2019 NRHA European Futurity Cremona Italy April 1 6 By Simona Diale Mirko Midili SG Icetopman Bonaga Communication
Mirko Midili SG Icetopman Bonaga Communication Mirko Midili and SG Icetopman Top the Open Futurity When in 2007 NRHA Hall of Famer Eleuterio Arcese of Italy dreamed of having an NRHA Futurity in Europe open to 4 year old horses never would he have imagined that not only his dream would come true it would also become one of Europe s most prestigious events backed by an amazingly successful NRHA Nomination Program the stallion Capello trusted me to show him here and words cannot express how important it is for me to have been able to show off his incredible athletic ability here and put this title next to his name I know he has a lot more to give and I truly hope that his owner will give me the opportunity to show him in the years to come 2019 marked the eleventh edition of the Euro Futurity and after being held in Kreuth Germany for eight years Cremona took over the reins three years ago Over 300 horses made their way to the Italian city home of renowned violinist Stradivari where a total of over 246 000 added money was offered in the event Europe s best horses and riders gave their utmost and once the curtain fell on the CremonaFiere stage Mirko Midili and SG Icetopman owned by Matteo Capello had conquered the NRHA European Open Futurity crown Earning reserve honors with a 219 5 was NRHA Million Dollar Rider Cira Baeck riding NF Shining Whiz a mare owned by David Perneel and Kim Windey My mare did so well for me tonight and I am very proud of her said Baeck She was simply amazing and showed off her athletic ability and her willingness to give all she has I m a little sad that we couldn t slide to the highest step of the podium but it s all about horse showing When the last horse and rider left the show arena on Saturday night the duo s 220 5 score was enough to take home the European Level 4 Open Futurity Championship For the Italian NRHA Professional the win was special for more than one reason With SG Icetopman s sire SG Frozen Sailor between the reins he won the first major event title of his career the Italian Reining Horse Association Open Futurity I won my first major event the Italian Open Reining Futurity on SG Frozen Sailor in 2013 when I was 23 that horse will always hold a very special place in my heart He was sold to Silver Spurs Equine shortly afterward and since then I have always looked out for one of his foals When I set my eyes on Icetopman he was a yearling and I really wanted one of my customers to buy him Last year Capello purchased him and I had the opportunity to show him at the Italian Futurity where things did not go too well for us in the finals said Midili about Cira Baeck NF Shining Whiz L4 Open Reserve Champion Bonaga Communication
Taking home the L3 Open Championship with a 219 was Grischa Ludwig riding Gunnanicya MM JB for owner Alexandra Schmitz For the German professional the win was three times as sweet not only did he show his mount s dam and grand dam the latter at the age of 30 is still being shown in walk trot competitions by Sylvia Maile s the breeder of his champion daughter I am thrilled with this win said Ludwig I have shown in every edition of the European Futurity but have only won one title here The L2 Open Championship with Whizoom in 2009 We all want to bring this title home and making it on this horse that is so special to me is amazing He has matured a lot in these past few months and during this show he was really easy to prepare Clinching the Level 2 Open Futurity with a 215 5 score was Giovanni Masi De Vargas riding Bugs At Nite owned by Mariangela Di Pierro When I first saw this horse in Oklahoma City at the NRHA Markel Yearling Sale I knew he would be a good one said Masi about the stallion I broke and trained him myself and from day one I felt he could and would be a champion and here we are Owned and ridden by Daniela Saupe Smart N Surprising closed his run with a 215 5 and the L1 Open Championship Bred by Nuith Linthorst who won the NRHA European Derby on her horse s dam Just Miss Enterprise the stallion was shown last year by Daniela s husband Michael at the Italian Futurity where the duo earned the L1 Open Co Reserve Championship and before that by her at the NRHA of Germany Breeders Futurity We love this stallion s breeding and decided to purchase him as a yearling said Daniela He is a great horse that both of us love showing and winning here was hoped for but considering the level of competition unexpected We don t know whether my husband or I will be showing him at the next event but we sure know we both would like to ride him The Open Futurity counted the highest number of horses entered 123 and once again was a huge success Grischa Ludwig Gunnanicya MM JB L3 Open Champion Bonaga Communication Giovanni Masi De Vargas Bugs At Nite L2 Open Champion Bonaga Communication 50 Daniela Saupe Smart N Surprising L1 Open Champion Bonaga Communication TCE ________________ TheCompetitiveEquestrian May June 2019

WESTERN STATES JOINT MEET 2019 Hosted by the Red Rock Hounds Reno NV What a week of hunting camaraderie and good times Four hunt clubs came together with hounds staff and membership Meet hosts Red Rock Hounds were joined by Santa Ynez Valley Hounds California Big Sky Hounds Montana and Woodbrook Hunt Club Washington MFH Lynn Lloyd Huntsman Angela Murray and their Red Rock Hounds are known for exceptional hospitality and they did not disappoint The entire event was very well organized by Liz Kelly RRH Honorary Secretary and Amy Lessinger RRH staff who sent daily emails with fixture updates organized meals and hunt breakfasts shuttles to events and even the RRH Ball Wednesday April 3rd Woodbrook hunted This was Woodbrook s first time bringing hounds to a joint meet in over ten years and it was possibly the first time ever drag lines had been layed and hunted at a Pacific District Joint Meet Woodbook is the only drag hunt in the western united states As the Huntsman it was a bit unnerving to present our sport to an audience of coyote hunting experts and enthusiasts in unfamiliar country Because of the 682 miles we had to travel to participate I was only able to bring our Jt MFH Tami Masters Kennel Huntsman and whipper in Sarah Glaser dragsman Eric Stiemert Papa Fox and whipper in and draglayer Aubrey Roth RRH where kind enough to provide field masters and guides who knew the country for our staff Six couple of crossbred hounds did their best and showed the field the fun and challenges of drag hunting The Ross Creek Ranch fixture included green pastures sage brush covered hillsides ponds creeks and beautiful rock formations RRH s professional whipper in Raina Robrahn seemed to get a genuine thrill when she helped to lay the second drag line in country she knows well Hounds were diligent and keen all day It seems we captured the attention of this coyote hunting group Santa Ynez Valley Hounds hunted the Hungry Valley fixture on Thursday Their hounds primarily of French decent Grand Gascon Saintongeois and Blanc Noir form a very tight pack and have beautiful deep voices that they pleasantly share with followers On Friday we followed MFH Rene Mantle and her Big Sky Hounds with a few Red Rock hounds thrown in for good measure BSH are from Montana which has 80 The Woodbrook team representing at Red Rock s hunt ball Photo by Nancy Stevens Brown Waldo had a hard winter to say the least This was the first time Rene s hounds had been able to hunt in over three months That evening RRH hosted their annual hunt ball The denim and diamonds theme was perfect for Reno s western vibe Fox just before crossing Red Rock Road Galloping behind hounds through unknown country was quite exhilarating for me I was closely followed by Tony Leahy MFHA President WHC Jt MFH Tami Masters and WHC President Kate Gormally While the field enjoyed a check and libations from the Whoopee Wagon Aubrey Roth moved ahead and laid our next line We gave her a fifteen minute head start before hounds and field moved off again Hounds had the tough job of picking up scent in a sage brush covered field of cow dung They did so in easy fashion and we were off again this time following a creek bed further up the valley toward Porcupine Hill We had a great gallop across a lush green Hounds found Aubrey easily and were quite proud of themselves Feeling like we wanted more Angela Murray RRH MFH and Huntsman climbed up to find a track The going proved tricky Aubrey ran into fences without coops and Angela On Saturday Woodbrook had the opportunity to hunt a second time I guess found a brace of coyote probably intrigued by our activity We decided to stick to our this group of hound loving live hunters original plan and hacked back to the west enjoyed drag hunting enough to follow side of Red Rock Road Further to the north again We moved off from the Rancho Haven Community Center at noon Papa Papa fox had been playing along the base of the Peterson mountain range Hounds drew Fox had been thinking out his line for and found then they followed at a steady days and wanted plenty of lead time so speed until they were briefly challenged A he left a solid hour before the hounds grassy lane led us back into the valley and The wind was blowing and I was unsure once hounds hit the line again we were off of how scent would travel or dissipate in the conditions Our hounds are amazing and running Papa Fox ended the final line into of a perfectly formed wood pile similar They were challenged but they worked together to find the line they climbed the to the ones in our hunt country on JBLM pinnacles and tried down again I helped After a celebratory check we hacked a short them as best I could but mostly just tried way back to the trailers to stay out of their way They lost the line Sunday April 7th was the final day of the briefly and considering how far ahead meet It was also closing hunt for the Red Eric was I asked hounds to cast down into Rock Hounds We missed the day as it was time for us to start the long trek home By the valley and out of the sage The green all reports I ve heard it was a fabulous day belt was exactly that lush and full water of sport from the Hungry Valley fixture Hounds ran into a few challenges but complete with the famous and everlasting eventually ran hard and found Papa Red Rock camaraderie Woodbrook hounds
