Saturday afternoon we had a 71
