Deeridge Farms Much more than meets the eye yet so much that does meet the eye By Simona Diale T he Palm Beach Masters Series presented by Suncast closed its fourth year of competition at the Deeridge Farms in Wellington Florida Kicking off with the penultimate East Coast qualifier for the Longines FEI Jumping World Cup Final this year the Series expanded with the only qualifier on U S soil for the Longines FEI Jumping Nations Cup Final the CSIO5 Longines FEI Jumping Nations Cup USA The picturesque 300 acre venue unrivaled hospitality and world class facilities once again gave the world s finest horses and athletes the opportunity to showcase their talent and their team spirit Behind the beautiful facility is a family that has given back to the sport enormously in these past decades the Jacobs This year the PBM Series is a 501 c3 nonprofit organization with all proceeds benefitting the United States Equestrian Team USET Foundation For the love of the family horses and sport Jerry and Peggy Jacobs purchased their first Florida properties in 1979 Of their six children three are heavily involved in equestrian sport Lou Charlie and Katie They grew up at Deeridge Farms and now four generations of the family are involved in the industry Alongside Charlie and Katie Lou Jacobs founded the Palm Beach Masters Series and though many a change has taken place over the years it s all about family horses and sport Lou Jacobs Kathy Russell Photography Charlie Jacobs Kathy Russell Photography 18 TCE ________________ TheCompetitiveEquestrian March April 2019

My father rode horses as a boy He set about raising his family and focusing on his career but his passion and love for the horses was never lost In the late 70s we all took up riding and my father built our farm in Buffalo New York As a family that s what we would do ride and show as a family and this really brought us together said Lou Jacobs as his eyes light up Since the winters up north are tough our Dad started coming down to Florida and at the time Gene Mische ran the events in Jacksonville Tampa and Palm Beach As Palm Beach kept growing our father decided to buy Deeridge Farms which at the time was all oranges and grapefruit groves Mom loved this place and Lou and Katie Jacobs Kathy Russell Photography offered in the sport During the World Cup week someone they started by building the barn the pool and the house Little asked me what moments were the most compelling he by little it became what it is today and most of all our family place explained There were two equally gratifying moments The to congregate first was having 120 horse and rider combinations on the wait list in the sand arena the second was walking the course with We competed as a family for decades dad was doing the Amateur the 68 riders competing in the qualifier The number of riders Hunters and my brother sister and I started competing I went was huge and 21 went clear that tells me that people brought from a rider to being a parent alongside our daughter who was an their best horses and they performed brilliantly Not to mention active competitor That is when I saw the opportunity on making that the top five included three riders that at the moment are Deeridge host to the Series as we see them today Historically in the top 10 world ranking Winning here is not only hard but the World Cup and Nations Cup were in Ocala and I thought this really special area could be a great opportunity the horse community is here and we needed to figure out an event where the didn t have to Bringing pride to the host was the team representing the United move Four years ago we applied to host the World Cup qualifier States in the Nations Cup We re bringing our A Team here my daughter had been showing a lot with Rodrigo Pessoa so I which tells me again that this is not just another Nations Cup had been going to quite a few Jan Topps Global Champions Tour Lou said The team is treating this as their home event and they events where it was typically winter footing on one side and grass want to defend their home ground their Nations Cup They are on the other Since I thought that there was a role in this country the best horse and rider combinations in the country and this for something like that this was the format I wanted to follow tells me that we have accomplished what we wanted to do which is to be part of something that they take great pride in According to Lou Jacobs running a horse show is quite different from being a competitor but having been a rider a parent and As an organizer of such an event held in a location that brings a horse owner he believes he learned from his past experiences back a myriad of childhood memories he is quick to give credit in other roles and there s a time in life when you have different to his team for the success achieved I m proud of what we ve perspectives and as he said he is delighted to play this role accomplished and what I am most proud of is the team we ve Thus the vision to produce an event more sponsorship based with put together The group around this show is the best in the the concept of a boutique event limiting the number of horses business has gone above and beyond all expectations and I showing Today our limit is at 350 and it truly does work Because know that we can do better in the future we ve been doing this for a few years now we ve established credibility he said adding that thanks to the credibility earned In closing Lou once again underlines how important family is the PBM was granted the Nations Cup bid a goal that he had set and how these noble animals can have such an amazing role in along the way One of my proudest moments was that of being bringing family members together My father is 79 years old part of a winning Nations Cup Team in Aachen in 1985 I think the and he is here with my mother and my sister watching the event combination of riding on a team and representing your country is that has brought us back to doing things that we have in the so compelling they are two very unique experiences and because past Horses bring families together My brother Charlie my there is only one qualifier for Barcelona in the States it s a great daughter my sister and my niece are still competing Today my honor to host it professional responsibilities have changed but I love being a part of this You don t undertake this if you don t love the sport The level of competition during the event is undeniable making and you don t love these animals It starts and ends there the PBM one of the most prestigious and exhilarating series March April 2019 TCE ________________ TheCompetitiveEquestrian 19

The Broken Road that Led NICOLE LAKIN to By Emily Riden Jump Media Photos By Jump Media A s Nicole Lakin sits at the Winter Equestrian Festival WEF in a pair of stylish sunglasses and a comfortable sweatshirt branded with her company s logo she happily answers questions about launching her own software and the role of technology in the horse industry It s obvious that her enthusiasm for the topics is seemingly matched only by her passion for the horses themselves which makes sense Lakin 31 is the founder of BarnManager a cloud based application designed to simplify horse and barn management and a lifelong rider herself However while horses and technology may be at the forefront of Lakin s life now it wasn t always that way In fact the current Wellington FL and New York NY resident never would have envisioned that she would end up working in the tech space it was only through a series of unexpected events opportunities and ideas that Lakin found herself where she is today Opportunities Disguised as Adversity Lakin was born into a non equestrian family but it wasn t long before she discovered horses The middle of three siblings Lakin began riding at the age of seven joining her older sisters who also rode and first competing in the hunter divisions local to her Reading PA childhood home As a junior Lakin transitioned to the jumpers and equitation under the tutelage of Stacia Madden and Max Amaya at Beacon Hill and Stonehenge Stables in Colts Neck NJ There Lakin went on to win team gold and individual silver medals at the 2006 North American Junior and Young Rider Championships and to compete everywhere from under the lights at WEF to on the grass in the renowned International Ring at Spruce Meadows in Calgary AB She got Alaska a big grey horse that had belonged to Cayce Harrison said Amaya recounting Lakin s early years riding with him at Stonehenge With that horse she started doing incredible things like going to Calgary and jumping the grand prix and 1 50m and things she only dreamed of This horse Alaska allowed her get there As Alaska was helping Lakin to accomplish many of her biggest riding goals he was also perhaps playing an even more important role helping to save Lakin s life Lakin was competing at the 2006 WEF when she fell off Alaska and hit the ground hard She was immediately taken to the hospital for chest x rays that would reveal broken ribs but also something worse and far less expected stage 3 Hodgkin Lymphoma a cancer of the lymphatic system Hodgkins is a relatively slow growing cancer which is incredibly lucky Lakin explained But on the other hand I was already at stage three of four It s very likely if I had not fallen off that day and gone to the hospital it could have gone unnoticed Following an initial surgery Nicole spent four months undergoing intense chemotherapy all while insisting that she continue to be around the horses I always admired her take on what would be for many people a devastating situation said Amaya She always took it with grace and she never stopped doing what she loved which was riding and even planning how to pursue her dreams Nicole Lakin and Wannabe

Page 31

Nicole Lakin She was very tough continued Amaya These are my words not hers but I think Alaska helped her get through the healing He was her big rock her big pillar to help her keep going and believing She was coming to the barn even when she was quite sick Lakin said Instead of getting frustrated because it wasn t really within my control at that point I threw myself at taking care of my horses back at the barn and spending as much time with them as possible I spent a lot of time with the vets learning as much as I could By the time her Hodgkin Lymphoma went into remission Lakin s time spent with the horses led her to take on a working student role with Amaya and to get more involved in the management side of the barn opportunities that would eventually guide the course of her future career An Entrepreneurial Upbringing In addition to growing up riding there was another element of Lakin s upbringing that would eventually play a vital role in where she is today her family s entrepreneurial background My dad was third generation in a family retail company working his way from selling on the floor to eventually running it said Lakin whose great grandfather started the well known department store Boscov s with just a shoe cart in downtown Reading PA I always thought that was the normal thing You get an idea and you figure out how to make your idea happen It always made sense to me that if you created something you could turn it into a business continued Lakin I never thought to myself Oh I ll be in the tech world I just thought of an idea and it seemed normal to me to make that idea into a business It s a little crazy now if you think about it my idea happened to involve technology so I accidentally realized my love for technology and product development Nicole Lakin and Capitain de Flobecq with Max Amaya March April 2019 TCE ________________ TheCompetitiveEquestrian 29

Page 32

Nicole Lakin and Capitain de Flobecq A Solution to a Problem The idea that would ultimately steer Lakin down the road she is on today all came about thanks to her management role at Stonehenge I would be back at the barn trying to make grain and have a question for Max who was down at the International Ring basically a mile away Getting in touch with him was challenging said Lakin of a summer she spent managing 15 horses at Spruce Meadows I was always looking for ways to get around those communication issues and to get even more organized That s when the New York University graduate had the first thoughts of what would soon become BarnManager as she began dabbling in Excel and Word trying to make tools that would improve organization and communication problems I was very lucky that I d made some amazing friends that had been managing horses and complex organizations far longer than I had said Lakin I sat them all down and went around the table and asked what the most annoying thing was that they were constantly having trouble with I said If I built something to make those things better would you guys use it The answer was a resounding yes so Lakin set out to design software that could provide a barn management solution only Lakin had no background in software development 30 I had never written code I had no idea what went into developing software Nothing said Lakin who nevertheless returned home to New York from Wellington with determination to bring her idea to fruition I went on LinkedIn and Facebook and found everybody who had any technology background that would sit down with me for coffee and tell me what to do I drew out a million maps and did a bunch of sessions with design groups where I poured out everything that I knew about horse management By 2012 BarnManager had launched providing users with a tool that offered horse data and health recording messaging calendar sharing scheduling a virtual white board that takes the conventional barn white board and makes it accessible anywhere customizable tables free form lists and much more I think launching it was definitely one of the more exciting experiences of my life said Lakin who devoted more than a year to research mapping out features drawing design concepts and conceptualizing branding After all of the work it was just really rewarding to actually see people using it As BarnManager began to gain popularity and users Lakin went back to school earning a graduate degree in entrepreneurship from Babson College s F W Olin Graduate School of Business in Massachusetts TCE ________________ TheCompetitiveEquestrian March April 2019

Nicole Lakin and Capitain de Flobecq Nicole s a very hard worker with a quiet admirable determination said Amaya who continues to train Lakin today as she competes largely in the 1 30 1 40m jumpers She s very optimistic and has a wonderful energy It s those characteristics that led Lakin to take on another project idea in 2018 the Equine Technology Collaboration I had gotten so accustomed to having this great collaborative inspiring group of people around me all the time while I was at Babson said Lakin I missed that but also when I first started BarnManager there really weren t many other people in the space By the time I came out of Babson there were all these apps popping up and people really paying attention to them There were a lot of us now trying to do the same thing encourage others to use technology to improve the lives and well being of themselves and their horses continued Lakin Lakin recognized the opportunity for many of these companies to come together to share the same message support one another better serve the equestrian industry as a whole and ultimately to create greater inter operability between the various applications Today that mission is shared by members of the Equine Tech March April 2019 Collab BarnManager Equo Electronic Vet Epona Exchange Etalon Diagnostics Event Clinics JumpFax and Stableguard Just by building the relationships with each other talking about the ways that we can connect what we re doing it s eventually going to lead to us integrating and thinking about how we re building new things for the betterment of the industry said Lakin The collaboration really supports that kind of forward thinking and the kind of work that I want to be a part of in the future If the road she s taken so far is any indication there s no telling where Lakin s path will lead going forward But it s likely her future will be full of great accomplishment from Lakin and the two things Lakin is so enthusiastic about bettering lives through technology and of course the horses With your own company you have the opportunity to make an experience for people that is one that you would want to have yourself said Lakin It s sort of cheesy but every time you touch someone you have the ability to either leave them better than you found them or worse We can make people feel a little bit cheerier when they leave us And through technology like BarnManager we can get people away from paperwork and back with what really makes them happy and why they and I are doing this in the first place the horses TCE ________________ TheCompetitiveEquestrian 31

8 Myths of Saddle Fitting Methods and yes I m warning you these are controversial By Jochen Schleese CMS CSE CSFT 2019 Saddlefit 4 Life All Rights Reserved I have often heard riders say I have been using my saddle for x number of years It fits me perfectly and fits every horse I use Never had to get it fitted I have to really bite my tongue on that one but usually just manage to smile and say Lucky you Perhaps they do not realize the possible damage they may be doing to themselves and their horses but the fact is that there are still saddles on the market that actually inhibit the development of the horse and as such they may actually be right Their saddles may still fit the same as it did when they first bought it But the analogy here is sort of like the Chinese custom of binding the feet so that they will not grow Doesn t mean it s the right thing to do tradition aside There are several major problems arising in today s modern saddle construction because of the fact that a People are getting heavier larger b There are more horse owners than horse men and women around now which means much of the inherent knowledge about horse husbandry may have been lost c Horse s saddle support area is getting smaller d Panels are generally much too soft to afford any real support Panels need to be firm for support All of these work together to result in more and more back issues for both horse and rider Let me explain my theory on this and please recognize that my opinion on this has been substantiated with the use of various diagnostic tools as well as being supported by the simple fact that the horse will change in conformation as it matures especially at ages 3 5 and 8 Insert growth pics here 3 5 8It would be doing the animal a huge disservice not to have the saddle adjusted to ensure continued health comfort and performance which is why we recommend at least annual checkups for saddle fit Joyce Harman in her book The Horse s Pain Free Back and Saddle Fit Book actually states at one point that depending on the discipline saddle model and riding style that adjustments may need to be made as often as monthly once a year is pretty much the minimum requirement for most saddles Colonel Alois Podhajky the director of the Spanish Riding School in Vienna from 1939 1964 states IT is of the utmost importance not to cause the rider any discomfort With a cramped posture it is impossible to achieve a pliable seat Without a pliable seat it is not possible to achieve oscillation in a horse s back And if its back cannot oscillate the horse will suffer pain and will not be able to collect The point The saddle has to fit the rider as well as the horse Which means among other things the saddle has to be gender appropriate rarely does need to be adjusted because bone structure and ligaments do not adapt and change their conformation through training like muscles do and the muscles really won t change much because the horse simply is not able to use his muscles properly with a saddle that fits like this It doesn t change because it can t Fit 2 The Bridge Fit This is another type of fit that follows along with theory 1 saddles are built for contact only at the front and the back of the saddle support area and fitters believe that by increasing the pressure at the front and the back the saddle becomes more stable and the horse will bring up his back during movement to result in full panel contact This is a false assumption as multiple diagnostic tools have proven Massive pressure in the front and back remains dry spots white hair etc result Little fitting required since the saddle barely moves and the horse doesn t change Fit 3 The Hyperextension Fit These saddles are purposely built to allow the hollow back look which is popular with saddle seat big lick and Tennessee Walker enthusiasts They literally prevent the horse s back from engaging by disallowing the wave of motion through the horse s back They prevent spinal mobility and don t allow the horse to canter The saddles have extremely narrow gullets to not allow the back to come up Or is anyone going to argue that this is a natural type of gait for a horse Fit 4 The Treeless Fit Bareback Pad While admittedly there have been some radical improvements in treeless saddles over the past couple of years there are still many issues with them I know they have their advocates and they may work for a while but in the long run they will still result in concentrated pressure points on the horse s back mainly below the seat bones on the spine and ligaments and this has been documented in scientific press The rider s weight is effectively doubled on the horse s back as there is no support for the rider s pelvis Fit 5 The Specialty Fit These saddles use a combination of various fit methodologies to work and are saddles which of course require different fit considerations given their specialized uses While the general premise of how a saddle should fit given the requirements of both human and equine anatomy doesn t change I wouldn t presume to say I m an expert in this particular area Fit 1 The Clothespin Fit This type of fit is often seen in polo saddles where the saddle actually is designed to lock onto the spinal processes Polo ponies often have atrophied back muscles and usually 6 8 are used in a game because they simply are in too much pain and not strong enough to continue Some saddle manufacturers and their trained saddle fitters still maintain that a saddle is fine with a relatively 1 2 fingers narrow channel The tree is long and flat resting on the shoulder and lumbar area and sits with minimal weight bearing surface on the musculature In this scenario the saddle barely moves because it is sitting on the spine other than perhaps to twist during motion as it is kicked back by the bigger shoulder This saddle actually 58 Speciality Side Saddle TCE ________________ TheCompetitiveEquestrian March April 2019

C Fit 6 The Modern Sport Fit sometimes a combination of Fits 1 2 and 3 This is where the premise of fitting a saddle according to fad sometimes overtakes the more common sense logic of function I remember when I first came over to Canada from Germany and saw my first show jumping competition Most of the riders were using extremely small flat saddles that I later learned were called close contact in direct opposition to the bigger bulkier jumping saddles I had been used to in Germany What I couldn t understand was the fact that almost without exception there was keyhole pad upon rubber pad upon felt pad under the saddle basically negating the concept of close contact But everyone was doing it because the elite was riding this way Unfortunately this is part of the concept that one size fits all Saddles are bought because top riders endorse a particular product for whatever reason and not necessarily because they are right for the individual or actually fit either horse or rider That s what I mean by fad These saddles are often placed too far forward on the shoulder because they may be too long for a certain horse and rest on the cartilage and ligaments with little or no weight being carried by the muscles as it should be The paradox is that capillary ischemia is proven to be caused by as little as 4 67 kPa kilopascals of pressure many of these saddles have readings deemed acceptable of far beyond 11 kPa again documented in the literature not just because I say so H M E B K F Fit 7 The Fake Adjustable Fit Saddles which are DIY with interchangeable gullet plates can give the impression of being adjustable at any time to accommodate changes in the horse s conformation unfortunately these gullet plates only change angles and not width The tree as well may suffer in its integrity in conjunction with constantly changing gullet plates and adjustments are confined to only a handful of predetermined angles Fit 8 The Tree Lift Fit This type of fit specifically accommodates the anatomy of both the horse and rider to ensure optimum comfort and protection against long term pain and possible back damage The tree has rear facing tree points to ensure that if properly placed behind the shoulder there will be no cartilage damage The gullet channel is wide enough to not impact spinal processes and the rider s weight is properly distributed within the saddle support area of the horse s back The saddle support area is on the weight bearing longissimus dorsi long back muscle The advantage to having the saddle on the saddle support area muscle is to stay away from the reflex points that create negative behavior or negative conformation and health issues Staying off the spine lumbar area and shoulder keeps the back muscles loose and supple Your horse can then articulate through the SI joint and March April 2019 A use his haunches better by stretching his gluteus maximus and hamstring The most efficient way to train is to maximize both flexion contraction and extension stretching and in order to achieve this full range of motion is required By reducing the pressure on the shoulder your horse will be able to lift the base of his neck and become supple through the poll If the horse has been in ill fitting saddles in the past that have caused some back pain don t be discouraged if your horse shows signs of muscle soreness after switching to a saddle which has been fitted properly as this is good muscle soreness It will help him heal get stronger and develop correctly TCE ________________ TheCompetitiveEquestrian Historically saddles were made for function and not fashion Source Christoph Rieser used with permission 59

a very engaging speaker and it was lovely to have her join our eventing family for our celebration We hope she will visit us again in the future On a sad note as most of you have heard by now we recently lost a person who was very special to many of us in Area VII and who although intensely private was also extremely generous supportive and cared deeply about our sport Dee Strand was a very special person with a huge heart as well as endless kindness and generosity She will be greatly missed I d like to extend a very special and heart felt thank you to Greg Tryon who joined us to share some of his memories and thoughts about Dee her contributions to our sport and her impact on the Tryon family Greg s presence and words meant a lot to us especially those of us who were fortunate enough to have known Dee So the day was filled with education socializing celebrating each other s successes from 2018 and remembering special horses and people who have meant and will always mean so much to us Congratulations to our 2018 year end award winners and the best of luck to everyone for a successful 2019 season Other important topics for the new year Safe Sport If you haven t yet educated yourself on the new requirements of Safe Sport now is the time This new legislation affects every one of us in some way In a nutshell The USEF Safe Sport Policy and U S Center for SafeSport Code are aimed at protecting all participants in our sport The required training is about recognizing reducing and responding to misconduct and abuse in sport Effective January 1 2019 all USEF members 18 and over with an Adult Competing Membership must complete Safe Sport training in order to be eligible to participate in USEF activities including competitions As an adult 18 and over USEA Member competing at the Preliminary Level or above this affects you But it also affects trainers coaches judges owners and since the intent is to protect our youth I encourage parents to educate themselves on this very important issue There is extensive information March 2019 on this subject as well as links to other resources available on the USEF website at www usef org Please educate yourself on this now because the training is required to be completed prior to competing Coordinator Barb Jensen Hello USEA Area VII Young Riders and parents As the new Young Rider Coordinator for USEA Area VII my goals are to provide educational opportunities for every level of rider to improve their horsemanship on and off the horse encourage them to give back to their sport by volunteering and help them develop lasting relationships with their peers and mentors By providing a fun and educational atmosphere I hope to help develop our youth into being the next generation of leaders in our sport For more information about our program visit our website at https www areavii org young rider home Amateur Status Another subject many of us as adult riders need to make sure we understand going into the new competition year is the answer to the question What is an Amateur and what do I have to do or perhaps more accurately NOT do to hold an Amateur Card This goes under the subject of know the rules For the definition of Amateur Status please refer to the U S Equestrian Federation Rules for Eventing Appendix 3 1 3 Amateur A Amateur v Professional is not as clear cut as one would think so if you are an adult and competing as an Amateur please educate yourself so you don t run afoul of the rules Here s to a great 2019 year Let s go Area VII Thank you for your support Barb Jensen The Area VII
