S how season do you love it or hate it If you re a seasoned competitor you probably look forward to showing off your horse s abilities and have learned to thrive under pressure If you re new to competing returning to it after time off or have a less than seasoned show horse you may find yourself entering classes with a sense of dread If showing makes you uncomfortable you re probably dealing with show nerves Join the club We spoke with dressage trainer Heather Oleson about the strategies she uses to help students of all ages and ability levels deal with show ring anxiety Her practical approach can help you be more successful and relaxed in the show ring So even if you re not always in the ribbons you can starting having more fun as you hone your skills The Work Begins at Home The first thing that any competitor needs to do is to become comfortable with being uncomfortable at home Heather said I see far too many dressage riders who want everything quiet and perfect at home then come unglued in a show environment A common example is the rider who doesn t like to ride with other horses in the arena The fact is if you want to show you ll have to be able to deal with lots of things outside your normal comfort zone If you face your issues at home you ll have better coping skills and have fewer things to deal with on show day Being at a busy training barn can be a good thing Heather said There s always something going on In a Heather Oleson riding Victor warming up at the San Juan Capistrano CDI in 2014 Photograph by Siggi Wolff September 2015 Flying Changes 33

Congratulations Lisa Eagley Owner and Trainer at GrayStone Stables Equestrian Center USDF Silver Medalist aboard Calderon 25 Lisa is currently accepting new clients for lessons training and boarding A lifetime of dedication to the partnership between horse and human produces harmonious results in every arena whether it be relaxing with a safe horse on the trails or being the best you both can be in competition Lisa finds horses like Calderon 25 for her clients Calderon 25 will be coming up for sale at the end of the 2015 show season www GraystoneStable com Email graystonestables yahoo com Phone 360 668 9722 APRIL AD PLACED www FlyingChanges com July 2015 ACCEPTING NEW FARRIER CLIENTS Over 10 years of experience including work with Dr Mark Revenaugh DVM Apprenticed with Joe McKee Dedicated to ongoing education References available 503 830 9580 Wilsonville Oregon 34 boarding situation you might encounter horses being lunged in the arena several lessons going on simultaneously as well as activity in the barn aisle You need to be able to get your horse to focus even with distractions Heather said You as a rider need to keep working keep your focus and ask your horse to do the same If your horse is distracted at feeding time when someone is dragging the arena next door or unloading hay use this as a training opportunity Ask your horse to keep working and don t allow or make excuses for inattention You want to push yourself beyond your comfort zone while remaining safe At home the budding competitor needs to see these problems as opportunities to become better at coping with the inevitable distractions that will happen at a show Heather said They need to get comfortable riding their horse in an arena with other horses They need to learn to deal with the problems spooking or whatever that happen when the horse is in a new environment Our Northwest shows are relatively tame Heather said describing a competition scenario in San Juan Capistrano where a hunter jumper show is held concurrently with a dressage show There are jumps dogs kids trucks a lot going on To some degree that s really helpful when you go to a more low key environment You feel so much more comfortable Realistic Expectations There are a lot of components to showing that people may not expect or consider Heather said For example trailering to the show unfamiliar stall situations coping with the warm up arena and the isolation of the show ring The more you know before you go the better prepared you ll be Some horses like a busy warm up ring but hate to be alone which can make the transition from warmup to show ring stressful Heather said Observe how your horse reacts and deal with the situation the best you can at home in your training www FlyingChanges com September 2015

Heather Oleson riding Wriley a 5 year old Hanoverian gelding owned by Tina Spencer Photograph by Tami Aufderheide Ride the Test Finally Heather recommends riding complete tests occasionally at home I still run through tests at home before big shows on my upper level horses Heather said Test riding is its own separate skill set that has to be cultivated I find that many riders don t ride enough tests before they go to the show Riding the entire test will help you to gauge how quickly transitions come up and help identify the things you need to work on Do you have to ride really forward on the centerline or make more half halts Heather said How does the horse change after you ve ridden the test a few times and how are you as a rider going to keep the horse on your aids Entering the Show Ring Honestly at a show there s no a whole lot you can do as a trainer Heather said You plan the warm up to get the horse loose and on the aids and get the rider loosened up and focused on riding their horse I m not a big motivational speaker I m more interested September 2015 Realistic expectations are important The training has gone the way it has gone and I always say if you can t do it at home with at least 80 reliability chances are you won t get it whatever it is at the show Given the new environment and added stress of showing don t expect you or your horse to give a better performance than you would at home Much as we all like to win if you can think of your showing experience as a learning opportunity you ll put less pressure on yourself and your horse If you re riding more than one test don t expect to make huge changes at the show based on the judge s comments If you re a professional you may be able to make adjustments between rides If you re an amateur ride the way you ride at home Heather said Don t make big changes at the show And if you ride a pretty good test that has a problem or two Don t drill your horse to death It s a recipe for disaster Heather Oleson riding Victor and I warming up this year at Dressage at Devonwood Photograph by ZoeAnne Arrington Flying Changes 35

Skin Problems Acne Dermatitis Eczema Digestive Disorders Heartburn IBS Constipation Diarrhea WISHING WELLNESS Horsewomen Renew Your Passion To Ride Being in the horse industry for 40 years and 22 years as a Certified Riding Master and Instructor I understand what the physical and mental demands are for riding training and caring for horses whether for show or pleasure Are you just sick and tired of being sick and tired Do you feed your horse better than you feed yourself Do you wish you had the energy your horse has to run fast jump high twist and turn on a dime Is your horse more fluid forward and flexible than you Have you lost your endurance to go the distance Is there more Bling on your tack than in your life Do you keep forgetting tests courses or patterns Are your transitions from the house to the barn sluggish Have your jeans or breeches reached maximum capacity Your knees hips shoulders hurt and you didn t even ride Whatever it is are you WISHING FOR WELLNESS Why a Health Coach A Health Coach is like a Riding Instructor A teacher with valuable training insight and experience who assists you in being successful with each step taken in achieving your end goals For the last 17 years my husband and I have been boarding horses at our facility in Albany Oregon I ve always taken it serious to provide the best nutrition for the boarders and our horses My training and studies included more than one hundred dietary theories a variety of practical lifestyle management and coaching techniques plus innovative coaching methods with some of the world s top health and wellness experts I can t remember how many times I heard someone jokingly say they fed their horses better than themselves I could identify with those comments I can look back now and say I wasn t meeting our nutritional needs as well as I did the horses Have you ever received advice which you were unable to follow Has your doctor ever recommended a lifestyle or food change which you found to be unsustainable Have you ever wanted something in your life but found you couldn t achieve it alone Over the years I read articles about riders and trainers making changes to their nutritional program for their physical and mental needs They were doing meditation yoga jogging and Pilates to continue to do what they loved to ride with ease and confidence like they used to wanted to and needed to stay on top of their game As your Health Coach I will listen carefully and help you to navigate the world of confusing or contradictory nutrition advice to determine what changes are necessary for you When I began suffering chronic health issues I knew I needed to get my health situation straightened out I thought I had most of the pieces of the nutrition puzzle together until I really began to dig in and research it I needed to focus on healing my body with natural food choices and make improvements in my lifestyle and consciousness because it was affecting my life s passion to ride train and teach It just wasn t fun anymore My desire was waning Three years ago I discovered a Naturopathic physician who put the whole picture of the nutrition puzzle together for me Both my husband and I followed his advice Inside of 90 days we had almost miraculous healings with our health issues It wasn t a diet it was a journey a lifestyle change and it was delicious To top it off I lost 40 pounds and gained a renewed passion to ride It was so simple and effective I could hardly contain my excitement As I made observations around me everyone was suffering from at least one chronic health issue I saw a need to help horsewomen discover how important nutrition really is to have a fulfilling life not end up suffering from chronic health issues unable to enjoy the horses they admittedly fed better than themselves A personalized program will radically improve your health and happiness Together you and I will explore concerns specific to you and your body and discover the tools needed for a lifetime of balance My Approach as a Health Coach I practice a holistic approach to health and wellness which means I look at how all areas of your life are connected recognizing how the mental physical emotional and spiritual planes work together making up a whole person With my approach I don t dwell on calories carbs fats and proteins Instead I work with my clients to create a happy healthy life in a way that is flexible fun and rewarding Together we ll work to reach your health goals in areas such as achieving optimal weight reducing food cravings increasing sleep and maximizing energy You ll develop a deeper understanding of the food and lifestyle choices that work best for you and implement lasting changes that will improve your energy balance and health Staying healthy equates to more time in the saddle I entered the Institute of Integrative Nutrition program and received a Health Coach certification to offer my services to the horse industry I knew so well I want you to be as healthy as your horse It s rare for anyone to get an hour to work on their nutrition and goals with a trained professional Is your passion and desire to do what you love to RIDE with ease and confidence Are you lacking the energy vitality and agility to do it like you used to want to or need to Then perhaps I can help you regain it Could one conversation change your life Are you are suffering from some health issue like Arthritis Osteoporosis Bone loss Bone or Joint Pain Shin splints heel spurs Muscle Cramps Spasms Restless Legs Sciatica Coming this fall and open to everybody USDF Instructor Trainer Workshops In the process of learning how to ride most of us will encounter an exceptional teacher able to relate to guide and inspire us A true mentor Somebody with mad skills and the passion to share them To be able to teach somebody else how to ride an entire set of additional skills comes in handy Like people skills And patience A whole lot of patience Knowing how to adjust instruction to match a student s personality and learning style is another key skill And to always emphasize safety How do you make the leap from rider to instructor Are your own experiences enough to draw from In Europe riders rarely make the leap to instructor without intense training Before they begin to teach Europeans must go through rigorous coursework spend time as an apprentice and pass a certification exam Our approach is the complete opposite anyone at anytime can put up a sign and start teaching United States Dressage Federation USDF offers certification for dressage instructors but it is not mandatory Only four of the 116 instructors who are members of Oregon Dressage Society ODS are USDF certified Why is that Certification can be a long and costly process Many riders get into teaching as an additional source of income and the cost of certification is not trivial especially when you factor in lost revenue in addition to fees No doubt certification is beneficial to the dressage community as a whole but not if time and costs deter participation How about a happy medium 42 Photo by Michele Dodge USDF has designed a series of workshops to offer mentorship to aspiring and practicing instructors Participants will improve their theoretical knowledge and practical skills under the guidance of a USDF faculty member They also have the rare opportunity to collaborate with seven other participants from differing backgrounds and to learn from each other s approaches ODS to host the 2015 16 workshops Nov 14 15 Jan 9 10 and Feb 27 28 The USDF faculty member conducting the workshops is Heidi Chote a USDF Certified Trainer Instructor through Fourth Level a USDF Gold Silver and Bronze Medalist all medals earned on self made horses and a USDF L Graduate www firstchancefarm com Heidi wants to emphasize that this is not a learn how to pass the test program although the basic requirements for the training first level exam will be covered The cost to reserve your space is 100 Thanks to a generous donation from the Dressage Foundation and Summerfield Farms the total cost for all three workshops has been reduced to 1050 that is 175 per day ODS is still looking for sponsors to further reduce the cost to participants To register go to ODS s website www oregondressage com For more information contact Lisa Koch Lisakoch3 gmail com or USDF instructorcertification usdf org www FlyingChanges com September 2015

Saddle Fit What can we learn from sweat marks By Jochen Schleese CMS CSFT CSE One of the most misunderstood indicators of saddle fit good or bad are the sweat marks left behind after a ride and when the pad has been removed Logic dictates that the dust pattern on your pad and the sweat marks on your horse should ideally look somewhat like the photos attached The most dirt is accumulated where the most movement is in the front shoulder moving back and forth and in the back where the back moves up and down The quick explanation is that no dirt should show where the saddle hardly touches such as the gullet or at the transition between sweat flap and panel The white triangle under the front part of the saddle also indicates a good position and fit because in this area the saddle should sit the most quietly without movement since this is where most of your weight sits i e no dirt accumulation and no movement In nature the horse carries the most weight on the forehand 60 and if the rider mounts the horse this increases to about 75 The reason why we want this white triangle in the saddle pad it indicates that all effort has been made to free up the front and the back of the saddle so the horse can bring up its back engaging the hindquarters The first step for the horse to shift the weight from the forehand to the back hand is to have this ability to bring up his back Only then can he pivot his pelvis and step under with the hindquarters By doing so the horse is able to shift the weight from the forehand to the hindquarters come up in front of the shoulder and move freer and jump higher Most of the movement on the saddle pad should show at the shoulder front and at the back not under the triangle Horses do sweat just like humans in order to regulate their body temperature The horse s back actually has only a few sweat glands most of them are found along his sides at the neck or flank areas that have a broad and open surface to allow the natural influence of air and wind to cool the body with the help of sweat This is why the large saddle flaps the bottom flap when there are two the monoflap when there is one are called sweat flaps Let s use the analogy of comparing the saddle pad to a white dress shirt Whether the dress shirt fits or not is too small too tight by a couple of sizes the most dirt will still accumulate at the neck where most of the dust from the outer environment the pressure or touch from the skin to the shirt occur The least amount of visible dirt will be where the shirt is pressed snugly against the Most of the dirt occurs where there is the most access to air circulation and friction Here is an excellent dust pattern on a saddle pad from a correctly fitted saddle 58 www FlyingChanges com September 2015

body With the saddle being the snuggest fit under the Europe people don t even use saddle pads The comfort tree points and the stirrup bar same as the dress shirt for the animal is in the properly fitted saddle panel on the shoulders of a human body this is where the not in the pad on an English saddle In the Western least amount of dust from the outer environment will saddle on the other hand where the tree is straighter accumulate here is where the least amount of friction and larger and there is no protection only a thin due to movement between skin fur and material will fleece is nailed to the bottom so that the navajo pad occur Large kidney shaped 6 8 long dry spots are doesn t slide around This pad is the horse s padding acceptable under the stirrup bar but dry spots found on a larger straighter and more weight bearing tree on the saddle support area with a circumference of With today s technology computerized saddle pads approximately one inch actually indicate points of fibreoptic cameras injected into the horse s muscle concentrated pressure from lumpy flocking under the saddle during riding xrays of spine from Most English saddle trees have a slight curvature on the bottom through the horse s rectum we have a the bottom of the tree slight rock to allow the saddle much better picture of fact not theories based on manufacturer to put more panel flocking underneath the cantle and the treepoint stirrup bar area to give the horse the maximum cushioning in these areas The challenge of the saddle fitter and the saddle owner is to create the right amount of tree width to inhibit a large amount of Your Pacific Northwest Equine Farm Resource Specialists rock which irritates the horse can Farm Training Instruction Clubs Associations cause hair loss or misinterpret aids due to too much movement between Equine Mortality Major Medical Events saddle and rider Certainly we could go with an extremely wide tree and overpadding with additional saddle pads but how many athletes do you know that would wear a large amount of underpants or many pairs of socks in their skates or running shoes in order to accommodate a proper fit in too large pants or foot wear Why do top riders in all English disciplines prefer not to use this proposed solution of extra wide trees with extra padding if this is the ultimate answer It would make life ever so much simpler for the saddle fitter saddle manufacturer trainer rider horse etc Logic dictates that if this were truly the solution the whole industry would follow this current fad but the truth is that the preference is to get horse and rider as close as possible to each other using the saddle as the interface to allow maximum communication and aids without impeding performance capability and creating long term damage The Access competitive quotes at saddle pad should be used only for 1 800 JOG TROT what it was intended to do to protect heather lindsey leavitt com the leather from the horse s sweat on an English saddle In some parts of Leavitt Equine Insurance

Sweat marks occur in areas where there is friction and air circulation opinions Saddle fit is now truly now a mixture of art and science Dust patterns as indicators of saddle fit are still somewhat arbitrary and unreliable since there are too many variables influencing interpretation movement of the saddle pad if the saddle is too big saddle pad can slip be incorrectly seamed etc It is still best to have a qualified fitter out to assess what is actually going on 2015 Saddlefit 4 Life All Rights Reserved BIG SKY SHAVINGS ECO PURE CHOICE PREMIUM DUST FREE AND ABSORBENT CALL US 406 288 3000 INFO BIGSKYSHAVINGS COM WWW BIGSKYSHAVINGS COM 60 www FlyingChanges com September 2015

Keep Your Horse in Fighting Shape As Winter Approaches A summer full of fun filled adventures and competitions with your horse is what we as horse owners crave Warm evenings shared with our equine counterparts are why we have such a passion for our sport In order to perform at their highest levels our horses must have optimal body conditions and be in excellent shape However we must ask ourselves a couple of questions Has all of the practice and hauling taken a toll on our horses body conditions Have our horses dropped a little weight with the stresses of being top athletes essentially making them hardkeepers Some horses need a little extra help in order to stay in their best fighting shape With an increased work level the first thing to do is to make sure that your horse is receiving high quality forage and a concentrate that provides enough energy to keep it in a proper body condition It seems that hard keepers are typically more nervous than easy keepers are In these horses it is important that you provide a concentrate that is high in protein and fat rather than carbohydrates Protein and fat are considered cool energy and thus will help to avoid making a high energy horse hot in the way that grain based products 64 that are high in carbohydrates would Extruded soybeans are an excellent source of high protein and fat Some horses benefit from being given a supplement aimed at weight gain which simply involves adding protein and fat to the horse s diet However in many horses energy is not the only reason why they cannot remain at an ideal body condition Nutrition is the basis of health in all living organisms Horses with less than ideal body conditions have a tendency to be deficient in one or more vitamins and or minerals making them susceptible to disease and stress A vitamin that is particularly sensitive to the body condition is vitamin E Vitamin E works synergistically with selenium to serve as antioxidants in the body aid in muscle function and recovery and increase immune function It is a fat soluble vitamin and can only be stored in fat in the body If your horse does not have adequate fat stores he in turn cannot store adequate amounts of vitamin E In addition as hay is stored vitamin E is oxidized thus becoming unavailable to the horse After six months of storage up to 80 of the vitamin E in hay is lost If your horse is consuming hay that has been stored for a while and is on the thin side your horse will most likely www FlyingChanges com September 2015

become vitamin E deficient Therefore it is very important that your horse receives a vitamin and mineral supplement to ensure that all of his nutritional requirements are being met Another reason horses cannot keep weight on is digestive issues You may notice that your horse has a great appetite and is consuming more energy than any other horse at your barn but is still not putting on weight The reasoning for this could be that his gastrointestinal flora is not optimal With less than ideal gut flora he can consume a lot of energy but not be receiving the benefits This is because he is unable to digest the feedstuffs and put the energy to use in his body Providing probiotics prebiotics and live yeast cultures will help to optimize your horse s gastrointestinal flora Probiotics are an inoculation of live bacteria that help to stabilize the gastrointestinal tract and help to fend off disease causing microorganisms Prebiotics are nutrients that beneficially nourish and promote the growth of good microorganisms in the gastrointestinal tract Human research has shown that people who consume prebiotics have fewer issues with anxiety depression and stress In a horse live yeast cultures help to stabilize the cecum s pH levels which further stabilizes the gastrointestinal tract Research has shown that horses that are fed live yeast cultures have increased the digestibility of feedstuffs consumed and have improved nutritional status as compared to horses not consuming live yeast cultures vicious cycle because if your horse does not have adequate stores of fat to protect himself from the cold he will shiver which burns more energy and thus can make him even skinnier It is very important that we do all we can so that our horses have adequate fat stores before winter to ensure that this does not occur Whether you are trying to keep weight on your performance horse during the competitive season or are trying to put weight on one before winter hits consider your feeding program Do not merely put a high protein and high fat product into your horse and expect results Address all issues associated with horses that struggle to maintain their weight Make sure that your hard keeper is receiving a complete vitamin and mineral supplement prebiotics probiotics and live yeast cultures in addition to a high protein and high fat diet Taking care of all of these issues in your thin horse should help to ensure that your horse can reach and maintain an optimal body condition year round Nestled in the Oregon Mountains Not only do we want our hard keepers to hold weight during the competitive season but also many times we need to ensure that they are in their optimal body conditions before winter hits As the weather gets colder thinner horses do not have the fat stores in their bodies to insulate themselves from the cold Horses are much like humans The skinny person is always colder than the hefty person because the skinny person does not have the fat stores to keep himself warm like the hefty person does However humans can easily temperature regulate by putting on a warm jacket to combat the cold and then removing the jacket if they get too warm Horses do not have that luxury This can create a September 2015 1 289 000 Nestled in the Oregon Mountains 53 98 gated private acres Waterfall ponds pastures mountains and wildlife Great horse facility w 8 stall barn large feed tack rooms large arena fenced pastures and miles of trails right from the property Elegant and inviting home w 2 master suites gourmet kitchen custom cabinetry Italian tile and handcrafted wood 3 fireplaces and much more Guest suite above the 3 car garage Additional home site approved on its own tax lot Colby Kielman Broker Licensed in the state of Oregon 800 772 7284 www orop com Flying Changes 65

that is peering out of a stall and nickering for attention because we want to keep those horses safe and because we don t want to be the vector that delivers any illness to them Dressage Report Gunn Cooper This month I am going to feature one of the Trainers Challenge winners Bryan Beymer I have known Bryan for over 25 years but only started taking lessons from him two years ago He is by far the best trainer I have ever ridden with and the only one who has been able to explain and show me what it means to ride with your seat Bryan studied the art of classical dressage for twelve years working with local trainers such as Linda Jones from Ashland Oregon Dietrich von Hoppfgarten Nancy Thatcher and lastly J Ashton Moore from California He started his training business in 1992 and now specializes in teaching beginners and children He also loves to help adult riders figure out the puzzle of how to communicate with their horse He currently teaches at Gold Creek Equestrian Center in Woodinville and Star Valley Farm in Redmond but he also meets some of his students at their home barn or Kathryn Taylor Park Bryan feels that his biggest influence has been J Ashton Moore who s most influential teacher was Hans von Blixen a Swedish Olympic rider and last director of the Swedish Cavalry School Bryan had gotten very frustrated with the modern dressage idea of hold and drive which only works so far but does not allow you to progress to higher levels of dressage At the time Mr Moore was the only teacher talking about creating collection and lightness through correct biomechanics From him he also discovered how horses learn They actually don t know what we mean by all the different aids we subject them to but have to guess When they guess right we should praise and reward them When they guess wrong they should not be punished but just asked to guess again Classical dressage consists of a very simple system of installing basic building blocks or correct biomechanical movements The system is simple but it can take a life time to learn We must also learn to be patient and avoid taking shortcuts Eventing Report Meika Decher Fall eventing season It sounds awfully good at this moment while we currently bake like cookies this HOT summer This fall you can extend your eventing experience along I 90 and get the EI One Day event at WSHP then Stanton Farms HT and finally the new Spokane Sporthorse HT in October Personally I am excited to think that we can grow our season There are always those horses who miss out on two events mid season for some silly reason and then poof you are done and packing up for the winter Now those horses get a chance to still get some qualifications and experience in the 2015 year I like the idea of working hard through October with my horses and giving them November off Now we have a fall season to look forward to and 2016 won t feel so far away See you at the One Day on September 26th Bryan doing a training ride at Star Valley Farm Bryan teaching student at Kathryn Taylor Park September 2015 Flying Changes 71
