OSPHOS clodronate injection Bisphosphonate For use in horses only Brief Summary For Full Prescribing Information see package insert CAUTION Federal USA law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian DESCRIPTION Clodronate disodium is a non amino chlorocontaining bisphosphonate Chemically clodronate disodium is dichloromethylene diphosphonic acid disodium salt and is manufactured from the tetrahydrate form INDICATION For the control of clinical signs associated with navicular syndrome in horses CONTRAINDICATIONS Horses with hypersensitivity to clodronate disodium should not receive OSPHOS WARNINGS Do not use in horses intended for human consumption HUMAN WARNINGS Not for human use Keep this and all drugs out of the reach of children Consult a physician in case of accidental human exposure PRECAUTIONS As a class bisphosphonates may be associated with gastrointestinal and renal toxicity Sensitivity to drug associated adverse reactions varies with the individual patient Renal and gastrointestinal adverse reactions may be associated with plasma concentrations of the drug Bisphosphonates are excreted by the kidney therefore conditions causing renal impairment may increase plasma bisphosphonate concentrations resulting in an increased risk for adverse reactions Concurrent administration of other potentially nephrotoxic drugs should be approached with caution and renal function should be monitored Use of bisphosphonates in patients with conditions or diseases affecting renal function is not recommended Administration of bisphosphonates has been associated with abdominal pain colic discomfort and agitation in horses Clinical signs usually occur shortly after drug administration and may be associated with alterations in intestinal motility In horses treated with OSPHOS these clinical signs usually began within 2 hours of treatment Horses should be monitored for at least 2 hours following administration of OSPHOS Easily Administered OSPHOS controls the clinical signs associated with Navicular Syndrome via intramuscular injection Well Tolerated in clinical trials Proven Efficacy at 6 months post treatment No Reconstitution Required Learn more online www dechra us com www osphos com As with all drugs side effects may occur In field studies the most common side effects reported were signs of discomfort or nervousness colic and or pawing OSPHOS should not be used in pregnant or lactating mares or mares intended for breeding Use of OSPHOS in patients with conditions affecting renal function or mineral or electrolyte homeostasis is not recommended Refer to the prescribing information for complete details or visit www dechra us com or call 866 933 2472 CAUTION Federal law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of licensed veterinarian Freedom of Information Summary Original New Animal Drug Application NADA 141 427 for OSPHOS April 28 2014 Dechra Veterinary Products US and the Dechra D logo are registered trademarks of Dechra Pharmaceuticals PLC 2016 Dechra Ltd Bisphosphonates affect plasma concentrations of some minerals and electrolytes such as calcium magnesium and potassium immediately post treatment with effects lasting up to several hours Caution should be used when administering bisphosphonates to horses with conditions affecting mineral or electrolyte homeostasis e g hyperkalemic periodic paralysis hypocalcemia etc The safe use of OSPHOS has not been evaluated in horses less than 4 years of age The effect of bisphosphonates on the skeleton of growing horses has not been studied however bisphosphonates inhibit osteoclast activity which impacts bone turnover and may affect bone growth Bisphosphonates should not be used in pregnant or lactating mares or mares intended for breeding The safe use of OSPHOS has not been evaluated in breeding horses or pregnant or lactating mares Bisphosphonates are incorporated into the bone matrix from where they are gradually released over periods of months to years The extent of bisphosphonate incorporation into adult bone and hence the amount available for release back into the systemic circulation is directly related to the total dose and duration of bisphosphonate use Bisphosphonates have been shown to cause fetal developmental abnormalities in laboratory animals The uptake of bisphosphonates into fetal bone may be greater than into maternal bone creating a possible risk for skeletal or other abnormalities in the fetus Many drugs including bisphosphonates may be excreted in milk and may be absorbed by nursing animals Increased bone fragility has been observed in animals treated with bisphosphonates at high doses or for long periods of time Bisphosphonates inhibit bone resorption and decrease bone turnover which may lead to an inability to repair micro damage within the bone In humans atypical femur fractures have been reported in patients on long term bisphosphonate therapy however a causal relationship has not been established ADVERSE REACTIONS The most common adverse reactions reported in the field study were clinical signs of discomfort or nervousness colic and or pawing Other signs reported were lip licking yawning head shaking injection site swelling and hives pruritus Distributed by Dechra Veterinary Products 7015 College Boulevard Suite 525 Overland Park KS 66211 866 Nayel Nassar Lordan ESI Photography S unday was filled with excitement contagious smiles and weather that was just shy of perfect as the crowds filled the stands to watch the sixth annual AIG 1 Million Grand Prix an event that only happens once a year where show jumping s most talented horses and riders join us from across the country and around the world for a shot in winning the lion s share of prize money HITS welcomed in Mark McGowan from Kilmarnock Scotland to design his first Million Dollar Course for HITS I was happy with the spread of faults throughout the first round and absolutely elated with the result said McGowan To get six clear rounds and have an absolutely fantastic jump off where the last one to go wins is the coolest thing ever A carefully planned jump off ride would be required in order to capture the blue ribbon in the AIG Million with six coming back to compete for top honors Only two riders would turn in clear jump off rounds The dynamic duo that took home the blue ribbon cooler and trophy was Nayel Nassar of Encinitas California aboard his own Lordan Last to go in the jump off and topping a field of 51 riding home in a time of 44 418 Nassar and Lordan secured their second HITS Million win to go along with their 2013 victory in the Saugerties 1 Million Grand Prix in Saugerties New York During the post competition press conference Nassar discussed that as Lordan is getting older the Hanoverian gelding is now 14 he is trying to compete him more sparingly The first show of the year for Lordan was here at the HITS Desert Horse Park when the team took home top honors in the 100 000 Longines FEI World Cup Jumping Thermal CSI3 W and that was the last show for him up until this week Just as Nassar said after the World Cup He is just such a trier and he is small but the jumps never feel small on him We just want to take care of him as best we can Nassar said We have an incredible partnership and at this point we go in the ring and it s almost like we don t have to think anymore Right Nayel Nassar Lordan ESI Photography 12 TCE ________________ TheCompetitiveEquestrian May June 2018

2 MADDEN CLINCHES HER SECOND TITLE IN A CLIFFHANGER by Louise Parkes A merica s Beezie Madden 54 held on to win the Longines FEI World Cup Jumping 2018 title in Paris FRA but she didn t do it the easy way In a cliffhanger of a second round she faulted for the first time over three tough days of jumping when last to go with the brilliant Breitling LS And the crowd had to hold their breath until she crossed the line to a roar of approval separated by just two penalty points from compatriot Devin Ryan 36 in second place 1 Elizabeth Madden of USA with her winner s trophy on the podium during the awards ceremony as she wins the FEI Longines World Cup Jumping Finals in Paris France 15 April 2018 FEI Jim Hollander 2 Longines FEI World Cup Jumping Final Paris Sunday Fourth placed on Sunday Overall winner Elizabeth Madden USA riding Breitling LS FEI Liz Gregg 3 Elizabeth Madden of USA C with her winner s trophy stands on the podium with Devin Ryan L of USA who won second place and Henrik von Eckermann R of Sweden who took third place in the FEI Longines World Cup Jumping Finals in Paris France 15 April 2018 FEI Jim Hollander 4 Elizabeth Madden shares a moment with Breitling LS FEI Liz Gregg The biggest surprise package of the week the relatively unknown Ryan was relentlessly cool yet again as his apparently bomb proof grey gelding son of the great stallion Zirocco Blue continued to make the super tough courses designed by Spain s Santiago Varela look fairly elementary The hard luck story of the final afternoon was that of Sweden s Henrik von Eckermann 37 who had to settle for third place for the second year in a row In runner up spot and carrying four faults as the afternoon began he might have forced Madden into a jump off but for a mistake with Tovek s Mary Lou in the closing moments This evening he wasn t forgiving himself for that Madden knew she d been in a fight When I had that rail down I was a little nervous but I still felt my horse was jumping well and I knew I had to pull it together to finish on four faults and try to get it done she said The rider who previously claimed the title in 2013 said it was double exciting to post her second win and particularly with this 12 year old stallion We ve really believed in him but he s taken time to mature so for him to May June 2018 3 TCE ________________ TheCompetitiveEquestrian 33

Devin Ryan USA Eddie Blue FEI Christophe Tani re Elizabeth Madden Breitling LS FEI Liz Gregg come through today is fantastic It s taken a little while to replace Simon her 2013 World Cup winning ride and Cortes team silver 2016 Olympic Games but it s happening she added Her two nearest rivals kept all the pressure in place when making no mistake in today s first round von Eckermann carrying his four points forward and Ryan still sitting on a total of six A little rattle at the oxer at fence three on the 13 obstacle course and another at vertical no 7 set American hearts beating a little faster but Madden cleared the line with nothing to add so the top end of the standings looked the same when the top 20 returned for round two over a new track And Ryan who hails from Long Valley in New Jersey did it again steering Eddie Blue home with apparent ease once more At just nine years old the horse was the youngest in the Final but you d never have guessed His brain is unbelievable he never knocked a pole as a five or six year old he won the American Gold Cup as an eight year old and was second at Devon one of our biggest shows in the US he s just a fantastic horse said the man who qualified from the US East Coast series Second last into the ring von Eckermann knew he would pressure Madden with a clear and this evening he was beating himself up about having the second fence down this time out It was my mistake my horse jumped fantastic as always but we got too close and I interfered I should have trusted her quality and it wouldn t have happened said the clearly disappointed Swede Henrik von Eckermann Toveks Mary Lou FEI Liz Gregg You could hear a pin drop after Madden s stallion hit the middle element of the triple combination at fence six Another error would hand the title to fellowAmerican Ryan but the lady who has two Olympic gold medals in her trophy cabinet along with a whole lot more valuable hardware didn t crumble bringing Breitling home with nothing further to add for a very popular victory Only five female athletes have taken the title in the 40 year history of the series that every rider wants to win and they all have one thing in common Like today s Longines FEI World Cup Jumping champion Melanie Smith 1983 Leslie Burr Lenehan 1986 and Katharine Burdsall 1987 all flew the American flag while three time winner Meredith Michaels Beerbaum from Germany 2005 2008 2009 was born in Los Angeles California It seemed history was repeating itself as Burdsall s victory was also posted at exactly the same Paris venue when the Jumping Final was last staged in France 31 years ago The final standings showed three US riders in the top four places as 2017 winner McLain Ward slotted into fourth spot The happiest of all was new doublechampion Madden I love the World Cup Final each year I make it a goal to get there and to win and I did it again said the lady who will be aiming join the elite club of three time champions when the Final returns to Gothenburg in Sweden for the 23rd time next April 34 TCE ________________ TheCompetitiveEquestrian Elizabeth Madden of USA C with her winner s trophy stands on the podium with Devin Ryan L of USA who won second place and Henrik von Eckermann R of Sweden who took third place in the FEI Longines World Cup Jumping Finals in Paris France 15 April 2018 FEI Jim Hollander May June 2018

1 2 I n a dramatic conclusion to an extraordinary battle between two mighty forces Germany s Isabell Werth posted a backto back victory at the FEI World Cup Dressage Final 2018 in Paris France today America s Laura Graves and Verdades put all the pressure on the defending champion when pinning her into runner up spot in the Grand Prix so in this deciding Freestyle Werth had it all to do to put that behind her and come back out fighting But with her trademark steely determination the phenomenal athlete produced a pristine performance to see off the challenge and lift the coveted trophy for the fourth time in her incredible career It was right down to the wire however and she knew that the slightest error was out of the question when second last to go Graves had already posted a massive score of 89 082 which the US rider admitted surprised even her I knew anything was possible I knew it would take a score like that to possibly get a win and it was a huge personal best for me Graves said 1 Isabell Werth and Weihegold OLD FEI Liz Gregg 2 Jessica von Bredow Werndl GER Unee BB FEI Liz Gregg 3 Podium left to right Second Laura Graves USA winner Isabell Werth GER third placed Jessica von Bredow Werndl GER FEI Christophe Tani re 4 FEI World Cup Dressage Final Paris Saturday winner Isabell Werth GER riding Weihegold OLD and dancing is third placed Jessica von Bredow Werndl GER FEI Christophe Tani re However Werth mustered up all the skill and experience of a lifetime to squeeze her rival out of pole position with the winning mark of 90 657 She described yesterday s Grand Prix defeat as motivating and simply used it to spur herself on to better things with the help of team coach and manager Monica Theodorescu Like I said yesterday I was not really disappointed or sad I was just thinking about how I had to prepare for today and how I had to make it better and analyse what went wrong So Monica and me we decided to go in the big warm up arena today to bring her Weihegold forward and to make her free again and that worked and today she was the horse I wanted to show yesterday This is life a lot of people think it s easy you win and you win again but it s not like that You have to think about it all the time and keep listening to your horse Yesterday was not our day but today we could solve it And this is what I really like to do and that s the reason why I love to compete And today s result was another reminder of the continuing resurgence of the German Dressage powerhouse with Werth s compatriots Jessica von BredowWerndl Unee BB and Dorothee Schneider Sammy Davis Jr slotting 36 TCE ________________ TheCompetitiveEquestrian May June 2018

Isabell Werth Weihegold OLD after they finish their Freestyle FEI Jim Hollander C H M Laura Graves Verdades FEI Liz Gregg into third and fifth places Von Bredow Werndl s success was at the expense of Sweden s Patrik Kittel who as always had the crowd right behind him when producing another one of his toe tapping performances with Deja but who just missed a place on the podium when having to settle for fourth E B Graves threw down something of a challenge at this evening s press conference I never practice my Freestyle as much as my other tests so I think now I have a bit of homework to do and I think there are many more points to be earned in the future she said so she is clearly marking Werth s card for the next time they meet Today however the lady taking centre stage was one of the great role models in the sport whose accomplishments are so many they may never be matched Werth is taking great satisfaction from her fourth FEI World Cup Dressage title not just because it s another success but because of the way she achieved it K F A 38 TCE ________________ TheCompetitiveEquestrian To have experience is an advantage if you use it in the right way and I think we did that from yesterday to today she said After a lot of years in the sport you know how many things can happen how things can change very quickly It gives you the confidence to go in the ring and to try your best you know what your horse can do and you know what you can do This was just a great day today said the happy German star May June 2018

Is it Equine Herpes Virus or Rhinopneumonitis By Dr Jack Root DVM Part one of two Equine Herpes Virus EHV infections have become an increasing concern to horse owners with a growing awareness of the potentially fatal neurologic form These infections are not new Herpes infections in horses have probably been around since before humans even domesticated horses It is even believed that the mutant form of EHV 1 that often causes neurologic disease known as Equine Herpes Myelopathy EHM has existed for quite a long time been a few rare cases where EHV 4 has been implicated in neurologic disease Other Herpes Viruses that may affect horses include EHV 2 also present in most horses which may cause inflammation of the cornea and mucous membranes of the eye and possibly inflammatory airway disease in young horses EHV 3 which causes a fairly benign genital blistering in breeding horses and EHV 5 which is responsible for a heaves like disease usually affecting middle aged horses For the purposes of this article we will focus on EHV 1 wild and mutant types and EHV 4 There are several strains of Equine Herpes Viruses that affect horses with the different strains causing different disease syndromes EHV 1 Wild Type is known to cause abortion respiratory disease and rarely neurological disease There is a strain of EHV 1 known as the Mutant or Neuropathic Strain that has a very minor variation of just a few of the DNA bases This mutation enables the virus to replicate more rapidly than does the wild type resulting in 10 to 100 times more Equine Veterinary Services viruses in the system A significant percentage of horses affected with 18715 NE Hwy 240 Newberg OR 97132 503 554 0227 Oakhurstequine com Facebook com oakhurstequine the neuropathic EHV 1 strain will develop neurologic disease with varying symptoms that may include Sports Medicine Layups mild incoordination hind limb Reproduction Semen Storage paralysis difficulty in urinating Private Events Diagnostic Imaging loss of tail function complete Seminars Surgery recumbency and even death EHV 4 which was formerly called Farrier Forums Medicine a subtype of EHV 1 is likely the Stallion Showings Emergencies most common cause of respiratory Farm Tours Preventative disease in horses and has historiHealthcare Rehabilitation cally along with EHV 1 been called Rhinopneumonitis There have Oakhurst Jack Root DVM Sylvia Ouellette DVM DABVP Flynn Magorian BVMS Tara O Brien VMD 48 TCE ________________ TheCompetitiveEquestrian May June 2018

There are a variety of readily available resources that provide thorough discussions of Herpes Viruses in horses So rather than to give you just another version of that I wanted to illustrate the highlights and common concerns regarding herpes viruses that we face in everyday practice in a story that is quite familiar to most equine veterinarians and many horse owners Pretty Meadows Horse Academy for just seven days The horse Blackberry an 11 year old mostly Dutch Warmblood gelding is discovered during morning feeding to have eaten very little food hay or grain since last evening Prior to that Blackberry seemed to be doing well in his new home Mrs Jefferson the stable manager immediately calls Ellie and advises her to please have a Owner Ellie May s newly acquired horse has been at the veterinarian come and check Blackberry over as soon as possible Durable dependable excellent value Ellie puts the halter on Blackberry and Dr Jack begins to examine the horse He first lifts Blackberry s upper lip and observes that the mucous membranes are pink moist and warm with a good rapid capillary refill Then aided by his stethoscope Dr Jack listens to the animal s heart lungs and abdomen All seems quite normal Moving to the rear end Dr Jack inserts his digital thermometer Trusted by riders for www shiresequestrian com 50 Within a few hours veterinarian Dr Jack arrives with Ellie anxiously awaiting him As they walked to Blackberry s stall Mrs Jefferson joins them Dr Jack tells both women that the most likely reasons for a horse being off feed is colic impending colic or a fever Initially while discussing Blackberry s known history with Ellie and Mrs Jefferson Dr Jack simply stands outside the stall for a few minutes just observing and saw that Blackberry did not appear to be in any colic type discomfort or other distress but was just standing in the back of the stall not reacting much to his visitors This Ellie tells Dr Jack isn t normal for Blackberry He is usually curious and happy to see visitors TCE ________________ TheCompetitiveEquestrian Dr Jack tells them So far so good All of Blackberry s vital signs are just as they should be His heart rate is 36 beats per minute I don t hear any abnormal lung noises May June 2018

and he has plenty of good gut sounds Also over there looks like a fresh pile of normal manure Suddenly the thermometer beeps and Dr Jack removes it to discover that Blackberry s temperature is 104 6 degrees Fahrenheit Wow he tells the women We now know why Blackberry is so off his feed He has a fairly high fever Most horses won t eat much with a fever of even just 102 degrees much less a fever well over 104 Dr Jack continues his discussion with an alarmed Ellie and Mrs Jefferson Blackberry probably has simply picked up a viral infection mostly likely a respiratory virus Blackberry might have a snotty nose and maybe a cough as well within the next few days A Nationwide Network of Dedicated Fitters Expert Craftsmanship Custom Leather Colors Stitching Accessories 10 day Free Trial Over 20 Saddle Designs 10 Unique Trees Innovative Hybrid Panel Options Simply the best dressage saddle on the market Steffen Peters Contact 800 235 3865 Stacy Berger Oregon 530 409 3199 Anja Swenson Washington Idaho 208 841 5730 Mrs Jefferson now concerned over her other boarders asks Do you www MySaddle com actually think Blackberry picked up a virus here or did he have it before he came here We haven t had any sickness here in quite some time so I think he came with it Also what could it be Sheepishly Ellie adds Blackberry was the only horse on the seller s premises when I bought him and the veterinarian that did his pre purchase exam emphasized that Blackberry was in great health Her only concern was that Blackberry hadn t been vaccinated for well over a year so I had her give Blackberry what she thought he needed Wouldn t that keep him from getting sick Not this soon It generally takes two or three weeks before most vaccines confer protective immunity Then looking mostly towards Mrs Jefferson Dr Jack responds It could be either or neither It could even be that the stress of his move and being in an unfamiliar environment made him more susceptible to an infection It might be that he did indeed pick up something on the way here or even from here that he doesn t yet have any immunity too It could be that a latent virus such as Rhinopneumonitis that is present in the system of most horses World wide came out of dormancy because of the moving and new routine stress Blackberry has just been through Our goals for now will be to try to determine what kind of infection Blackberry has and to keep him comfortable and get him back to good health as soon as possible May June 2018 Continued inTCE the next issue ________________ TheCompetitiveEquestrian Sporthorse Cruise Alaska Alaska June 23 30 2018 Sailing from Seattle on Holland America Line Sporthorse Seminars at SeaTM presented by veterinarians Dr Donna Stevens USA Dr Christian Schacht Germany Don t miss this unique social and educational event Call today for best fares 619 993 0636 SporthorseCruise com 51

G allagher Meller Sport Horses C reating a Legacy by Putting the Horse First By Caroline Nickolaus Phelps Media Group A Camillo VDL at Mei Lun Phelps Media Group s a co founder of Gallagher Meller Sport Horses alongside Michael Meller Katherine Gallagher has always had a special place in her heart for equestrian sport A unique business that focuses on putting the horses first Gallagher Meller Sport Horses specializes in sourcing and bringing along talented young horses up to the highest levels in the sport of show jumping The friendship and business partnership between Gallagher and Meller began ten years ago when they met through a mutual friend He came to my farm and stayed for lunch Gallagher explained I ran into Michael frequently Then our mutual friend Kate Nash Boone sadly passed away but Michael and I became closer The more time we spent together we realized that we had very common philosophies about horses We started talking and riding together One thing led to another and we started working together Earlier in her life Gallagher spent four years serving in the Air Force before working for the National Institute of Health in Maryland and later settled into the role of being a full time mother However what has never wavered is her affinity for horses which began when Gallagher was a young girl I ve been in love with horses since I was a young child but I didn t have the opportunity to ride because my parents just didn t have the means to help me with that said Gallagher When my daughter was older I was finally able to put my time and energy into horses I was free to do what I wanted and dove right into it 58 Shortly after immersing herself into equestrian sports Gallagher purchased her first horse after riding for one year I started competing within about two years of riding said Gallagher I took off in the National Show Horse world which is saddle seat For a while I also did competitive trail riding I would do 50 or 100 miles in Vermont and New Hampshire I loved that Striving to gain as much knowledge and experience as she could from a variety of disciplines Gallagher later became involved with a dressage sales business for about eight years Not long after however she found her true passion in the equestrian industry show jumping I started watching show jumping and found it was a lot more exciting said Gallagher In show jumping you know how you re doing all the time I really enjoyed it With a newfound passion for show jumping Gallagher Meller Sport Horses was created and established bases in North America and Europe with over 15 horses in training including Robin De Ponthual who competed at the 2016 World Cup Finals in Gothenburg Sweden with rider Peter Lutz representing the United States Perhaps one of the reasons why Gallagher Meller Sport Horses has been so successful is due to its founders philosophies which are rooted in the same core values putting the horse s well being above all else treating each animal as an individual TCE ________________ TheCompetitiveEquestrian May June 2018

and being patient as they develop through the ranks at their own pace The horse comes first It s always about the horse emphasized Gallagher That s our basic philosophy We are always concerned about each horses future and we pride ourselves in finding them the best possible partnership We always make sure that they have the means attitude and desire to do that We treat our horses as individuals continued Gallagher We train them show them and put a great deal of time and effort into them What happens to them is the most important thing to us It s not so much about the money but rather about what happens to the horse Gallagher admitted that running their business can be challenging at times but it is always rewarding However it can be difficult to stay involved with some of their horses when they are in training at their European base Although we visit them often sometimes it can be overwhelming remarked Gallagher It takes a lot of work to keep in touch with those horses that are in Dublin Sometimes it feels like you don t have your hands on them Both Michael and I like to be heavily involved in the horses development process and we like to be able to see them We also have another rider Michael Morrissey who campaigns our young horses continued Gallagher He currently rides two young horses named Flex Star and Godspeed who we bred in Ireland and are just starting to show this year Michael feels the same way we do He spends time worrying about the horses He doesn t push them or put them in classes that they don t belong in and he treats them fairly It s important to know your horse have realistic expectations and constantly be in touch with your rider We are looking forward to a long partnership with Michael Morrissey In addition to their string of world class bloodlines one of the most exciting and latest ventures involving Gallagher Meller Sport Horses is their North American breeding operation Born in spring 2016 Gallagher Meller Sport Horses welcomed their first two offsprings Q Arthur G M and Q Merlin G M That is absolutely the most fun The births of Merlin and Arthur were just magical said Gallagher One of my jumpers g a v e birth to Merlin and one of Michael s jumpers gave birth to Arthur From the very first day they had very different personalities Gallagher continued We have a new foaling barn at home We call it the maternity barn It s got great insulation and padding It s a whole hospital right there for the mares They are so much fun We just brought three horses back from Dublin to the United States at the beginning of the year and it is really a pleasure to have them around continued Gallagher You can t really know a horse if it s a continent away We can hear about them but we don t really know them until we groom them spend time with them and watch their behaviors in the barn Now approaching 2 years old the youngsters are starting to show great potential and promising futures as competitive show jumping mounts As they get older their personalities get bigger and they have more demands said Gallagher One time Arthur got out of his stall and he went out into the arena We caught him jumping the course Mei Lun barn aisle Phelps Media Group Gate detail at Mei Lun Phelps Media Group The spacious stalls at Mei Lun Phelps Media Group In the equestrian industry being an owner is often overlooked but owners are so critical for the success and growth of the sport Owners benefit the horses riders trainers and ultimately allow the sport to flourish Gallagher said It s a matter of keeping the relationships up and communicating with our riders on a daily basis With Peter Lutz we re fortunate enough to have a rider who has integrity and who takes the time to really understand our horses before taking them into the show ring It s very rare May June 2018 TCE ________________ TheCompetitiveEquestrian 59

ORGANIZE IT AND THEY WILL COME By Judy Wardrope SH Production s Scott Hayes built it and they both riders and spectators did come As Hayes says There s obviously a need with over 700 people attending People want to come and learn Certainly Ingrid Klimke acclaimed Reitmeister riding master in Germany and only the second woman to be so honored Olympic medalist plus European Champion in eventing and grand prix dressage competitor was the attraction for the two day clinic near Vancouver BC and she drew riders from Western Canada as well as Washington state Some clinic auditors came from further east and this scribe detoured to BC on her way from Arizona to Alberta Local Riders American riders were included on both days Saturday s dressage and Sunday s cavalletti work and eventing masterclasses On Saturday Garyn Heidemann of Cain Lake Stables rode Romance D Annika aka Ruthie a seven year old Swedish Warmblood mare in the fourthlevel portion where the relatively new partnership worked on making the turns and the circles round Ingrid coached Really turn in the serpentines and look further through the turns You must turn every stride so that the circle is round Alyssa Pitts rode Selestial R an eight yearold Oldenburg mare acquired from Red Wagon Farm in the developing grandprix portion at the end of dressage day Pitts comment afterwards was Super On Sunday Kat Southam a Canadian who recently relocated to Bellingham rode Sashay a 13 year old KWPN mare that was the 2017 Dressage Northwest Reserve Champion at Intermediare I as one of the demonstration horses for the Ingrid Klimke Cavalletti Method The use of cavalletti for both dressage and jumping is something Reiner Klimke also advocated according to his daughter and she stressed the importance of placing the cavalletti at the proper distance for each horse Ingrid promotes starting with one cavalletti and 66 is education You must be precise because this is the judge at C s first impression of you Haltandthe horse square on all four Ingrid Klimke organizer Scott legs with a quiet head like a statue Every Hayes of SH horse can Productions do this My father said this too Ingrid said and went on to relate the story of when she was riding a test and there was a buzz in the crowd when she was performing the first movements after the halt and salute She thought she had made an error and was riding the wrong test but then realized she had not heard the bell for being off course She continued on but glanced at the scoreboard where she saw the reason for the crowd s reaction three 10 s for her halt Ingrid Klimke and organizer Scott Hayes of SH Productions progressing to four on a straight line but never more than four With 4 if a horse gets into trouble it can get out without hurting itself or becoming too confused She recommends using the cavalletti on a straight line for warm up and for young horses and only progressing to cavalletti on the bend as the horse matures Sashay aka Shay proved to be a lovely demonstration horse showing good tempo rhythm and expression through the cavalletti In the eventing portion Michele PestlDimmit rode Floid a six year old Brandenburg gelding in training level and stated That was perfect just what we needed at this stage This is the fifteenth horse I have imported At the preliminary level Allison Welch who grew up in Alaska and then competed with the South Dakota State University s equestrian team before moving to Washington rode Joey a 12 year old OTTB that was born in British Columbia She was happy with their session and said that she bought him as a project but didn t know I was going to have him this long Points to Heed Train the halt Halt and breathe The horse must halt until cued to move This TCE ________________ TheCompetitiveEquestrian Consider what the conformation is like Is it easy for the horse Nature makes it easier for some horses and some have to work harder so take walk breaks Get off their backs Take a light seat especially with young horses and in the warm up for all horses On one hand we have to teach them to be obedient but on the other hand they should also be comfortable If the horse is acting up change do something different like a half halt and then a transition and do not punish the horse Walk trot transitions make the horse listen when he is spooky We have to be more interesting that what he is spooking at Over the years you want a happy and healthy horse to at least 16 years old With her own horses the work varies from day to day cavalletti one day lunging another day a gallop out another day etc but they all have one day off per week and they are turned out with other horses Ingrid s Preferences She prefers geldings to mares in dressage because with a mare you must make them think it is their idea If she does have a mare to ride she hopes it is not too much the alfa mare She added Stallions have their own thing sometimes too Conformation for the job is important in her selection of horses If they are not built May June 2018

Michele PestlDimmit aboard Floid Michele Pestl Dimmit aboard Floid for the job they have to work harder and you wonder if they are mentally tough enough to be a grand prix dressage horse For eventing she will not accept any horse that is not a good jumper I can work the dressage and collect points from classic training I want an economical canter for cross country and not too flashy gaits The horse must love to jump and feel like he can canter for ever I click with horse that have spirit and will not accept lazy horses I also make no compromise regarding soundness She loves to ride and train cross country but also loves the training for eventing and dressage I am impassioned by dressage right now That statement could have something to do with the fact that she is very excited about a dressage horse she thinks will be doing grand prix in two years When reminded that two years from now will be an Olympic year she just grinned Maybe it is possible that she will represent Germany in two disciplines eventing and dressage Impressions Given that she managed to affect an improvement in each horse without stressing any one of them it is little wonder that Ingrid s books and DVDs sold out over the weekend Romance D Annika Author Passionate about horses from an early age Judy Wardrope has studied the pedigrees and conformation of horses good and bad in varying disciplines for decades She regularly attends such prestigious competitions as the Olympics World Equestrian Games Breeders Cup etc where she has photographed some of the world s best horses She has written for numerous magazines internationally and authored several educational books which are available through her website www APRIL AD PLACED jwequine com Allison aboard registe Tsunam Allison Welch aboard Joey JC registererd as Tsunami Song ACCEPTING NEW FARRIER CLIENTS Over 10 years of experience including work with Dr Mark Revenaugh DVM Apprenticed with Joe McKee Dedicated to ongoing education References available 503 830 9580 Wilsonville Oregon May June 2018 TCE ________________ TheCompetitiveEquestrian 67

more about any future outbreaks and impacts on not only EI s larger recognized show but the larger showing community in our region Local vets are telling us that this virus has been around for a long time and most horses have been exposed by age 2 During times of stress this dormant virus can become reactivated For unknown reasons the incidence and severity of this decease have increased considerably during the last ten years Because of that the local horse community needs to start take bio security measures seriously to reduce the spread of the EHV 1 virus but also other highly contagious diseases Here are some of the suggestions we have received Designate equipment to specific horses Don t let the hose nozzle touch the water in the bucket Wash your hands before and after handling horses from other barns Discourage visitors from touching your horse Segregate show horses from non traveling horses at the home barn Isolate new boarders for a minimum of three weeks Take rectal temperature of horses twice daily during the show Isolate any horse with temperature over 101 5F and seek veterinary consult Join the EI Community www einw org With these common sense
