OSPHOS clodronate injection Bisphosphonate For use in horses only Brief Summary For Full Prescribing Information see package insert CAUTION Federal USA law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian DESCRIPTION Clodronate disodium is a non amino chlorocontaining bisphosphonate Chemically clodronate disodium is dichloromethylene diphosphonic acid disodium salt and is manufactured from the tetrahydrate form INDICATION For the control of clinical signs associated with navicular syndrome in horses CONTRAINDICATIONS Horses with hypersensitivity to clodronate disodium should not receive OSPHOS WARNINGS Do not use in horses intended for human consumption HUMAN WARNINGS Not for human use Keep this and all drugs out of the reach of children Consult a physician in case of accidental human exposure PRECAUTIONS As a class bisphosphonates may be associated with gastrointestinal and renal toxicity Sensitivity to drug associated adverse reactions varies with the individual patient Renal and gastrointestinal adverse reactions may be associated with plasma concentrations of the drug Bisphosphonates are excreted by the kidney therefore conditions causing renal impairment may increase plasma bisphosphonate concentrations resulting in an increased risk for adverse reactions Concurrent administration of other potentially nephrotoxic drugs should be approached with caution and renal function should be monitored Use of bisphosphonates in patients with conditions or diseases affecting renal function is not recommended Administration of bisphosphonates has been associated with abdominal pain colic discomfort and agitation in horses Clinical signs usually occur shortly after drug administration and may be associated with alterations in intestinal motility In horses treated with OSPHOS these clinical signs usually began within 2 hours of treatment Horses should be monitored for at least 2 hours following administration of OSPHOS Easily Administered OSPHOS controls the clinical signs associated with Navicular Syndrome via intramuscular injection Well Tolerated in clinical trials Proven Efficacy at 6 months post treatment No Reconstitution Required Learn more online www dechra us com www osphos com As with all drugs side effects may occur In field studies the most common side effects reported were signs of discomfort or nervousness colic and or pawing OSPHOS should not be used in pregnant or lactating mares or mares intended for breeding Use of OSPHOS in patients with conditions affecting renal function or mineral or electrolyte homeostasis is not recommended Refer to the prescribing information for complete details or visit www dechra us com or call 866 933 2472 CAUTION Federal law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of licensed veterinarian Freedom of Information Summary Original New Animal Drug Application NADA 141 427 for OSPHOS April 28 2014 Dechra Veterinary Products US and the Dechra D logo are registered trademarks of Dechra Pharmaceuticals PLC 2016 Dechra Ltd Bisphosphonates affect plasma concentrations of some minerals and electrolytes such as calcium magnesium and potassium immediately post treatment with effects lasting up to several hours Caution should be used when administering bisphosphonates to horses with conditions affecting mineral or electrolyte homeostasis e g hyperkalemic periodic paralysis hypocalcemia etc The safe use of OSPHOS has not been evaluated in horses less than 4 years of age The effect of bisphosphonates on the skeleton of growing horses has not been studied however bisphosphonates inhibit osteoclast activity which impacts bone turnover and may affect bone growth Bisphosphonates should not be used in pregnant or lactating mares or mares intended for breeding The safe use of OSPHOS has not been evaluated in breeding horses or pregnant or lactating mares Bisphosphonates are incorporated into the bone matrix from where they are gradually released over periods of months to years The extent of bisphosphonate incorporation into adult bone and hence the amount available for release back into the systemic circulation is directly related to the total dose and duration of bisphosphonate use Bisphosphonates have been shown to cause fetal developmental abnormalities in laboratory animals The uptake of bisphosphonates into fetal bone may be greater than into maternal bone creating a possible risk for skeletal or other abnormalities in the fetus Many drugs including bisphosphonates may be excreted in milk and may be absorbed by nursing animals Increased bone fragility has been observed in animals treated with bisphosphonates at high doses or for long periods of time Bisphosphonates inhibit bone resorption and decrease bone turnover which may lead to an inability to repair micro damage within the bone In humans atypical femur fractures have been reported in patients on long term bisphosphonate therapy however a causal relationship has not been established ADVERSE REACTIONS The most common adverse reactions reported in the field study were clinical signs of discomfort or nervousness colic and or pawing Other signs reported were lip licking yawning head shaking injection site swelling and hives pruritus Distributed by Dechra Veterinary Products 7015 College Boulevard Suite 525 Overland Park KS 66211 866 O 3 Minute Tip of the Month The Large Intestine Part 2 Meredith Kahn MS Microorganisms in the large intestine break down nutrients through fermentation This process requires much more time than digestive processes that take place in the small intestine In fact feedstuffs that enter the large intestine can require up to 48 hours for breakdown and formation into fecal material Digestion in the large intestine is dependent on normal motility through the system which involves a specific rate of passage Contents need not move too quickly avoiding suboptimal digestive activity and reduced water absorption However if contents move too slowly impaction becomes a major risk The sac like structure curves and junctions of the large intestine work to slow down rate of passage but can also contribute to impaction Therefore in order to avoid hindgut complications it is especially important to provide the correct balance of dietary components including water hay and grain 503 663 1515 ColumbiaEquine com Columbia Equine Hospital Technology Experience Compassion Columbia Equine Hospital offers a full range of ambulatory in clinic and referral services Your equine athlete or companion will receive quality care from our expert team at our state of the art equine hospital or at your farm We are please to announce that Christy Sandquist DVM will be joining our team this month Scott W Hansen DVM Megan Rioux Forker DVM CVA Greg Schmid DVM Christy Sandquist DVM David Klugh DVM FAVD 27841 SE Orient Dr Gresham OR 97080 Fermentation leads to a number of different products Breakdown of structural carbohydrate or fiber which cannot be digested via enzymes in the small intestine produces volatile fatty acids otherwise known as VFAs These short chain fatty acids are a major source of energy for the horse The three main VFAs produced and absorbed in the large intestine are acetate propionate and butyrate These fatty acids supply enough energy for a typical maintenance horse however working horses require an increased amount of calories This energy can be provided through various methods of supplementation including grain and fat supplementation Other products of fermentation include heat water and gas Vitamin K is a byproduct of microorganism activity in the large intestine which is available for absorption depending on the horse s activity As a result horses are rarely deficient in vitamin K Microorganisms that inhabit the large intestine can break down protein that enters this part of the digestive tract yet the horse cannot absorb protein that is digested here Therefore it is ideal that the majority of protein digestion takes place in the small intestine where the end products can be absorbed and utilized for the horse s benefit Similar to protein fat is ideally digested and absorbed in the small intestine Near the end of the tract water is reabsorbed helping recover fluids that were secreted to aid in digestion and movement through the system Fecal balls are formed and consist of waste that is left over from the digestive processes that have taken place through the tract Questions kathleen o3animalhealth com 6 Your Sport Your News Your Business July 2017

The Love Spark How Becky Gochman Champions Horsemanship By Esther Hahn Becky Gochman and Catch Me The Book LLC B efore Becky Gochman ever owned a horse she fell in love with the animal at the young age of 6 It was a visit to the historic Devon Horse Show that inspired the passion when the magical showgrounds complete with candy tent forever touched Gochman s heart and imagination A couple years after the introductory experience Gochman began riding lessons and by age 11 she owned her first horse Fast forward to present day and Gochman is finding success in the Amateur Owner Hunter ring while passing along her enthusiasm for horses and horse sport to her daughters Sophie 14 and Mimi 12 It all came full circle at the Devon Horse Show at the start of summer when Gochman won the Devon Grand Amateur Owner Hunter Championship title and the Morris H Dixon Memorial Challenge Trophy aboard Gochman Sport Horse LLC s Catch Me 22 We ve owned Catch Me for a couple years Gochman said following her win I had been watching him at the Traverse City Horse Show for a few summers He was produced by Cookie Beck I also had another great amateur horse from her named Last Call I really respect Cookie Beck because she brings her horses along slowly I loved watching Catch Me as a youngster and when I felt that he was getting his lead changes and I saw him do the First Years in the first week of WEF in 2015 I said Wow that really looks like a horse that I want now Gochman s trainer Scott Stewart agreed and soon the handsome gray Holsteiner gelding joined the Gochman s string of horses at the family s Baxter Hill Stewart then began to successfully campaign the horse in the professional divisions But in the summer of 2015 Catch Me became very sick with botulism Luckily he recovered to come back in a strong way www THECOMPTITIVEEQUESTRIAN com July 2017

I think he knows how much he s loved from the experience and he s been a fabulous horse said Gochman We were not sure that he could be an amateur horse however so we tried and we re so thankful that he enjoys it I was well prepared to have him as just a professional s horse but that I could ride him was icing on the cake I just started riding him at this year s Winter Equestrian Festival and it got better and better He just started trusting me more and more and now I feel like I can just loop the reins and have a good time He gives a great feeling The secret to their partnership comes down to one thing according to the rider I feed him tons of carrots she revealed If it s bribery I don t care He really responds to that I believe in giving carrots ringside and before they go in and when they come out I try to keep it really fun for all of our horses More than the winning it s the shared experience with the horses and her family that clearly shines through in Gochman s voice I am very lucky that my daughters both enjoy it very much and that my husband sees the beauty in it she said It s family time we can spend outside and that we can spend together We can see our girls grow in a sport where losing means just as much as winning where we know the people It takes a village to raise children she added And I feel like everybody helps me with my kids Gochman is quick to thank the team that help her and her daughters both in and outside of competition Rivers Edge Farm s Stewart and Ken Berkley train them in the hunters and jumpers Beacon Hill s Stacia Madden helps with the equitation and international Show Jumper Amanda Derbyshire adds wherever she is needed The strong support makes for a tightknit community that surrounds the family which Gochman strives to pay forward We try to give back to the horse community she said It s given so much to us We try to focus on children so that comes with the Gochman Pony Finals grant that enable kids to go to Pony Finals who wouldn t otherwise be able to go Sophie David Becky and Mimi Gochman The Book LLC July 2017 www THECOMPTITIVEEQUESTRIAN com 23

The family also contributes to horse shows that work to educate and to reach the greater public Gochman acknowledges that horse sport is known to be exclusive so she endeavors for and works toward more inclusion That s one reason why Gochman likes to give away her prize ribbons and plates at a show like Devon When I come here and I see all those kids smiling from the sidelines I want to make the magic happen for them as well Gochman said when reminiscing about her own first show experience I appreciate Devon because of the community spirit within the town It s such a joyous special place that brings horses together with the community Everyone seems to be a good mood at Devon she noted The children the parents the spectators it s a really magical place When you drive out of here and see the top of the Ferris wheel even if you ve had a bad day it puts a smile on your face Horses give so much to her and her family Gochman explained that it s a priority for her to share the passion outwardly She also appreciates when shows like Devon and the Washington International Horse Show connect the cities with access to observing horses up close and in the flesh The lucky and random recipient of Catch Me s Championship trophy courtesy of Becky Gochman Alden Corrigan Media Horses are such beautiful magical animals that I feel that if they can bring a smile to just anybody s face for that day that s a really good way for a horse show to be she said The access is a way to educate people about horses and you never know when you re going to spark that interest It s all for the love of the horse as Gochman and her daughters consistently demonstrate alongside their winning ways And if there s just one singular thing to learn from Gochman s approach it s to never forget the carrots Becky Gochman and Catch Me Alden Corrigan Media

Page 47

I came to America when I was 21 for three months and never left said Great Britain s Amanda Derbyshire after a successful Devon Horse Show in June Not only did her clients Becky Sophie and Mimi Gochman win top honors in their respective divisions Derbyshire led the lap of honor in the 35 000 Devon Speed Challenge CSI4 aboard Lady Maria BH owned by Gochman Sport Horse LLC In the same Devon CSI4 week Derbyshire also placed second in the 40 000 Devon International Speed Stake and third in the 225 000 Sapphire Grand Prix of Devon For these efforts Derbyshire was crowned with multiple Devon Horse Show and Country Fair 2017 titles including the Leading Open Jumper Rider and Leading Lady Rider trophies I m ecstatic Derbyshire said at Devon I had a pretty nice show here last year and this has really been everything I ve been dreaming about All of our hard work it s moments like this where it s all worth it The crowd here is like no other That makes it special when you know the crowd is behind you The Gochman kids showed here last weekend and they were champion and grand champion Then Becky who owns the horses was also champion and grand champion too That means all four of us got a piece of Devon this year which is incredible It was all in a day s work for the 28 year old professional rider trainer and manager of the Gochman s Baxter Hill Farm Originally hailing from Lancashire England in a small town where riders continue to hack out on the roads Derbyshire first impressed on an international level during her junior and young rider years She won her first grand prix in Istanbul Turkey in 2006 Her early success eventually led to an opportunity to ride for double gold British Olympian Nick Skelton For a year she helped to produce and compete the young horses preparing them for top level sport with Skelton The experience cemented Derbyshire s thoughts that she wanted to carve a career for herself in horse sport and she accepted a short term position with American Hunter Jumper trainer Andre Dignelli at his Heritage Farm Three July August 2017 Amanda Derbyshire Leading Open Jumper Rider The Book LLC months turned into a year which then led Derbyshire to accept a position with the Gochman family six years ago I feel like Amanda s really taking off and I see her riding constantly improving said Becky Gochman She really takes in everything She wants to learn wants to grow We couldn t ask for anybody nicer than Amanda I think of her as another daughter really And while Gochman s young daughters enjoy and excel in all three arenas they re growing more excited about Show Jumping which can undoubtedly be attributed to their trainer s passion and growing success They love all three disciplines but I think that Sophie and Mimi are really excited right now about their Jumpers Gochman noted I think the Hunters and Equitation really provide a good base for them The Hunters obviously hold a special place in my heart so I m thrilled the girls established their foundation in the Pony Hunters moving up the ranks to the Junior Hunters Amanda gets the kids to really understand the horses she added She makes them work at the barn and she takes them on fun trail rides so they get a little bit of her British background She always has a positive attitude and she makes it a lot of fun for all of us The program at Baxter Hill is finely tuned and managed A central part of the collaboration is that the horses that Derbyshire pilots in competition will soon be handed down to the Gochman girls for the Junior Jumper divisions Derbyshire will then acquire new horses from her contacts in England to develop and to add more world ranking points to her FEI record YOUR NEWS YOUR SPORT YOUR BUSINESS 45

Amanda Derbyshire and Cornwall BH The Book LLC Derbyshire s advice to talented young riders hoping to follow a similar career path and to compete at the international level is to work hard It s all about working hard she stated Obviously it s also about getting a chance I got a great chance meeting Becky Gochman I ve been in the U S seven years And Becky is like my second mother I m lucky to have found them As Derbyshire spoke about their close relationship she teared up clearly showing their close bond and deep care for one another I d never seen America before I came here for three months and I never left said Derbyshire I go home a couple times and my family comes here They re happy for me And with all the technology they stay up and watch me on the livestream They re not missing much Growing up riding and competing on the English circuit I rode many different types of ponies and horses said Derbyshire who is currently ranked in the top 8 in British Show Jumping I developed a natural eye for a distance 46 and learned to have a good fight in the ring but my riding probably lacked a little finesse In America studying the equitation lessons and the specifics of doing the right strides in the hunters I now feel that I have combined what I have learned from the U S system with my British background to be competitive at the highest level I feel very lucky to have found Becky and David Gochman They are supporting my career and are so encouraging for me to try and get to the top of the sport Derbyshire aims to be a part of Team Great Britain s Nations Cup squad in Europe in 2018 So with family support from both her home country and her adopted one Derbyshire is well on her way to a storied career And she hopes her track is one that can inspire another generation that with a lot of hard work and a little luck there s no limit to a career with horses The summer season for Baxter Hill continued from Devon with stops at Upperville Va Lake Placid N Y and Lexington Ky before concluding at the Hampton Classic YOUR NEWS YOUR SPORT YOUR BUSINESS July August 2017

Morning Person Macella O Neil I should start off by confessing that I have always been a morning person who pops out of bed before my alarm even has a chance to go off and I think it s well known that horses thrive in early work schedules as evidenced by training programs in every discipline from the racetrack to many top show jumping barns It s also well known that the end of the day is the toughest time to get horses best performances out of them thus the axiom if you want to see the worst of a horses behavior try it during the witching hour when the day is winding down and dinner is being served This has always made sense to me as horses are prey animals and all the predators do come out to hunt as the sun sets And you can certainly see the worst of me when the day is winding down and my thoughts turn to food So for the most part I enjoy a happily compatible rhythm with my equine partners This happy equation however gets sorely tested and I think abused at horse shows Why special events such as Grand Prixs and Hunter Derbies frequently have an end of the day start time to say nothing of why the AA Jumpers routinely are the last class of the day is completely beyond me We have all been victimized by the sliding start times as the show days 79 Acre Ranch progress and the schedules fall further and further behind making managing the horses day in terms of feeding times and just knowing when to actually get them out of the stalls and ready a nearly impossible challenge To say nothing of watching all involved spectators horses and riders squinting and straining into a variably setting sun which really seems the ultimate unfairness to me In a large class the first half of the class may go in decent light but by the second half the shadows and glare can be virtually incapacitating Years ago we ran a really fun show called the Napa Valley Classic and it s featured event was a Saturday night class that was a very well supported and attended fund raiser that started at 6 30 and had a big dinner with catered tables etc Unsurprisingly we quickly realized that we simply never got horses from the twilight time in the top ten and invariably fielded complaints about the order from those who had been handicapped by the setting sun while those who went at the start had not been similarly challenged In all sports the goal is a level playing field it s why it s such a relief from life in my opinion and having only a portion of the competitors not be able to see the jumps really seems just completely unacceptable to say nothing of dangerous 50 1 acres flood irrigated Zoned EFU Home shop and arena sit on a knoll overlooking the valley Gated entry bass pond 3796 sqft 4 bedroom 3 full and 2 half bath home Covered arena 2 tack rooms and a viewing area fully insulated shop with 3162 sqft 5 roll up doors compressed air dust collector wine room that is temperature climate controlled Completely fenced and has great hay pastures riding trails two ponds seasonal creek 1 890 000 Colby Kielman Broker Licensed in Oregon as Michelle Colby Kielman 800 772 7284 www HarcourtsOROP com In our case after our second year concluded we sent out a letter in August the month after our event which was held in July and announced that we would be changing the start time of the class to 8 pm and running it under lights We ran an incredibly lucrative and very fun mounted Calcutta preceding the class at the old start time of 6 30 had a couple of fun awards ceremonies and then everyone competed under the lights Night classes are very special and hugely popular with the spectactators as well as very memorable for riders Our lights were not great but they were for sure sufficient everyone knew exactly what time they would be starting what conditions they would be riding in could manage their days accordingly most importantly to me everyone competed under the exact same conditions Obviously my favorite thing in the world would be morning Grand Prixs failing that I think they should either go mid day with actual start times in the same light for all or go at night under lights again with start times and universal light conditions for all Honestly to me these requirements seem like nothing more than bare necessities

F alling off is part of riding for some equestrians the first time a rider hits the dirt is a rite of passage Learning to fall however doesn t fit into most riding school s curriculum It s simply accepted as an inevitable and unavoidable consequence of spending time on horseback How to fall off safely is the missing gap in the safety protocols of equestrian sport a gap that Keli and Danny Warrington are trying to fill Keli and Danny are the creators and clinicians behind LandSafe Equestrian an innovative program designed to teach riders how to and when to fall Once you step on a horse you have inherent risk Having an exit strategy is the first step in decreasing the risk of our sport Keli Warrington teaching a rider at a clinic Photo by Amy Ethridge Mastering the Exit Strategy WITH LANDSAFE EQUESTRIAN By Cori Townsend Everybody knows where the exits are on an airplane the hand signals are universal Why don t people know where the exits are when their horse is rearing up and about to flip over How come we don t know how to land in a rotational fall situation How come we don t know where the exits are off of our horse and we only know crash and burn With their unique histories and experience with and without horses the Warringtons have worked to create curriculum for equestrians by equestrians with a foundation in basic gymnastics Keli was a nationally ranked gymnast for over 10 years before she shifted her focus to Eventing She has ridden through the CCI level and has spent the last 10 years as the owner and manager of Warrington Eventing Her passion for gymnastics and equestrian sport have allowed her the opportunity to experience the benefits of good body awareness and its influence on her ability to safely stick the landing during a fall Danny has spent most of his life as a professional rider Throughout his early career as a leading steeplechase jockey and while competing internationally as an Advanced Three Day Eventer Danny s has curated a deep passion for safety Growing up fox hunting with his father he has spent his life studying and learning from the reactions of other riders observations which he uses to teach the missing link between the reaction to falling and the correct safest response to the fall This is a high risk sport and there are a lot of things that could happen There are also a lot of things that don t have to happen if you re properly trained and educated Safety at the end of the day is education The

more educated you are the safer you are After making the decision to retire from competitive riding last March Danny and Keli began working in earnest on the LandSafe program I d always thought of creating a program like this so we really went to work on it Danny recalls We went to the trampoline park looked at what other countries were doing and looked at where safety was heading They even traveled to Australia to work with Lindsay Nylund creator of Horse Rider Fall Safety Training and Together with Lindsay Danny and Keli created their own gymnastics program and tailored it to work with The Simulator The Simulator was designed to create real life fall scenarios using multiple speed and fall options Its air filled padded mats help ensure rider safety even during a rotational fall simulation The Warringtons can record each fall capturing the progress of riders as they become more adept at falling correctly and use the recordings to deliver feedback to riders We teach you the things that can make a difference in a catastrophic fall Simple things like move your eyes to the side find the brace position let go of the reins understand what that moment is One of the things we can do with the Simulator is answer the question of when is when That moment is when gravity takes over Once we show you what that feels like we can explain it to you Each LandSafe clinic begins with a discussion of the standard myths of falling before transitioning into a progression based practice of the proper ways to fall The first myth they cover Don t put your hands in front of you when you fall off The science shows that if you re on your way to a direct head injury Danny explains and your arms are in front of you in the correct way you can substantially decrease the force of impact and reduce the fracture rate July 2017 Learning to fall using The Simulator Photo by Amy Ethridge Techniques such as their brace position act as the foundation for transitioning into various rolling and diving exercises all of which are designed to teach riders ways that they can prepare for a fall situation and safely stick the landing The first time you do it it s very slow and methodical Some of the comments we get on social media are that the machine is too slow so it won t work but the reality is that just like in football you don t learn the movements at full speed You need to practice at half speed and using repetition it s an education process Their website showcases some of the movements covered in their clinics all of which are designed to instill a sense of security and safety in riders In the same way that gymnasts are trained on fall techniques before they YOUR NEWS YOUR SPORT YOUR BUSINESS 55

Working through gymnastics at a LandSafe clinic Photo by Amy Ethridge begin tumbling or walking on the beam the Warrington s LandSafe clinics are designed to teach every rider regardless of discipline how to fall so they are prepared in any scenario People call us all the time after clinics and tell us how much more confident they are in their riding If you re more confident you re less likely to fall off So you re more educated and you re already a better rider because you re not as fearful So we ve removed some of that fear and now you re safer because you know what you re doing and you have a response to a reaction Keli and Danny have a full schedule ahead of them over the next year A series of clinics goals to integrate their program into Universities and plans to bring a Simulator to Australia and Europe are in the works I ve always felt that you can do better This is a program that s designed to help fill the missing gap in the safety of our sport To learn more about LandSafe watch their videos or to register for an upcoming clinic please visit them at www landsafeequestrian com 56 Danny Warrington in action Photo by Amy Ethridge YOUR NEWS YOUR SPORT YOUR BUSINESS July 2017

Neck Problems Causes Treatment Options By Dr Sylvia Ouellette W hen most people think of problems in the horse related to the neck or cervical region most assume that it is a neurological issue Typically these include stumbling ataxia weakness muscle loss or falling down Neck problems however can also cause lameness issues from pain and not just neurological signs Many subtle lamenesses that don t seem to have a distinct underlying cause may be attributable to the neck and not actually the limbs Let s talk about anatomy of the neck The cervical vertebrae there are seven of them in the horse have to hold up the horse s head and support and the body Like all vertebrae they have a disc space a space in the middle for the canal that houses the spinal cord articulating surfaces joints that help the neck bend and move together as a unit and the spinous processes that attach the many important ligaments and muscles to the neck see photo A of bones and photo B of normal radiographs of the cervical vertebrae The articulating joint spaces which are the dorsal or top part of the bones are subjected to bending and stretching motions and can develop arthritis over time Trauma can also cause the joints to develop arthritis see photo C of fractured dorsal articular facet Some neurological problems can also cause these joint to remodel over time The problem then becomes pain on bending the neck or pain due to pinching of the spinal nerves that exit the cord and supply sensation to the body Clinical signs can range from subtle front end lamenesses such as tripping often especially going one direction vs another shortness on one or multiple limbs a gait that changes when the horse is collected or is asked to be in a frame reluctance to bend or side pass to one side or another to overt lameness Lamenesses that are worked up by the Veterinarian but do not block to the lower limb using diagnostic nerve blocks to isolate the lameness and the horse continues to be lame should be evaluated for neck pain Some hind limb lameness can also be attributed to the neck so should not be overlooked when a lameness becomes difficult to localize to the limbs Often times the gait abnormalities or lamenesses will not be noted on the lunge line or in hand and can only be seen when the horse is ridden under saddle Back pain must be differentiated in these cases from neck pain Pain on manipulation of the neck can be elicited and oftentimes you may notice a decreased range of motion when the horse is asked to do carrot stretches from one side or another Once we have decided that the problem is originating from the neck the next step is usually radiographs The questions that we want answered are Does the canal that holds the cord seem narrowed Do the articular facets top joint spaces look larger or have arthritis see photo D of cervical vertebrae with arthritis Are the foramen or spaces between the vertebrae that the nerves come out on the sides between the vertebrae narrowed and are pinching a nerve While we cannot see the actual spinal cord on a radiograph the bony canal that it sits in can be seen and there are measurements that determine if the canal is a normal size or narrowed which might be an indication the cord could be getting pinched inside of this space Ultimately if your horse is having neurological signs and the canal appears narrowed your Veterinarian might recommend a myelogram to see if the cord is actually involved A Cervical vertebrae The Yellow arrows point to the dorsal articular facets joint spaces of C3 4 and C4 5 B Normal Cervical Radiograph The small white arrows point to the disk spaces The large Yellow arrows point to the dorsal articular facets C Cervical Vertebrae C6 C7 The small white arrows point to a small chip fracture of the joint space with secondary arthritis If the dorsal articular facets the bones that make up the joint in the cervical vertebrae are enlarged or the foramen appear narrowed due to this enlargement you can also follow up or use ultrasound as a diagnostic tool This will look at the surface of the joint spaces and bones and allow us to see if it looks normal or enlarged See photo E of ultrasound image Other types of imaging can be performed to fully identify the parts of the neck that may be involved A nuclear scintigraphy scan or bone scan see photo F of a nuclear scintigraphic report may be helpful to determine which vertebrae may be affected Additionally an MRI can be performed on an anesthetized horse to allow us to see 64 YOUR NEWS YOUR SPORT YOUR BUSINESS D Cervical Vertebrae C6 C7 Radiograph The dorsal articular facet yellow arrow is grossly enlarged with arthritis compared to the dorsal articular facet of C5 6 to the left of the marked facet July 2017

Meadow Grove Farm Guides Young Jumper Riders to Success Rising show jumping stars Hannah Heidegger and Vani Khosla both showed their skills when they swept the 25 000 Markel Insurance Grand Prix Taking home first and second respectively and edging out a full class of experienced professionals at the competitive Showpark Ranch Coast Heidegger and Khosla both train with Meadow Grove Farm The barn network certainly showcased its tight bonds and strong friendships as Heidegger and Khosla congratulated one another for jobs well done despite the competitive atmosphere swirling around them Heidegger who worked with Olympian Will Simpson for several years began training with Dick Carvin Susie Schroer and Zazou Hoffman of Meadow Grove Farm nine months ago Even as a newer addition to the Meadow Grove family Heidegger has reaped the benefits of the detail oriented individualized program The trainers all complement each other so well but also each bring something unique to the training program she described And on top of the fantastic training one of the main things that makes Meadow Grove so special is the support system among all the riders in the barn The other riders are so supportive and kind She scored the win in the Markel Insurance Grand Prix aboard Monarch International s nine year old gelding Di Caprio RV Though the twenty year old rider was celebrating her third grand prix win it was her young equine partner s first time leading a grand prix victory gallop The pair has moved up through the jumper divisions together since joining forces three years ago Talented since her pony days Heidegger s ability has been unwavering as the jumps and the stakes have risen Her star performance in the Markel Insurance Grand Prix also earned her the blue ribbon in the Interactive Mortgage Under 25 Series Qualifier which runs concurrently For Khosla it was a week of consistency She and her trusty steed twelve year old Billy Mexico whom she s had for upwards of two and a half years now were quick and careful in both the 25 000 Markel Insurance Grand Prix and the 60 000 Grand Prix of California presented by Equ Lifestyle Boutique After gracefully advancing to the jump offs of each class Khosla wowed the crowds with seemingly unbeatable jump off times It was by fractions of seconds that she finished with the red ribbon in both events Billy continues to amaze me every time we go in the ring which I keep thinking isn t possible When things are in sync like that and we re on a roll there s no better feeling she said My strategy was the same both times which is probably why I had the same result twice I know Billy really well at this point so mostly I try to identify which points on course are going to be difficult for us and July 2017 Vani Khosla and Billy Mexico McCool Photography make sure I know exactly what we ll need to do there I spend a lot of the course walk identifying where he ll need extra support and making sure I m prepared to give it The blazing duo has progressed to the grand prix level under the tutelage of the same team that has taken Heidegger under its wing A student of Meadow Grove s for over three years Khosla has gained a deep understanding of the steps that need to be taken in order to improve as opposed to simply keeping her eye on the prize In a lot of ways as riders we know in the big picture what we need to do to be better but it can be hard to get from point A to point B At Meadow Grove they are really patient in their teaching and I ve found a lot of my improvement has happened over time without me realizing she explained A collection of lessons learned culminated in sweet success for Heidegger and Khosla at Showpark Ranch Coast These young jumper sensations will continue to gain miles and aim for more accolades on the Blenheim EquiSports circuit this summer YOUR NEWS YOUR SPORT YOUR BUSINESS 69

Dream Catcher Gary Henley The Bend Years By Mary Arnstad Gentle Readers We all know there are magical and mysterious moments when horses and humans connect Wherever the horses are is home to many of us so it is fitting that the long and fascinating life of a master horseman came to an end in Bend Oregon for Gary Henley on January 25 2017 Born in Warm Springs Oregon on August 20 1935 Gary Clinton Henley never let go of his Native American heritage It braided through all he was as a man and all that he did with horses and riders for decades in the western regions of both the United States and Canada Known by several generations as a top competitive rider trainer teacher breeder finder and developer of horses there was always a deep instinct and informed intuition almost mystical in all he did Here are some stories from those who knew him well Gary always looked closely at a horse s eye for the Look of Eagles This was a constant refrain This was how he found horses or perhaps how horses found him One time we were driving along together in the countryside of western Canada and he suddenly pulled off the road and said Look at that horse out in the field He has the look of eagles He went and talked to the farmer and bought the horse on the spot Linda Chooch Beaupre Wohlers While Gary Henley was easily the top rider in the Pacific Northwest and Western Canada during his competitive life he was also the best collector of young horses who went on to successful careers in hunters jumpers and international level jumping when sold to others Gary was also successful during the period of change from the old format of counting ticks or rubs and shorter distances to the international format we have today Not all top professionals were able to make that adjustment Gary was also one of the first in the Northwest to study blood lines to get an edge on identifying some of his prospects Thoroughbreds were what was available at the time and he had more than his share at the top levels As warm blood breeds came into the mix he once again adjusted and came up with some top performers Gary was a special horseman not only as a rider but also the developer of young horses I can t think of anyone who did it better Kevin Freeman My good friend Mrs Gene Tish Lewis shared an interesting perspective with me on the couple s long friendship with 74 Gary Henley When Gary was at Skyline Stables in Everett Washington he was kind enough to let Gene and Tish live with him and work out of his facility Gene was consulting on the original Thunderbird facility at the time This goes way way back but the memory of his generosity stayed with them all these years and is typical of Gary Henley Weylin Meyer Gary certainly has had a lot of influences on me but I think one of the biggest ones was just to never give up or give up on a horse keep trying and no matter what get to the other side Also he had so much feel for a horse and what they needed or didn t need from a rider He would read their ears and their body language and how they reacted to certain amounts of pressure from your leg or your hand He would spend hours in lessons with me saying do you feel that or did you notice that how they reacted It was so subtle and somewhat intuitive but he was a master of it I feel like I learned so much of what I now do on all kinds of different horses especially sales horses and how to understand them quickly to make them their best Josette Wohlers Johnson Gary Henley was a horseman in the true sense He cared very little about the social aspects of the sport and even less about personal notoriety He cared solely about the horse and the rider in the purest way to make them believe and have confidence that they can do it He gave courage to both green horses and green riders If one of my junior riders was daunted by the height or width of a jump Gary would say Go Get It or to the uncertain rider s declaration that we have never done this before and I m not sure I can do it he would answer We are about to find out Another Henleyism was This is your lucky day You are going to the top He was known to give secret Sunday lessons at my program at Capstone Gary was the reason I moved to Bend and he was part of the team at our barn for his last ten years I will always be grateful to him He also created a wonderful group of junior riders in my program who will carry his legacy of teaching and training wisdom forward He inspired us all Lindsey Paton Garner YOUR NEWS YOUR SPORT YOUR BUSINESS July 2017

One of the reasons Spring has zipped by so quickly is because I am consumed by organizing EIHT for all of May The usual stress was replaced with satisfaction this year I am feeling like the event was smoother than other years but I cannot exactly say why It might be because I have great people placed in the right jobs for about 5 years now and everyone does their part to make the event a success One of the new members to our group was Allyson Greene as our Safety Officer She had a file full of the correct documents laminated bits of information for both show management as well as EMS I have such incredible faith in her because not only does she understand the medical side of the job but she is also a fantastic event rider who knows her way around a successful event I look forward to working with her in the future Heather Andreini and Brenna Nordstom riding a Freestyle Pas de Deux Driving Report By Sarah Johnson With summer in full swing we turn our attention to our next event the Equestrians Institute Combined Driving Event This is a 3 day CDE that is recognized by the American Driving Society ADS and the only event of its kind left in Washington State This year we welcome Debbie Banfield as our head judge as well as Jane Merritt and Mary Anne Boyden New for us this year we are excited to have Erika Matulich as our Technical Delegate picture that person that never stops moving during an event this will be her We are also excited to have a special visit from the Executive Director of the ADS Louise Rothery who has come to see what this West Coast hubbub is all about Many thanks to Robert Griswold our course designer who has already put and will still be putting many hours into getting the courses in tip top shape for our event We are very pleased and humbled that this event has filled to capacity almost as quickly as our May event With other Driving events cancelling in other areas of the country due to low turnout I find myself repeatedly amazed and so very proud to be a part of such a vibrant and involved Driving community here in the Pacific Northwest Find out more about this event at einw org and follow us on Facebook at EI Driving and on Instagram eidriving Eventing Report By Meika Decher Spring has sprung and is so quickly heading into summer I cannot believe how fast the season moves sometimes This winter seemed to droll on forever and now I m regretting how quickly July is here 82 I want to thank everyone who volunteered that weekend and used the new Volunteer Incentive Program that USEA has unveiled I would love feedback about the signup website but from my side I think it is a great addition to help make USEA friendly to all forms of participants Riders and owners often get acknowledgements and it is high time that volunteers get the same rewards for their hours logged I look forward to seeing everyone out having fun in the heat but don t be like me and complain about it when it gets above 78 degrees Remind me of how dark and wet the winter was Sport Horse Breeding Report By Laurie McLaughlin IT s TIME check out the prize list and start making plans to join us for the Sport Horse Breeders Classic I II and the Regional Championships August 26 27 Northwest Sport Horse Breeders Classic I II 2 shows plus Regional Championships Judges Saturday Show J Ashton Jeff Moore San Juan Bautista CA R DSHB Sunday Show Renee Johnson Clovis CA r DSHB Championships on Sunday both of the above Show Manager and Secretary Kaye Phaneuf Sponsorships Silent Auction and Volunteer Organizer Chris Bredeson To celebrate the year of your successes we will be hosting an EVENT on Saturday afternoon following completion of the show day Join us for Wine Cheese a Silent Auction and the 2016 Annual Awards As you all know it takes a lot of sponsors and volunteers to make these shows run well both from a financial and operations perspective There is a sponsorship packet posted on the Sport Horse page on the EI website Take a look but in addition to financial sponsorship we welcome any contribution for the Silent Auction For our mutual success we need your help and sponsorship Please let us know your interest to support in any of the following ways by contacting Chris einw org www O regonD ressage com July 2017

Hunting Season 2016 17 loaded up 13 hounds and headed for Tejon pronounced Teehone CA to attend the first Western States Hound Show in several years The Woodbrook excursion was born of the idea that we would learn a lot about showing hounds and get a chance to connect with many of the other hunts on the west coast As it turns out WHC had a secret weapon By Jt MFH Tami Masters It begins in the fall a great time of year where summer still lingers and skies stay more clear We shake down we breakdown we try some new stuff We ride out and practice have we done enough Our Trials for the hunters kick our season off Let s see if the members have the right quaff The seniors the juniors the teams and the pairs crack the whip in the field hunters if anyone dares And the club wishes to thank it s hardworking hunt staff without whom this wouldn t all be possible first of all Huntsman Jenn Hansen and Kennel madam Sarah Glaser and also whippers in Sr MFH Michael Wager Jt MFH Tami Masters Cathy Elledge Patty Stiemert Margo Forstrom and Sarah Glaser Also thanks to the wonderful Fieldmaster leader teams including First Flight fieldmaster Emily Rang Second Flight fieldmasters Debbie Flynn Tabitha Handly and Jacqueline Fritz Hilltop Fieldmasters Michelle Hoedeman MFH Melody Fleckenstein and Sr Advisory MFH RJ Argenzio West and Junior Fieldmaster Aubrey Roth And our hunting wouldn t be possible without our fox and fox support team Eric Stiemert and Simon Chapman have provided not only the hunt but also the hounds terrific sport all season with their stealthy laying of scent on foot to mimic that of a live fox or coyote Eric is a jack of all trades for the hunt as he can fieldmaster whip or lay drag when called on Simon is from Britain and used to be the drag foot runner for a pack of bloodhounds They are joined on hunts by Jennifer Hansen s mom Janie Hansen and Aleta Sewell who transport the foxes provide first aid when necessary and maneuver photographers for the best shots during the hunts Thanks to all from a very grateful hunt The hounds arrived at 2am Friday morning and fared the trip well Our hosts for this event were Hillary and Tyce Mothershed who are Whipper In and Huntsman for the Tejon Hounds Our hosts invited all attendees to a welcome party on Friday night and the evening s conversation focused more on hunting and less about showing hounds The first hunt of the season with a mix of a field old hunters new hunters energetic even keeled What s this we discover on our way to seven A new gate has been added Oh this is just Heaven Our season progresses through rain and the cold Confidence is gained and riders get bold Hounds and the foxes get faster and stronger The field takes shape riding longer and longer 8am Saturday morning started with the American Hounds Since we had no American hounds we watched and learned The first class for WHC was the Crossbred Unentered Dogs AKA the Puppy Class We had three entries Index Isaid and Iggy Iggy showed the best of the three and placed 2nd in the class Many stories are told at the end of the day My favorite by far is when I heard someone say I checked him I squeezed him I gave him a boot then we cleared that log which I m sure was four foot I have stories of my own some tied with emotion All of them different like tides on the ocean but no feeling can match the whipper in blues the lonely ride home on a horse with three shoes The next class for WHC was the Crossbred Entered Dogs this class had the most entries of any class that day All hunts are fun and that s just the thing After all the hounds had been looked I come alive then when I hear the hounds sing over and placed in order of the judge s There re new voices to hear from the hounds preference on the boards Woodbrook that we drafted Kent was plucked from the sideline and some high some low but all pleasantly crafted sent to the front of the line to win the Their chorus makes me come alive with anticipation class A total surprise to all especially Now time marches on and the seasons a changing when he came back to win Best in Show Time to get on the tractor and do brush hog rearranging later in the day Woodbrook Hunt Club brings Woodbrook Hunt Club Activities home the win at the Western States During the summer hounds walk out or Hound Show trail ride Tuesday Friday and Saturday Please contact Jennifer Hansen to confirm time and location huntsmanhansen gmail com or 253 377 4892 On the 18th of May Huntsman Jennifer Hansen and Whipper In Patty Stiemert Do you have a group of
