T here aren t many women who can pull off attending the glamorous Met Gala and a rough and ready Monster Jam monster truck event in the span of a few months but Georgina Bloomberg leads a remarkable life She s comfortable wearing haute couture at New York City society fundraisers but she also isn t afraid to get a t shirt dirty while holding animals at a Humane Society of the U S spay neuter clinic in Puerto Rico She s a top show jumper with a Pan American Games team bronze medal multiple Nations Cup appearances and a top 20 finish in the 2019 Longines FEI Jumping World Cup Final to her credit but she s also a single mother who bakes and decorates cupcakes for her son s school and coaches his soccer team There s a common theme that becomes obvious when Bloomberg discusses her passions in life whether it s motherhood riding or philanthropic work and it s that she doesn t know how to do something halfway Finding The Balance How Georgina Bloomberg Juggles Her Many Roles By Molly Sorge Jump Media Georgina Bloomberg Michael Bloomberg and Diana Taylor Photo by Getty Images The Number One Role The Met Gala is a setting with which Bloomberg 36 is familiar As the daughter of the former mayor of New York City Michael Bloomberg she s grown up in society settings and feels at home on a red carpet But when her son Jasper succumbed to the typical five year old boy fervor for all things trucks she found herself at Monster Jam in Tampa Fla in February and in unfamiliar territory I didn t know what to wear she said with a laugh Jeans and ear protection fit the bill and the mother son pair had a fantastic time posing with Gravedigger and watching monster trucks roar around It s what mothers do stepping out of their comfort zones to make their children happy and regardless of the many roles she plays in a given day Bloomberg is first and foremost a mother It s definitely the most wonderful thing she says of motherhood To be a mom was always my main goal in life There are a lot of things I d like to accomplish in the horse show world but being a mother has always been my top priority It s a clich to say but it definitely changes your world Bloomberg continued You don t get to be as selfish in your own emotions and your own disappointment If I have a bad day at the horse show I can feel sorry for myself for a few minutes but then I have to go home and put a smile on for my kid It helps you figure out what s important in life Georgina Bloomberg and Jasper Bloomberg and Jasper s father grand prix rider Ramiro Quintana are no longer together but they co parent amicably We re good friends and we do the best we can Bloomberg said He doesn t get to see him as often as I know he would like because he s busy at the shows but he s a wonderful dad to Jasper Photo courtesy of Georgina Bloomberg 6 TCE ________________ TheCompetitiveEquestrian July August 2019

Georgina and Jasper Bloomberg Photo by Geoffrey Tischman Bloomberg has a support system to help with Jasper but she s an extremely hands on mother Her favorite time of the day is when she takes Jasper to school which is about eight blocks from their New York City apartment We have scooters so we scoot to school together she said It s our time to spend time together before the madness of the day and we both love doing it We scoot to school then I try to go up to the farm in North Salem NY and ride as much as I can during the week then head back and be there to pick him up at school Banish the Guilt Now that he s five Jasper is also starting to take an interest in horses which gives Bloomberg an opportunity to combine two of the most important threads of her life On the weekends in North Salem Jasper rides a mini Teddy that Bloomberg adopted from Omega Horse Rescue I ve never really cared if Jasper rides and I certainly don t care if he shows she said But I do think that being at the barn and learning horsemanship and learning about animals is very important for every kid Thankfully he fell in love with Teddy and enjoys riding him Jasper is frequently ringside cheering when Bloomberg competes and she always blows him a kiss after her round but there are times when she s had to make tough decisions about prioritizing her riding career There are going to be times when I do have the right horses and need to go to a big horse show so I might say I m going to have to miss a few days of being with him or a play date or birthday party she said You just have to consider everything and then also not feel guilty Mom guilt is a real thing 8 It s a balance of figuring out how you can be there for your kid be there for the people and the horses in your barn and be there for other things that need your attention A lot of the time I will feel guilty about whatever decision I made but it s just about finding that balance she continued Courtney Stroum Meagher a former college classmate of Bloomberg s from New York University and good friend has seen her evolve as a mother She s so present with Jasper in a way that I think is really remarkable because she s also able to maintain her pre child existence Meagher said She does a wonderful job of balancing who she is as a mother with who she is as an individual She s fully devoted to her child and despite her constant travel as an equestrian and all the commitments she s juggling she also makes time and space to maintain her personal relationships Bloomberg is hoping that in the future she ll be factoring another child into that equation as well She s undergone two rounds of egg freezing in order to give herself options Having more kids is something I would like to do she said But right now I do want to place the importance on my riding career As a woman and an athlete it s difficult to decide Do you want to have kids or do you want to accomplish what you want to accomplish I would like to do both I ve decided Freezing her eggs allows Bloomberg to focus on competing since there are quite a few of the right horses in Bloomberg s barn at the moment But in the last few years she s had bad luck with horse injuries so she took a bit of a step back from the top levels of the sport Bloomberg took advantage of the less intense competition and training schedule to focus on time with Jasper and her volunteer work with charitable organizations TCE ________________ TheCompetitiveEquestrian July August 2019

At this point in my career I ve realized that there are many times when you don t have the right horse and you have to either keep going or you walk away from the sport she said You can t be completely reliant on always having an amazing horse to make you want to stay in the sport You have to stay in the sport because you love it I really had to sit and think Is this something that I want to keep going with I do love the sport I decided that I definitely wanted to stick with the riding but I also wasn t going to stress about the fact that I didn t have a grand prix horse for a year Making Time to Help Don t make the mistake of thinking that Bloomberg s riding and family life take up every moment though She still fits in quite a bit of work with various charities such as the Humane Society of the U S where she not only serves on the Board of Directors and is the chair of Humane Generation New York but also gets handson by participating in rescues from hoarding situations and spay neuter clinics in other countries Bloomberg also practices what she preaches with a menagerie of rescued animals including various dogs a pig a goat a rooster a mule and more living on her farm in North Salem NY Meagher works with Bloomberg at HSUS and has seen her dedication to the cause She really leads by example Meagher said She walks the walk When she puts her heart and mind into something she s all in She s the first one to raise her hand to offer help no matter what the ask is and she inspires everyone around her to do the same She s such an inspiring leader that people join in She doesn t expect any recognition for the things she does she s really doing it out of the most altruistic reasons from the kindness of her heart Bloomberg s conviction stems from her emotional investment It s so important to me that everything that I get involved with is something where I really care about what they re doing Bloomberg said My work with animals is incredibly important to me I do as much of it as I possibly can I really enjoy being more involved and hands on Bloomberg s level of support for various organizations varies from simply attending a fundraising event to a much more intense and committed involvement Sometimes you have to learn to say no Bloomberg said There are going to be times where I have to say even if I m in New York at that time I just can t do it I need to be home with Jasper that night or I need a night off Prioritizing that element of self care is something Bloomberg Georgina Bloomberg and Quibelle consciously does In addition to making space for time without Photo by Jump Media commitments she also schedules time each day for a work out It s Meagher notes that Bloomberg is one of the most out going people she s known her way of relaxing and having some of that me time that s so She s always inviting people into the fold she said She loves connecting with elusive for busy mothers Working out and staying fit is something people in any way She s so incredibly inclusive No matter who she s meeting that I place a lot of importance on she said It not only helps she s so warm hearted and open to keep myself strong but also keeps me calm mentally That s something that s just as much a commitment to me as anything else Four of Bloomberg s best friends have moved away from the New York area during the day and are scattered around the country so they plan an annual trip together Sometimes we make that a girls trip sometimes we include boyfriends or husbands but we always make travel together a real priority because it s the Fitting Friends In only time we can see each other and spend time with each other Bloomberg said There s one more piece of Bloomberg s puzzle a social life Just as she makes a point to allow time in her schedule for herself she also Bloomberg describes her balance of all the elements in her life as riding values time with friends I ve always placed a lot of importance on different waves When she has top horses that are healthy and jumping well making time for my friends and going out of my way to see them she shifts more importance to her competitive career When her riding slows and spend time with them because I m always busy she said down she has more time for family life and charity work It s obviously difficult Bloomberg continued Whether it s I think life goes through different phases for every rider she said Right now having friends or dating I try hard to expand beyond the horse the horses are all going well and I appreciate that I m trying to work as hard as show world which makes it difficult with all the travel to shows and I can and appreciate every moment with the good horses that I have because I having to compete on Saturdays and Sundays know how quickly that can all change 10 TCE ________________ TheCompetitiveEquestrian July August 2019

Open L4 Finals Co Champions Nathan Piper R on Patriot Jason Vanlandingham A Vintage Smoke L Photos by Alden Corrigan Media Piper Vanlandingham Tie for 2019 NRBC Open Championship When the curtain fell on the National Reining Breeders Classic Open Finals Saturday night two outstanding horse and rider teams stood as Co Champions It started with draw 25 Jason Vanlandingham and the 4 year old reigning National Reining Horse Association Futurity Champion A Vintage Smoke The talented duo marked a 227 5 which spectators knew would be tough to beat as only 11 horses were left to compete Then Nathan Piper on Patriot another 4 year old rode into the Coliseum Arena As the run progressed it was clear the score would be a big one and when another 227 5 was announced the chatter started What would they do After the final horse left the arena the announcer broke the news that for the first time in the NRBC s history there would be Open Level 4 Co Champions with each taking home 63 000 Nathan Piper Patriot Nathan Piper is an NRBC veteran but the Open Championship has proved elusive Patriot was the game changer I think I m still in shock Before I ran in I felt pretty good about it This horse is such a saint and is so good He comes out every day and does his job he said He gives me a lot of confidence because he s pretty predictable and he was getting better with every ride Pattern 10 provides a great opportunity to make a good first impression with the run in to a sliding stop When I ran in I felt him drop his neck and I knew he was in a good spot mentally He gave me it all Piper said Piper trains out of Toyon Ranch who bred and raised the young stallion by Smart Spook out of Dunit Lil Ruf They bought an embryo from Ann Salmon and decided to sell him before the Futurity I didn t want to lose him so I called Shannon and Hershel Reid and they agreed to buy him It was a blessing a gift from God because I knew he would go quick Piper said The young age of Patriot and A Vintage Smoke made the decision 14 to stay Co Champions an easy one They have had such a hard two weeks that I think it s good just to count your blessings Piper said Jason Vanlandingham A Vintage Smoke When Jason Vanlandingham and A Vintage Smoke won the NRHA Futurity Championship owner Diane Mesmer was already eyeing a Triple Crown win The NRBC was the one that kind of eluded me on Not Ruf At All until his very last year of eligibility With the group of horses we have against the group of trainers we have it s still not going to be easy to get that done but I m glad to have this one out of the way Vanlandingham said He added This is probably the toughest horse show we go to all year and for us to come in with a 4 year old and Nathan s horse is 4 year old as well and come out on top is a really big deal I m pretty fired up about how good our horses worked Vanlandingham said A Vintage Smoke is by A Sparkling Vintage out of Lady Smoke Peppy and Vanlandingham said he s a natural show horse He s a very strong stopper He came through the gate pretty hard and he swallowed the ground up on that first stop He turned as good as he can for me tonight He did the same at the Futurity The best he turned around all week was on Finals night like here he said Vanlandingham was standing by and watched Piper s run As soon as Nathan walked out I said We have something to talk about He said You re two thirds of the way to the Triple Crown and I d like to leave it and save my horse Vanlandingham recalled After a quick visit with Mesmer the decision was made Diane said if we could save the horses we would and we would both leave as champions he explained Mandy McCutcheon Wins 2019 NRBC Non Pro Championship on Party Nite The 2019 NRBC welcomed a large group of competitors vying for the coveted NRBC Non Pro Championship Those hopefuls were reduced to 73 finalists in five divisions with Mandy McCutcheon of Aubrey TCE ________________ TheCompetitiveEquestrian July August 2019

Texas and Party Nite walking away with the title during the Non Pro Finals competition McCutcheon has now won more NRBC Championships than anyone in the history of the event her wins total seven Still she was quick to point out that each one is special It never gets old Never I love it she said following the awards ceremony where she picked up a check for 30 000 McCutcheon and Party Nite were draw 21 in the field of 33 and marked a 219 5 My game plan was to have a nice smooth run She s a lot of horse and I m just now starting to figure out how to keep it all together she said The 4 year old mare is by Gunners Special Nite out of Topsail Survivor and was bred and raised by Sarah Willeman of Turnabout Farm Inc We bought her as a late 2 year old or early 3 year old We won the Best of the West Futurity but then we had nine penalty points in the preliminaries of the Futurity and you don t get very far doing that McCutcheon said Despite the bobble at the Futurity many people were trying to buy the mare and not for a small amount of money Tom said I hope you made the right decision because it seems like bad karma to turn down money like that but I just kept feeling like she had more in there Actually I still feel like she has more Today she was very good and showed very well but she keeps getting better all the time She added I just think time is what is going to do it for her Nathan Piper Patriot Jason Vanlandingham A Vintage Smoke Cade McCutcheon Wins First NRBC Open Title on Shes Got Good Guns It was Cade McCutcheon s first time to compete in the NRBC as an Open rider but he proved he was ready qualifying two horses to the Level 4 finals and winning the Level 2 on Shes Got Good Guns with a score of 221 The pair also finished second in the Level 3 finals and tied for ninth in the Level 4 It went as good as I could have imagined McCutcheon said following the awards ceremony All together McCutcheon s earnings on Shes Got Good Guns for the Open Levels 2 4 totaled 35 198 The NRBC was only the second show for McCutcheon and Shes Got Good Guns a 6 year old mare by Colonels Smoking Gun out of A Bueno Poco Dunit She was trained by Duane Latimer who made the Futurity finals with her the mare was then shown by Todd Bergen at the NRBC where she also made the finals She s been good for everyone and she just keeps getting better Tonight I knew she wouldn t do anything wrong so I let her stay a little more fresh and it worked McCutcheon said It s early in McCutcheon s Open career which makes the opportunity to show Shes Got Good Guns even more special Roxanne Koepsell has been a client of ours for as long as I can remember She s been awesome I m really happy she trusted me with this horse Not a lot of people would have trusted me with a horse as good as she is this early in my career but she did and I m grateful McCutcheon said McCutcheon noted that Shes Got Good Guns would get some much needed rest before the NRHA Derby Open Classic L4 Co Champions Nathan Piper L on Patriot Jason Vanlandingham A Vintage Smoke R Mandy McCutcheon Party Nite Mandy McCutcheon Party Nite

L R Shane Sweetnam Shanette Cohen McLain Ward and Lucy Davis following last year s 300 000 Hampton Classic Grand Prix Presented by Douglas Elliman Lenny Stucker Mostly I inherited a lot of great people although I brought in some great ones as well most notably my husband Bryan who oversees our vendors and special projects I made some changes that I thought were necessary but not very many I try to empower people to do their jobs I m here if they need me but I m definitely not a micro manager I think that s part of why we re so successful People really thrive in their jobs and I try to let them thrive as much as possible Cohen reports to a 14 member Board of Directors and works closely with the Classic s Equestrian Advisory Committee Another thing I love about the Classic is that we have such engaged Board members and Advisory Committee members Nothing makes me happier than when we re at an Advisory meeting and a rider or trainer brings up an idea and says We should do this or We should do that I love when they use the word we It shows how much they are personally invested in the success of the Hampton Classic I love that they re comfortable offering frank feedback and suggestions because I know it s because they care and it s coming from a real interest in helping to make us the best show we can be Balancing Tradition with Modern Progression viable so last September immediately following the Classic the show s Board of Directors approved a 1 million renovation of the Classic s famed grass Grand Prix field along with a simultaneous capital campaign to fund it The Board was quick and nimble in making decisions We researched options and then made a final decision to stick with grass rather than changing to all weather footing said Cohen I m thrilled that we were able to keep grass If we had gone with all weather there s not a whole lot of year round maintenance that s needed so that would have made things simpler but the grass field is one of the things that make us special and it s really the best surface for horses to be jumping on That s what s natural for them good grass There s nothing better Visions for the Future When asked about her vision for the future of the Classic which is currently a Four Star FEI event Cohen remarked The goal is always to make the show better every year I would love for us to be a Five Star at some point but for now we re committed to being the best Four Star we can be Feedback from the Equestrian Advisory Committee and other competitors and participants helps the Board decide how best to improve the show In recent years the Classic has made capital improvements such as new perimeter drainage around the Grand Prix field a new well and a new irrigation system Biggest of all was a decision last year which has enabled the show to make a significant improvement while maintaining a historic feature of the show I want us to continue to grow and be important within the industry but I also don t want to lose our feel of community Certainly our most important role is being a world class horse show for competitors but it s really so much more than that So many people who never go to any other horse show come to the Hampton Classic each year For them it s like going to the Indy 500 or Kentucky Derby Being at the Hampton Classic is an experience and people love being part of it what a spectacular introduction to the sport for so many Natural grass fields have become rare in the world of show jumping and the Classic s 2 5 acre green field is a major attraction Difficult weather in 2018 took its toll on all the sporting fields in the Northeast including the Classic s A band aid approach was not The Hampton Classic was always my favorite show long before I worked here reflected Cohen who no longer competes herself although she still enjoys riding recreationally This is a dream job for me and I love it I can t imagine working anywhere else 28 TCE ________________ TheCompetitiveEquestrian July August 2019
